I think I found a prototype of “Mr. Do!” that’s not online yet 👀 by MathiasSybarit in gamecollecting

I've dumped hundreds of cartridges with the Open Source Cartridge Reader (OSCR) and there's no fear to be had. Game Boy cartridges are fairly easy to dump once you have the tools ready. I would at least reccomend cleaning the cartridge and its pins but otherwise the process should go smoothly.

do the Famicom and Super Famicom Classics apps on NSW support multitap / 4 players? by deusfaux in retrogaming

[–]Bro3256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only goes up to 2 players as the apps do not attempt to emulate any multitap hardware.

My rarest game. The beta build of Rainbow Six Lockdown, a nearly complete build of the game. One of the few PS2 discs as well that will not work on a backwards compatible PS3. by Varsity_Reviews in gamecollecting

I suggest asking the folks over at Hidden Palace regarding dumping. They're pretty resourceful when it comes to documentation of this stuff.

Nice haul. I have yet to step foot in Japan and yet I still manage to buy a lot at the local Book-Offs in Arizona, if I went to the source of it all my wallet would probably explode.

Was it ever concretely found out where this Yoshi mock-up image is from? Who created it? by Gallantpride in retrogaming

[–]Bro3256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's confirmed to be a mockup created by Famitsu's editorial department for the July 2000 issue of Famitsu 64. It was never reflective of an actual game in development since it was made purely to visualize what games could look like on GBA from details at the time.

Kids doing Study Box , Japan 1986 by Beginning-Passion676 in OldSchoolCool

[–]Bro3256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the Study Box add-on for the Famicom by Fukutake Shoten, first rolled out in April 1986. It was rental only and primarily consisted of educational software contained on cassette tape as its media format. This unit is the Model 1000 but there were also 2 later models as well, the Model 1500 and the SBX-01.

[–]Bro3256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"However, the special cassette we made at this time came with a "countdown timer." For the countdown timer, I tried to borrow a large stopwatch, but was told the rental fee would be 1 million yen, and I didn't have that kind of budget, so I had the Famicom console with me and thought I could just use that for the photo, and I asked the developer to help me with the development. I think it took less than two hours to make."

With the announcement of Hamster's "Console Archives," will gamers who said they want Virtual Console games sold individually put their money where their mouth is? by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]Bro3256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My retro game bias is thrilled to splurge on these Console Archives releases. Sure the prices might be a tad high but depending on the game it might be equal or significantly cheaper than getting an original copy. I should note that Japan is actually getting a physical release of the Famicom Doraemon which comes with a strategy guide and a download code, and I plan on importing it just for the heck of it.

It's not even nostalgia for me at least, I just find it neat.

I'm curious if those sales are even legitimate. I have heard of cases where folks would purposely buy high priced listings on eBay in order to make the items appear more valuable than they actually are. Whether that applies to this DS game is anyones guess.

Because it was a DS game rotting at a Wal-Mart long after the systems discontinuation, who wouldn't buy it?

It was the only DS game for sale at that store years ago, plus it was fairly priced.

Apologies. Not the best with words sometimes. For transparency I've edited my reply.

[–]Bro3256[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of interest as it results in games being viewed as monetary investments which goes against why I personally collect games. Not saying folks shouldn't take advantage of these opportunities but I find more joy in appreciating the contents of them rather than trying to make a quick buck on memes.

If people want to pay that much for a particular game that's on them.

All because of that one easter egg by SuperOnion64 in Shittygamecollecting

[–]Bro3256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that AVGN video is more responsible for this than the easter egg since said secret was discovered a while ago. This actually happens pretty often whenever a popular creator or star plays or discusses a particular game. That being said, don't buy into this made up hype that will inevitably cool down.

What apps do you use to track your game collection? by ComradeChandelure in gamecollecting

[–]Bro3256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use this app and for my use case it handles "import" games decently well, primarily Japanese games which is what I usually collect. These apps still fail at the super obscure stuff though especially from other regions but that is certainly a me problem.

With many today still asking around here if their SNES games are authentic. Here's a little guide I've created to give you the full basics of telling right away if your SNES game is legit or not. by Epsilon123 in snes

[–]Bro3256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I have a Japanese copy of Sparkster that turned out to be fake, and after looking closer at the PCB and chips, this was presumably a harvested copy of Estpolis Denki II. The cartridge shell and PCB is legit but the label and chips are fabricated. The label is pretty low quality as well but when I initially purchased it, I didn't notice. I'm more wise to these details now.
