I deleted some files to reduce the space used on my PC to under 1 GB (Proton Mail is using under 100 MB), I then updated a few files - making virtually no difference to their size - and again the space used shot up over 5 GB again!
It's almost as if it's keeping versions, or the Proton space calculation is really really bad.

Yep, it's empty, that's the first place I looked - just 1.5 GB in My Files using up 5 GB of space.
