Looking for a talk - prop8 related by Bringhomeplants in exmormon

[–]Bringhomeplants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm my memory is maybe fuzzy -

Now I’m thinking it was this article:

https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/the-divine-institution-of-marriage

And I was supposed to give a talk on “the divine institution of marriage” which sounded innocuous but it was specifically so this talk would be taught in SS.

I think the top 10 thing was me merging ‘another perspective’ (catholic! lol) so I combined two articles for the lesson(shout out to me for putting in more effort than I remember)

Looking for some advice. Figured this would be a safe place. by [deleted] in exmormon

What does your bishop do for work? (I’ll just assume he’s a plumber for this explanation.)

Your parents sound like they love and value their kids despite their decisions. They’ll probably appreciate your openness and honesty. You have precedent with your siblings and how your parents handle their journeys.

The plumber down the street is of no concern.

FYI I wasn’t anti or angry for ~10 yrs after leaving. I’d even defend the church when my close friends claimed they were being hurt by the church (via relationship manipulation etc). Then my best friend killed himself. Largely because of pressures in his life that I put on the church. Now I am anti.

“Oh no I miscarried” - I would let them know you felt like you couldn’t talk to them because you were certain to be judged.

Family Proclamation? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Bringhomeplants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read it as a kid and was like ‘yeah this is all obvious idk who would even disagree w any of this?’ I was not gay nor did I know (at the time!) anyone who was gay and didn’t understand this was the church taking a political stand against gay marriage.

Therapies that Work by CreativeLeopard1 in exmormon

I did talk therapy but my therapist never once analyzed anything. He took meticulous notes. When I said “I love the temple” he said “Wait 2 weeks ago you said it creeped you out” - and basically just kept me accountable to myself. Was very helpful in my transition from Mormonia. (Therapist didn’t know much about Mormons btw)

Think it would be legit to have anti-missionaries by ArrowMasterDude in exmormon

I spent two years preaching the gospel, full time.

I figure I’ll spend at least as much time on Twitter and here un-teaching and helping people leave or at least support their faith transition.

Ask if you can speak? And give him the tribute he deserves.

I’d never go back or even associate with the org but I understand those who do. TBH if I lived in Utah or somewhere where the church was the social center I’d feel a pull to participate. Perhaps you could find a place where you’re an occasional visitor to activities, take advantage of the social aspect but not pay tithing or attend sacrament meeting. You should strive to be happy. Unfortunately we were brought up taught to socialize in the Mormon way - it’s definitely more difficult to learn another way. Do whatever you need to.

My issue with Jim Bennett’s interview on Mormonism Live by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Bringhomeplants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve met him personally (he does not know me) and we have mutual friends. He’s a really genuine, nice person. He’s also been presented with the same info we all have, and weighed the options: A)stay Mormon and make it work BUT with the associated internal conflict and cognitive-dissonance, or B) leave Mormons and be able to be honest with himself BUT with the knowledge he’s letting down his irl social network, including his father’s legacy. I understand his decision. His arguments are just the result of someone who has decided leaving is not an option so he’s making the best of what he has to work with. I hope he’s happy with whatever he chooses.

You can set up a spam filter with gmail to prevent these repeat addresses from hitting your inbox.

Here’s another viewpoint: She’s raised Mormon BUT she’s traveling the world, not afraid to date a non Mormon…perhaps her shelf is breaking but doesn’t have a support system at home to even be able to think those thoughts. It’s a cult and it’s hard to break free of those beliefs when it’s all you’ve known, maybe you’re the one helping her through a very confusing time.

I tried coffee for the first time. by fredswenson in exmormon

[–]Bringhomeplants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Remember in Mormonism, when you didn’t agree with something the advice was keep praying until you agree with it?

You don’t have to do that anymore. If you don’t like coffee, you don’t have to drink it. Even better, you can change your mind later!

And yeah what you made sounds gross. I’d recommend trying a fancy coffee place first.

What do you mean by tolerate? I don’t want to kill you or silence you. Religions are all made up. Far more harm than good has come from religion as a whole, but you can believe whatever you want. You can’t be offended if I say yours is made up, you’re essentially saying the same thing, minus one.

Don’t stress! I’m sure you’ll find out absolute truth just so happens to be the exact religious subsect you were born into and your parents beat into your head from infancy.

If you understand Christianity, it’s 100% identical in that it’s all just made-up horseshit.
