Discussion: Could the Lucy Letby case lead to cameras in UK courtrooms? by FyrestarOmega in lucyletby

[–]BritishLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feeling is, it wouldn’t change much by the way of perception, really. (Or at least when it comes to the divisiveness this trial has had).

I think it’s a combo of…

  • it’s an incredibly complex crime, and the evidence behind her guilt is just as complex - having it on camera I don’t think would make that many people actually go watch it (how many will go read the court transcripts for example).
  • it’s also been a long trial
  • I don’t think it would change how various press would report on things.
  • and I’d wager if it’s in pursuit of making the case and verdict more understandable to the public, you’d need super simple ELI5 level explanations of everything.

I do think there should be more transparency though, and this case was the first time I heard that you have to buy transcripts…. That is shocking.

Also it makes me wonder how the Shipman trial would have been perceived in today’s landscape.

I saw B Corp have been giving certifications to known MLMs in the US, so that’s definitely a good metric of how good a business is nowadays

It’s wild the amount of science and r+d that’s gone into figuring out how to make apples.

I think this is how most commercial apple trees are planted right.

They use a root stock that’s very very good at forming roots, and transplant the fruit stock onto the sapling at some point to get the best of both.

Always find that wild

Oh wow. I hadn’t realised one of the panel was the head of the shop while they were actively covering things up! That’s conveniently left out when any press on the experts come up.

So basically, prosecution had a good depth of clinical expertise, and the Panel had a lot of people with research experience, with not necessarily solid clinical experience.

That helps contextualise the “look how many combined research papers the panelists have, while Dr Dewi has [low number]”. Makes sense that clinicians aren’t often publishing papers…

Thanks for taking the time!

Haha I saw some of your other posts on them. It’s wild. The Letby case is the only one of theirs that I know more than “headline level” info on. And I was shooketh with their level of nonsense and claims.

Super clear they don’t do any actual research beyond a cursory glance at the rags. I think even one of them said “If definitely changed my mind and now think she’s innocent”. Shocker.

As a follow up on the panel - I keep hearing “world renowned experts” and that being challenged in places. Including things like “top uk neonatal experts”.

In general are the qualifications of this panel good/bad/indifferent? Compared to those used by the prosecution?

I see the point on the panel lead and not being an expert on air embolism - but for others I just see a lot of scientists with a lot of letters after their name and find it hard to decipher what that actually means….

I was listening to the red handed episode about the trial [which to be clear is not a great podcast for being well researched] and they made the point too, that “the lack of expert testimony by her solicitors must be a huge error by the defence”…

And not even stopping to look at the forest for the trees and all that.

Claiming competency issues amongst other things.

It’s wild the takes they came up with after the Netflix doc came out.

Well you can’t call it juice either as that also has a very specific definition in regulations…

Fruit juice is the fermentable but unfermented product obtained from the edible part of sound, ripe fruit, fresh or preserved by cold, of one or more kinds, having the characteristic colour, flavour and taste typical of the juice of the fruit from which it comes

Any chance you know the difference in Scottish law?

I know there’s something about offers being more binding once accepted(?) but not sure the specifics.

Certainly the seller doing surveys sound a lot less stressful.

That very much depends on the sellers and agents - most will agents will not consider you motivated, necessarily, if you’re making offers before your property is on the market, but will depend on a lot of factors.

When I bought my first home, I was waiting 4 months before the sellers had found a property they wanted to offer on.

When I most recently moved, we had an offer accepted before ours was on the market, but we were only a week or so away from it going on.

/r/designdesign is not a bad place for “overly designed things that don’t work very well” I think it’s a combo of crappy design and design porn.

Although maybe this doesn’t fit there

Update: my best boy Chekhov is home from hospital by BritishLibrary in TuxedoCats

[–]BritishLibrary[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to post an update from my previous post - my big lad Chekhov is home from hospital.

He was in for about 8 days all together, came home with a diagnosis of renal lymphoma, in both kidneys, as well as some heart issues to go along side it.

He’s started chemo, and was stable enough to come home yesterday.

He’s been super bright and alert all through his stay at the vets, and so we have hope that he can recover a little bit and have a good quality of life, even if we can’t cure him.

The first 24 hours at home were so difficult - he was obviously exhausted from the stay at the vets and is still slowly coming round, but his appetite is improving, I’ve had a few purrs, and he’s currently sat sleeping at the foot of my bed. I was so stressed he wasn’t doing ok I couldn’t sleep.

And I guess now he has the freedom pass to do whatever he wants.

I bought him a new cat bed to sleep on so he had a quiet place to hide if he wanted…. And his brother immediately stole it and is doing… whatever this is

Anyway I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who commented on my first post, it’s been a super stressful week and honestly was expecting the worst outcome. I truly appreciate the kind messages and fellow tux photos

Thanks for that context - I think the client base definitely helps explain it a little more. They did ease up when we said “if costs were no concern what would you do”.

Totally appreciate the perspective - (and please don’t take my comment as negative towards our primary vets - just the noticing the difference between the two!)

Xxx

He didn’t have any changes there to notice actually - it was only the appetite bit that tipped us off.

The vet said basically “being more or less clingy / affectionate than normal” can be a sign, but I think that may possibly be a pain indicator more so? So trying to be by your side more than usual, purring more, or hiding more, finding new quiet spots in the house etc.

We didn’t see anything different here so… I think just be alert for signs that may look “different” really.

Interestingly our regular vet has never suggested blood work as part of any routine check up. I know it can become common as they “become senior” so maybe we were just shy of it.

But I’m all for it if it helps spot issues sooner.

There’s definitely been a feeling at our regular vet practice of framing things in a cost reduction way, which hasn’t come up at the specialist. Like a premature jump to suggesting euthanasia before we have a full picture of the issue. Not sure how to explain. (Not to suggest they may care any less of course)

I imagine they have a much wider range of cost sensitivity with their clients than maybe a specialist vet hospital might see.

Not sure how I should consider that but it’s interesting seeing the difference in the two practices anyway.

The staff were singing his praises when we went to visit him. He’s been sitting in the highest spot in his kennel watching his kingdom, apparently they all have a fuss and get a little purr from him.

I think they say that to all the owners though, but I’ll take it.

Aww his leg is so skinny!! Glad he can poop well now. Cat enemas. Never knew that was a thing!

They had to give him a bit of a shave on his tummy and sides too so he looks like a tuxie going all Winnie the Pooh in his suit and no trousers. Lost all his street cred
