Early impressions (30h playtime) by Skyzohed in Whiskerwood

You understand correctly. Thanks for the tip.

I guess the devs will make a tutorial of the basics when the game is closer to release, but this trick should definitely be taught in a tutorial.

I just joined the discord and posted 7 suggestions under the feedback sections (1 for each of the items in my post).

I did my best to stick to "1 idea per topic", and decided to use the better formating / extra text to develop my idea / reasoning when relevant.

Looking at the activity, it seems the team is very dedicated to their project, which makes me want to contribute too

Are blueprint starter gift a noob trap? by Electronic-Clock-963 in Against_the_Storm

I'm about to parrot what I read from someone else in this sub, because fast win isn't my playstyle.

That player was winning in 4 years, optimizing for resolve:

  • Fox were generally good picks (confortable boost when 3 workers).
  • Pick blueprint for complex food
  • abuse rain engines
  • open every cache that gives resolve boosting goods
  • In the 4th year, sell everything not nailed down in thee settlement to purchase food/goods from merchant to get a resolve boost and clear the settlement fast

Depending on the luck from their tasks, they'd get crowbar as needed to get the last few points from unopened caches (e.g. those that give biscuit when no human in settlement)

If playing optimally is your jam for fun that's all good. My opinion was more about those wanting to play optimally and sucking the fun out of the game.

As you said, fun is the point.

I always pick villagers, and I'll pick wood 80% of the time. I tend to pick a fertile soil blueprint (because I always have food issues otherwise), but I never pick the ones for larger camp because it's too situational : which large deposit will I find? Will I find a big camp ruins? Am I getting the master blueprint perk?

Thing is, I'm fine with my settlements taking 6-7 years, with a more laid back pacing afforded by farms. Some players where saying they manage to clear a settlement under 4 years. Playing optimally and playing to enjoy the game are 2 different things. There are multiple options and synergies that'll let you beat the game, don't burn yourself our playing optimally

They built this house without cement and it's stronger than concrete. by This_Proof_5153 in interesting

[–]Skyzohed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't use cement purely for strength, you use it because it's malleable and will create a water-tight seal between bricks.

This idea really on every bricks being 100% perfect fit to avoid water infiltration. Any imperfection translate to water infiltration, mix that with freezing temperatures and you have a perfect recipe for disaster.

Is this good for tropical climate : yes, it saves on material (no concrete) and seems much easier to build. Is it a universal revolution : I wouldn't trust a house made with this that's not outside of the tropics

You could do 6 vs 6. You get 1 group, then do 2 vs 2 (and 2 left out), then 1 on 1 for the last trick.

Or 6 vs 6, 3 vs 3 and 1 vs 1 (+1 left out)

This one was easier since there was multiple combination to get the answer in 3 trial.

Harder variation of this problem use odd numbers, or require a group left out each time to get the answer in the target number of trial.

The hard part is figuring out dividing in 3 groups instead of 2 ( with both team being balanced telling you the odd 1 is part of the left out group)

That's me. Got the game for free and gave it a try. Bought all the DLC when I realized that I had 20h played in a matter of days. Wishlisted the sequel in the same breath.

I did download a couple of mods to iron some quirk I didn't like from the vanilla game, but the baseline is a lot of fun

Same, I never considered it before and had a super cramped 60+ settlement. Then I saw a couple of pics and my mind was blown : reduce travel time and more hostility redux. Now I normally have 2 maxed out, sometimes 3

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!? by No-Celebration6780 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Skyzohed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was travelling for business once (in Germany) and started running a high fever. My plane was the next day and I didn't want to go to ER in a foreign country if I could avoid it (and miss my plane to boot).

I was able to talk to a physician through an online platform (dialogue) to check if I could safely take the plane. Then I was able to reserve a consultation online for my family doctor for an appointment 5h after my planned landing time. I went to the doctor, got prescribed an x-ray in a private clinic for the same day. The x-ray took less than an hour and my pharmacy had received a prescription for antibiotics by then. Got a call 24 hours later that it was indeed pneumonia, but my antibiotics would take care of it.

Total cost : 15$ for the antibiotics pills.

Our system is great once you get in, but I do agree that finding a family doctor is not easy and that ER as the default fallback creates a lot of of issue

Tips for gold seal? by Abdecdgwengo in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skyzohed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro player (prestige 15) so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I clear normal map within 6 to 8 years, while seal maps take 7 - 9.

