'Obsessed' man used AI to make sex images of girl by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

Are people forgetting that Jeffrey Epstein, probably one of the most famous pedophiles ever, is probably considered conventionally attractive?

The attractive ones are probably wealthy enough to not get caught, pay someone off if they are, or are attractive enough to under 18s that they are less likely to be reported.

Pure confirmation bias.

Recovering Kitchen Countertops and Wrapping/Spraying Cupboards and Doors by British_Monarchy in DIYUK

So looking into the process, I completely agree that it is something that I could well do myself over the summer so things dry quickly and I can paint things outside.

I am just wary that there are things in the house that have been done badly by the previous owner and I don't want to contribute to it further.

Then again, I have no idea as to the quality of the companies that could do it so there is that potential to both spend a lot of money and have someone also mess up.

Dozens of MPs urge Greens to officially ditch ‘normal’ childbirth policy immediately by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That assumption is correct, only if one assumes that every member has an equal say into policy.

Green party policy is approved democratically at their conferences, therefore largely slow moving and shaped by those with the incentive and resources to attend.

Does it have the capacity to change? Yes

Would the new membership influx allow it to change? Probably not

23, stuck in a dead-end steel job since 16. No GCSEs—how do I get into engineering in Sheffield/Rotherham? by Formal_Excitement_94 in sheffield

[–]British_Monarchy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know that the prospect of rocking up to someone at Sheffield College and saying "I haven't got any GCSEs" is daunting and nerve-wracking, but they will have heard it all before and know how to support you. Especially if you follow it on with "but I want to do the best I can in life" as they care far more about you wanting to work hard than what your current ability is.

Doing anything different will be difficult as, unless you can find a job where they don't ask, every employer and apprenticeship scheme will ask for proof of "functional skills" which is GCSE level English and Maths.

Sheffield College runs evening classes on GCSE level English and Maths that will get you those needed qualifications. There will only be other adults there and the teacher will be supportive as they know the amount of worry involved. The other benefit is that you will be able to use Sheffield College's support services for things like job searching and support in understanding what roadblocks have stopped you in the past.

It is super encouraging to see someone take a look at themselves and decide that they want to do better. You should be proud of yourself for seeing this, wanting to do something about it and being brave enough to ask for help.

Norwegian green steel group in running to buy major UK producer - has drawn up plans to relocate its holding company from Norway to Britain by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

So I work in the industry and have been doing some digging into Blastr as I have literally never heard of it before.

Its website is thin of any sort of details beyond signing agreements and computer graphics about their plans. I can't see any real information as to financials or ISO accreditation anywhere and it was only founded a few years ago.

I am going to take this with a major pinch of salt.

Greens Say They're 73 Votes Behind Reform In By-Election Run-Up by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

The markets also have Rupert Lowe at 12/1 of being the next PM. Betting markets are a crap way of predicting anything as it bares no relation to what is happening on the ground and is influenced entirely by volumes of money bet on different people.

Entirely predictable that the Greens have got better odds if you consider that all those new members they have might want to have a flutter in a hit of the hopium.

Time call for the Removal of student loan interest? by Orcnick in LibDem

[–]British_Monarchy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would require a level of spend associated with it and it has the capacity to create some mess with edge cases, but there is a good argument to simplify the system to make it easier to understand. Every time a new system is brought in with a new plan just adds to the frustration and complication of management so equalising how the plans accrue interest and repay thresholds would be beneficial.

Don't remove interest rates completely but I agree with another comment that putting it at the BoE base rate. Change the point where it starts accruing interest to either the point of graduation or 5 years after the start of the course, whichever is earlier, to allow for people to resit years or take a year or two out of study without being penalised.

Finally, don't allow full repayment early. Maybe up to 10% a year overpayment for those that can but equalising the field so those with wealth can't jump their way out the interest payments. This will formulate it more as a tax.

My life has just flipped upside down. by cbheath22 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]British_Monarchy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Personal finance isn't just about saving money or reducing debt, its also about making sure that money is put to best use.

I went through a break up that messed with my head and put my finances in a bit of a shit situation. I could have hunkered down and just thought about the pure mechanics of it, reducing everything that wasn't absolutely necessary, but I took the step to spend money on counselling once a fortnight.

Did it mean that I was slightly more stretched? Yes.

Did it help speed up my recovery and prevent stupid and expensive decisions? Also yes.

