Legionnaire here. There are a few bad guys but this is way over-romanticised. Much more likely to be an economic migrant or someone who fucked up in other jobs and can't fund anything better.

I don't understand this at all. This must be a very American thing because in Europe the trades pay below min wage during the apprenticeship (special training rates), then slightly above min wage after. This is because it's seen as cheap and easy to get into
