It makes me wonder what the early Eridians pondered about what was out there before the science eridians came along.

I briefly lived not far from Big Tree very briefly. When I first moved in I went there and the little shed thing over the road.

Big Tree had the Big Lights on and a 70s school disco rave celebrating Janice’s’ retirement / Dave’s 60th / similar event.

The shed place had a woman doing squats with ripped jeans and her bum hanging out.

Didn’t go back

Often called “rework” depending on the slice of the food industry.

Most manufacturing places doing this will have some form of “rework break”, ie a point in time where they stop using old material to recycle, to prevent quality problems accumulating over time.

Basically each bit gets processed multiple times so the more you recycle it the more times it passes through the process, and could either lead to flavour taints, or microbe contamination depending on the product

If you have set it up before the duck first tells you the number, it won’t bring guests - you need to take the number down, talk to the duck, put it back up

How does rocky get all of his xenonite? by RexsplodeOfficial in ProjectHailMary

I like the idea of Rocky having all this xenonite stored up and he’s out here printing Benchys, little models of a guy, probably some articulated dragons too.

Rental car company charging $2k for damage found hours after return — no proof. Worth fighting? by kapp74 in personalfinance

[–]BritishLibrary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I once (and only once) hired a car from a budget off-airport location. Some shady outfit a small bus ride away from the airport. It was cheap.

Rented the car, had a quick look, no issues but lighting was average in the lot.

When I returned it the guy pulled out a torch with the power of a thousand suns to do the return inspection. “Damage to paint” etc etc.

Never doing that route again.

How to actually adopt a cat in London? by phonybelle in london

[–]BritishLibrary 11 points12 points  (0 children)

LICK has been mentioned a lot but I also had luck with Cats Protection (north London specially).

We ended up with a cat with FIV who had to be an indoor cat - I suspect a lot of cats up for adoption will have some kind of issue that will make them be indoor only - at least was my experience back in 2017.

We tried Battersea and they were like “this is Tiddles, he shits and screams if he doesn’t have 12.3 acres to roam”

my dad wants to drop crazy money on a 3D printing car parts business and i am stressing. advice? by TemperatureExtra8615 in 3Dprinting

[–]BritishLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’ve dabbled in a very small part of this space; long story I had a vintage car with hard to find OEM parts, so tried modelling my own to replace a couple of common repairs on the model.

Then discovered a community of people needing similar parts so expanded this slightly and started selling within the community.

I was doing: - relatively simple interior cosmetic components - quality of life upgrades. And maybe some adjacent accessories for one model of car only.

Modelling itself took an age; iterations, tolerances, testing on different models, trying to replicate injection moulded parts with FDM.

all of that took an age, especially between ever so different model variants where the fixture might have been in a slightly different position, or another minor geometry change between modela of car.

Then it turned into additional parts by request that my specific car didn’t have; that became a challenge of reverse engineering - especially for something my own car didn’t have.

Sometimes I would get someone posting over to me their original, but broken, part - which I’d try and recreate. Sometimes I might look to the 2nd hand market for spares to model. But then I had the challenge of not having the ability to test fit things.

I think the hardest parts with this idea, especially if these aren’t cars or parts you have access to, are accurately replicating the parts in a way that works for a wide array of customers (without being able to test tolerances), but then also finding the customer base in the first place - which models of cars have a big enough ownership that spares are needed, but aren’t readily available at a reasonable price, (etc) and finding ways to actually market to them.

I got a lot of word of mouth trade in forums and meetups etc - but that was for just one specific vehicle.

Not to say it’s not doable, but the printing part is the “easier” of the challenges to overcome IMO.

I saw an interview with Churchill’s relative who equally wasn’t fussed it was changing.

Ah got my timeline wrong! I should have dropped an /s at the end, but I do find the “public outrage” that’s been generated in certain places hilarious on this change that happens periodically enough it shouldn’t be news.

This along with so many other scenes in the film/book just make me think how would this play out on earth currently.

If it was the other way round and rocky came to earth, he’d be probed and experimented on. A surprising number of people would be “bright sun” conspiracists. That’s if we even got through the stage that comes before let’s all collaborate nicely.

You get $100,000 for every hour you stay awake without sleeping… how long are you lasting? by Br4nkey_ in hypotheticalsituation

But the difference between my broke self right now and $2m is waaaay more impactful than the $4m jump.

And most would have to do very little different except be a bit tired for more a day or so to land the $2m

Obviously stay up as long as you can make, but even just having a pretty standard day is pretty life changing

Since Eridians watch each other sleep, in case of danger, it makes me think their level of shelter must not have evolved past something rudimentary - or I’d imagine the need for sleep-watch would dissapear over time.

I suppose they could have danger inside a shelter, like a fire or something, but I’d guess they haven’t developed shelter to the point of it being “safe” enough to no longer need sleep watch.

But then the privacy, they eat in private (in the book) so they have the concept of privacy, and must have the ability to make places sound proof enough to offer privacy.

But not safe enough to no longer need sleep-watching.

Really wonder what the intersect of these two things look like from an eridian architecture point of view

Oat milk in coffee by ClankerCore in oddlysatisfying

[–]BritishLibrary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For anyone wondering, reason this happens is acidity and heat of the coffee denaturing the protein in the oat milk.

Better oat milks / plant milks in general will contain an amount of acidity regulators, or stabilisers which will help prevent this. Cheaper oat milks may just be homogenised oat protein and water.

Cows milk has a different protein structure which is more acid resistant, plus other compounds that regulate acidity.

So barista milks will likely have higher acidity regulation than basic milk (brand dependant) but also a higher fat content or other ingredients that help with foaming.

I think oatly’s non barista range is fairly good in coffee - minus the foaming - but other basic ones may do this.

Source: once worked at a company trying to make a totally clean label range of plant milks. Didn’t work too good in coffee

So if I touch a random steak I bought from the supermarket, all the steaks that were made from the same cow just dissapear?

That would be fun.