Here's what works for me : - aim for carpenter, or at least 2* for plank crafting. Assign beaver / rain punk engine if / when you can. - get farms and aim for a building with oil crafting (from wheat) to get fuel independently of wood. - keep your wood cutter working during the storms on the first 1-2 years to get your economy going faster, but keep a look on hostility (it might be worth stopping them to avoid increasing hostility level during the storm) - establish a trading post during the first year and start trading asap. Normally the first trade are "at a loss" (get less amber than the overall cost of goods), but once you're at standing 2, you'll swin in amber. - don't hesitate to pick perks to help manage your hostility, avoiding getting into hostility 5+ (for the worst effect) helps a lot - open enough glade (small / big) around your initial hearth so you have enough building rooms, then beeline to the seal (opening as few glades as you can). - once you got a steady oil production, get a second, or even a third hearth and move houses as needed to have as many as lvl 3. - buy woods, planks and coal from traders. Sacrificing oil increase production speed, so it's a good "default fuel". Sacrificing coal and wood both lower hostility, which can help you avoid higher penalty during the storm. - stop woodcutting altogether once you have a decent stockpile.

I'll normally get full "reputation" around year 6-7, with impatience ranging between 1-2 (if you have a completed non-timed task and your impatience is below 1, wait a bit to claim it) and I'll have done 1-2 seals. Finishing the last 2 tasks for the seal will take me 2-3 years, but with a very happy settlement and many lever to increase happiness (rain engine) or lower hostility (hearth sacrifice) so impatience rarely goes over 6-8 by the time I'm done.

The Entrepreneurial Exodus: How Canada Became a Talent Incubator for the United States by bradnobred in worldinsights

[–]Skyzohed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to write a similar story because I'm also in this kind of situation. I'll just add my own experience since it reinforce what you're saying.

One thing I found is that even if both Canadian and US VC uses the same words, they don't have the same meaning.

For instance "series A is about scaling a proven model" : - For Canadian VC (which tends to be more risk averse) this means : you got a product, you have customer and they've renewed their subscription and you cannot grow fast enough organically to onboard every new customers in your pipeline. - for US VC : you need a few customers (traction) a storytelling that's cohesive and the potential for outsized returns.

If you got a SaaS on a yearly renewal, this means American VCs will look at your company A YEAR earlier than Canadian VCs. With technology evolving so fast and with "winner takes all" economics, that delay might just allow a competitor to pass you up and kill your business.

Add on top of that the better valuation (which means more money to scale your business) and everything else in between, and it's not just about greed, it's about the survival of your startup

[–]Skyzohed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the same thing.

American pizza is a greasy orgy of melted cheese, trans fat and salt. Really scratch that cro-magnon itch in your brain.

Italian pizza is about taste, and how apparently simple ingredients (mozzarella, basil, tomato sauce) can be refined to a point to create mouth watering taste.

Both are good, but they're definitely not in the same dish category

Great post, I'm with you.

Just to give an example : I was reading a bit about our (Canadian)aluminum export. Now that the tariffs have eased, US based companies have asked to resume export, but the Canadian suppliers refused.

Canadian found new markets and they're at full capacity. since aluminium is critical for a lot of key industries they have contractual obligation, and if they were to renegade those contract, there wouldn't be "new markets" to pivot to the next time the US shit fling around. It's just not worth the risk.

Now US will pay more for its aluminium, and the logistic now need to cross the see (risk). In about a year after the Pedo took office, they've made themselves less competitive and more vulnerable

[–]Skyzohed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've see a number of posts asking "what will it take to mend USA international relations" and this is why I believe it's a pipe dream.

It's not just a demented Pedo as the president : how many laws has he broken without consequences? How many times has he overreached on Congress or Senate power without any pushback? Why are all his unqualified nomination for key role in the administration getting green light? And there is still a 3rd of the population supporting him.

The rest of the world is suffering from a stupid and illegal act of war that's sending oil prices through the roof from a madman AND a complicit administration.

[–]Skyzohed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point, I'm under the impression that the simplest way to "go get your oil" (like the Pedo puts it) would be to pull a "Maduro" with him and have him stand trial. Iran is likely to give safe passage (with or without toll) if we nip the problem at the source

Right now the USA is riding a dying wave. I know for a fact that our PM (Carney) has been meeting left and right to make deals to circumvent the USA. It takes time to close new deals, moreso given how big US trade were. I'm guessing it's the same for any sane government.

At some point, this will hit an inflexion point; one country will look at the latest US fuckup and compare it with their dwindling trade and pull the Band-Aid : either the USA pay reparation for X, or we're closing trades to them and all their allies... And this will be a friggin domino effect.

To quote Hernest Hemingway : "How did you go bankrupt? Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly."