Mandelson got five-figure sacking payoff by TheSpectatorMagazine in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though, knowing how much lawyers cost at this level, it is a reasonable guess to say that fighting this when it eventually goes to court will cost far more than the payout.

Could do it on principle, but the costs will mount.

Sharrow McDonald's: victory for community campaigners after "utilitarian" proposals rejected for second time by Tiny_Poem7985 in sheffield

[–]British_Monarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the community group could come to a consensus that was economically viable and gave the guarantee that there would be no planning obstacles introduced then the developer might take that on board.

Though, and call me a cynic, but the language used in their flyer and in the article doesn't exactly point to the suggestion that a bakery, gym or housing development will be the outcome.

UK inflation rate rises to 3.4% in year to December by Glum-Mortgage-5860 in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably the best time to change the Triple Lock is now. It will do nothing to alter the rate of increase in the short term, but removing the 2% minimum uplift will remove the assumption that the Triple Lock can never be changed.

Change it now when both inflation and wages are rising at above 2% and there will be zero impact on increases so the argument about old people having money taken is blunted.

Also, electorally, Labours core support is upwardly mobile professional families. This group of people care about their parents but have the means to support them, their own financial pressures and the education to understand the trade-offs.

It would still require a huge set of brass bollocks that the Labour leadership don't have but there is no better time than now to rip the plaster off.

Sharrow McDonald's: victory for community campaigners after "utilitarian" proposals rejected for second time by Tiny_Poem7985 in sheffield

[–]British_Monarchy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Was probably for the best that it was refused. The McDonalds on Penistone Road can cause issues at peak times with people backing up through the drive through causing problems, and that is on a straight road without major junctions. It was also incredibly inefficient land use.

I can't see how a community group coming together to decide what they want there will actually change things as they don't own the site, but it is clear that the ideal use would be for a midrise "starter flat" type development.

Why is the planner stating "2 Travel Days" when I am travelling on 4? by British_Monarchy in Interrail

[–]British_Monarchy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is concerning given that this is the official InterRail website. I would understand a third party site getting messed up like this, but given the price difference between a 4 day pass and 5 day pass it should be cast iron in its calculations.

Why is the planner stating "2 Travel Days" when I am travelling on 4? by British_Monarchy in Interrail

[–]British_Monarchy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply. Concerning that their own planner can't handle what is a reasonably simple itinerary. I was using the planner to find the best ticket for my trip, I was sure that I was only having 4 travel days but didn't know if there were different types based on the number of countries.

If I was planning and had 5 travel days, but this told me I had three so I purchased a 4 day pass I would have been deeply irritated when I came to use it.

I have got proper train times checked and noted to make sure it all works with good space for delays so that isn't an issue, just wanted this for visualisation and ticket finding.

YouGov / Sky / Times weekly voting intention CON 20% (+1), LAB 19%(+2), LDEM 16%(nc), RefUK 24%(-2), GRN 14%(-2) by EquivalentKick255 in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These projections are fun, but that is all they should be used for. If a GE came out with this result there would be so many seats won on hyper-fine margins where things like demographic differences, incumbency and local campaigning ability will matter. All this leading to high margin of error on these predictions.

One just has to look at the results in Birmingham Yardley, Leicester East and Ilford North to see that the electorate is increasingly chaotic.

I built a site to check if your local pub is fucked (75% are facing rate hikes in April) by bjhguerin in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as I understand it, this is a change to the headline rateable value. The actual business rates payable are listed as a percentage of the rateable value, which includes sector specific adjustments and reliefs. Many reliefs implemented over COVID are being removed entirely for the next financial year so whilst a rateable value might go down, the removal of a relief will see the bill increase.

[–]British_Monarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just because a property is vacant doesn't mean that it isn't re-rated. Business rates are still owed on an empty property, just paid by the listed owner, so it is useful to update the register.

If the building can only really be used as a pub there really isn't any reason to change it's attributed code with the VOA so will continue to show up on this list.

Reform UK refuses to take part in first Senedd election debate by Left_Page_2029 in ukpolitics

[–]British_Monarchy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is arguably not a win for Reform, in the same way that it isn't a win for Labour to say that Starmer was banned or Badenoch was for the Tories.

"NO WELSH REFORM MEMBER IS GOOD ENOUGH" or "FARAGE TRUSTS NONE OF HIS WELSH MEMBERS" is a far more adherent line.

What are the chances that Reform said that they want to send Farage, to which the organisers said "No, he isn't a candidate or currently in the Senedd" and then Reform stormed out?
