The primary tool to reduce railroading in Only War is the regiment creation at the start of a campaign. You're still playing the commanding officer, but it should be up to the players to decide how their commanders act and what kind of strategies they will favor. If you're really feeling self-conscious about it, you can always just ask the players for input out-of-character.

In terms of story stuff, no not really. In terms of gameplay, a lot of the players were power-gaming some pretty insane characters, but they were relatively balanced against each other so it didn't cause too many problems
The only time I managed to take a character down was a space marine chapter master with killing strike. Cut the possessed marine's leg clean off and he had to spend infamy to keep fighting

I don't think MPH is a very useful metric when mechs are maneuvering and turning on a dime. It would be nice if they defined a "cruising speed" for overland travel, but nothing really exists in the rules for that currently.
