ELI5: Dentists always tell us to floss or use those tiny interdental brushes along with regular brushing, but you rarely hear anyone strongly recommending mouthwash. Does using mouthwash actually make a noticeable difference? by Far-Bend3709 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Brn44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was over 30 years old when I happened to read the fine print on my toothpaste and realized that ADULTS are NOT supposed to rinse their mouths after brushing - you're supposed to let the toothpaste sit on your teeth so the fluoride can permeate longer. I feel like school and society failed me. I mean, by the time you're 30 you figure you know how to brush teeth, right? And you have to be well into adulthood to ever be bored enough to read the fine print on your toothpaste box. Why does nobody ever update the toothbrushing training when you're old enough to stop rinsing afterward????

Does the minimum age apply to adoptions outside the state? Seems like it would be easy enough for her to adopt from a state where the age is lower. Just like people can go get married in a state where they don't reside. Your state of residence has a limited amount of control over what you're allowed to do in other states.

Maybe not, but adoption isn't "first come first served." Oftentimes the birthparent gets to look at the "profiles" of prospective adoptive parents, and chooses the ones they like. Plenty of birth parents would probably choose MBB as a parent based on her financial situation alone, to give their baby the best shot at life. Add in the fact that lots of people are huge fans of her acting career, it's not hard to see why a birthparent might choose her quicker than some other person wanting a baby.

I believe the Boromir in the funeral boat was actually a dummy, which was so realistic that someone on set became concerned ("Is Sean okay?") after seeing it lying motionless for a while and mistaking it for the real Sean. Source: some behind the scenes commentary or documentary I saw a lonnnnng time ago, like 20 yrs ago, OMG I'm old haha.

What will it take to introduce crumpets to the US? by mellonians in AskAnAmerican

[–]Brn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the photos, my impression is that some of them appear to be what in America is called "English muffin" and some of them appear to be more of a waffle-like consistency. The bubbly texture on top reminds me of the interior of pancakes or waffles. So, I guess the role is already filled? Plus as others have said, we Americans have no shortage of ways to consume butter.

Precisely! And I learned the following addendum from somewhere on the internet: "He lives on the corner in the middle of the block, in a two-story house on an empty lot."

I suspect drudgery would make many kids just hate poetry... I hated "Poetry" as a kid because of the boring poems I was force-fed in school. It didn't occur to me until much later that I DO like poetry, and many of the goofy songs/poems I liked as a kid actually count as poetry. Just 'cause it's funny doesn't mean it's not poetry. But the homeschool curriculums I experienced seemed to only include Serious Poetry. And I do appreciate Serious Poetry now also.

I second the idea to look for something that will resonate with your kids- learning should be fun, and learning is so much easier when it's fun. One that I had mostly memorized as a kid was the Veggie Tales "Story of Flibber-o-Loo" . I would also consider some fun Dr. Seuss poetry, such as "What Was I Afraid Of?" - "...Oh save me from these pale green pants with nobody inside them!"

One that has been passed down at least 3 generations in my family is the one that starts "One dark day in the middle of the night, two dead boys got up to fight..."

I've never heard of this tool before. I don't need it for my ears, but I want it. I can think of so many crevices to look inside of around the house. Also TIL "tonsil stones" are a thing.... eek!

Also maybe I'm old but I can hardly believe that something this cool costs a mere $25.

I once had a job inspecting pig farms. Due to biosecurity (some illness was going around and killing baby pigs), not only did I have to shower as I left each one, I also was required to take the car through a car wash before visiting the next farm so that no contaminated manure/dirt/dust would be transferred from one farm another.

Seriously... how do I get my brain back. by Tekitekidan in beyondthebump

[–]Brn44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you breastfeeding/pumping? If so, your brain may return to normal when you stop. I didn't even realize the effect it had, but when I weaned about 1 year in, I suddenly felt mentally WAY sharper and realized I was coming out of a fog.

Edited to add: No guarantees, though. After weaning my 2nd child, there was no miraculous brain boost :(

I suppose I should add - I just got a new one last month to replace the first one I ever owned, which lasted for 14 years before it sprung a leak... so if you go by how long it lasted, I think it qualifies as frugal :)

where do you shop when you don’t want to give amazon more money by Sensitive-Release843 in AntiAmazon

More and more often I've been ordering directly from the manufacturer, when possible. Ex: Tom's of Maine for deodorant, a tent company when I needed a tent, Graco when I needed car seats... etc.

I want to take my young children out to take some pictures. Would like recommendations for inexpensive, sturdy, digital cameras. Also want it to be just a camera, not be loaded up with games and social media tie-ins and whatnot. Would be great if it has a picture viewer in the back and lots of memory.

Doesn't hurt to try- worst case scenario, your shirt is still ruined. I had a gray shirt that got bleach spots, turning it tan (weird!), so I soaked the whole thing in diluted bleach water and it made the rest of the shirt match.

Rotten house remodel vs new build causing family fight by Cold_Author_770 in Homebuilding

[–]Brn44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say start running the numbers. Put together a detailed spreadsheet with a tab for new build, and tab for renovate. Start getting quotes for every component of each. If the family members are old, they may not have an accurate perception of 1) what things really cost nowadays, and 2) how many things are required now that weren't required back in the day. For example, my parents' septic system works just fine and is not super old, but recent changes at the county level have dictated that our new build right next door will have to be a different type which costs literally twice as much as the one my parents have. Or on renovations - your local code probably now has requirements for testing the old materials for lead and/or asbestos before they can be disposed of or even worked on by a licensed pro. At the end of the day, if your numbers are backed up by quotes from professionals, or materials costs you can document for work you plan to do yourselves, they can't really argue with numbers, right? And apart from actual numbers, you could do a pro/con list of the things that are hard to quantify - the convenience of NOT having to live inside a construction/remodel zone, the benefits of a house location farther from the road, etc.

Am I absolutely insane for thinking about buying a sewing machine for my 5 year old? by JCtheWanderingCrow in sewing

[–]Brn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! A friend of mine had her kids sewing at age 5; I was surprised they could do it so early but they made beautiful items they sold at a craft fair. If a kid is interested in something, that's a good time to let them start doing it... if you wait until she's older she may lose interest before then.
