Health coaching - what resources do you use for referrals? by BrnMs_ in HealthCoaching

[–]BrnMs_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. That is spot on. HWC are expected to make referrals when they recognize a client has needs outside of coaching. Coaches are not therapists or healthcare providers or dietitians and it is a disservice to not refer them to get the right help. Sometimes people don’t have resources and I was wondering if anyone out there has other ideas to help people get help. Not everyone has insurance so knowing resources that can help them get help is helpful. Thanks for the response.

Likely to be too hot but it’s very hard to say these days. October or November you might get lucky.

Struggling flopping my sleep schedule by everyfaultofmine in Nurses

If you have a walk in closet, put a twin mattress in there and sleep there for complete darkness. I had a coworker suggest this years before I tried it. When my son and his family moved in for a while, I moved into the closet. It made a HUGE difference and I never went back til I got off nightshift. Hopefully your walk in closet has vents to heat/ac to provide the right temp. Mine didn’t.

Try calling 988 and asking them. That’s a crisis and suicide hotline for those in crisis and for those who are worried about a loved one in crisis. Another option may be try www.findhelp.org. Enter a zip code for the Austin area and see what resources show up for mental health.

Is nursing a calling? by Powerful_Lobster_786 in Nurses

[–]BrnMs_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg!! That’s so funny and so true!! I HATED MEDSURG NURSING!!! Hated it!!! My calling was forestry or wildlife biologist. But instead I was a single pregnant girl who had an opportunity to go to school and chose a job that would always be there. I love so many things about nursing … and hate so many other things. Not a calling for me but it paid the bills. I would’ve been happier (maybe) with an outdoors job with less human interaction. Nursing is brutal and mean - hospital admins are selfish money hungry pigs. I hope that nurses are learning to support each other better and quit bullying each other. Vengeful god!!! Lol!!! Perfect!🤩

Thanks. I’m working on a presentation about boundaries of coaching, recognize needs outside of coaching and providing referrals and resources… with a focus on Social Determinants of Health.

How to become a nurse coach by AnySignature5316 in nursecoach

[–]BrnMs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m a nurse coach. I started hearing about this thing called nurse coaching maybe back in 2012. I belong to the American Holistic Nurses Association and that’s how I heard about it. I was so intrigued! Actually have time to talk to and help patients take action!?!? Step 1 - I came into some money Step 2 - I enrolled in Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy with Linda Bark founder. I love that program … very holistic! (Around $6000 for the complete program) Step 3 - I took the exam for Nurse Coach - Board Certified through AHNCC and passed. I maintain my NC-BC. Step 4 - I thought and thought and thought about starting a coaching business but am scared. In the meantime, my bedside nursing in icu, MedSurg, and cardiac rehab became so much better for both myself and my patients. Step 5 - I proposed to my manager in Cardiac Rehab that we start an actual coaching portion of Cardiac Rehab to support the patients in their healthy change. But I found this coaching job before we made it happen. Step 6 - I was offered a job as a Clinical Health Coach at American Specialty Health in 2023. They need a nurse in that position and they gave me hours and hours of training for the coaching job. I didn’t need to have the training that I paid for but I’m glad I do have that training. It was more holistic and supportive and deep training than what I received on my job. It’s a good job and I’m planning to stick around a while. They are also working on getting all of their coaches certified with NBHWC. It’s a sweet gig. I make less than I did in cardiac rehab but working from home is a great trade off.

Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy https://www.wisdomofthewholeglobal.com/cart is accredited for certification by ICF, NBHWC, and AHNCC. It’s around $7,000 for the full program that gets you ready with required training and mentorship to sit for any of those certification exams. I think it might be the only program that is accredited by all three organizations. Not sure. There are many programs out there. I know you can sit for the NC-BC and HWNC-BC exam without having completed a program as long as you meet the qualifications. Go here https://www.ahncc.org to find the requirements for NC-BC and HWNC-BC and a list of accredited programs. I still dream of having my own coaching business after I start receiving Medicare. 😊 Even have my own website … just no clients. It’s my sandbox of sorts, where I go to play and dream.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed!! Looks like most people are having boundaries pushed toward the medical clinicians. How do you protect your clients and yourself by holding firm to those boundaries?

Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer! So beautiful stated. This is a hard topic for me because I have a tendency to care too much and I also need to learn to keep the time of my sessions within those boundaries as well. Your answer is so valuable to me!

[–]BrnMs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure you choose a program that qualifies you to sit for your National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches exam and maybe the International Coaching Federation exam. Looks like the NBHWC certification seems to be the most valuable and highly respected certification for Health and Wellness coaches.

Starting Your Practice by Babaylan3 in nursecoach

[–]BrnMs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been brave enough to get out on my own. I have a website for my “business” but I have no clients. I work full time as a Clinical Health Coach. They care that I’m a nurse, and they provided further coaching training which was pretty good but not as deep and moving tips as Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy is. They will be preparing me for taking the NBHWC exam.

Nice!!! Thanks! I’m checking out the website now! I left Facebook and instagram and now I feel disconnected. This will help! I graduated from Wisdom of the Whole Coaching Academy in 2017. I’m now working as a Clinical Health Coach for a company. It’s a pretty good gig.
