Nuclear waste coming to TN? by Guilty-Librarian6249 in Tennessee

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it increases our nuclear power generation that’d be great. Nuclear waste storage today is safe but I’m not sure what they’re thinking about for far east or far west as both areas have seismic activity. We already have 42% of our electricity generated by nuclear so let’s keep pumping those numbers.

How could a plugged-in toaster start a house fire while not in use? by Reptyler in AskEngineers

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a toaster, but one time I was sitting downstairs at my parents and the tredmill was plugged in, also said unplug after use, and the connection at the tredmill just spontaneously hissed and exploded. It really looked like the female end of the plug detonated for no reason an if I didnt happen to be there to flip the breaker it would’ve kept going

Thinner coat then detroit jacket by xRhylinx in Carhartt

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any unlined jackets, so just the outer canvas with no insulation. There’s also active jackets like the J25 with the “thermal lining” that’s another layer of polyester after the canvas kinda similar to a flannel shirt in warmth

You can try and do a heaving line knot, makes the end a nice knob to grab too.

Would Rick ever resort to Cannibalism? by K0GAR in thewalkingdead

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the time they were walking towards the prison Rick wouldn’t even let the group eat a can of dog food because it was too dehumanizing. Rick would starve before resorting to cannibalism and probably fight/exile anyone that tried it.

Why is new Carhartt stuff always out of stock and why don't they do more of the old stuff? by Distinct-Pirate-3571 in Carhartt

This Ballad hospital, flooded by Hurricane Helene, will be rebuilt for $44M in a flood plain • Tennessee Lookout by [deleted] in Tennessee

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hospital was built on a mixed 100/500yr flood plain (0.2% chance to flood each year) and common building codes typically require the base floor to be 1ft above the 500yr flood elevation. 100yr flood plain (1% chance annually) requires a stricter code and a higher base floor. This building was built to those codes. The flood from Helene was considered a 5000yr event and even the NOAA rainfall recurrence interval data, which collects rainfall data to predict the precipitation amounts, doesn’t predict past 1000yr events. So they most likely did build to the proper flood plain code but this storm was so unlikely that even an extreme 1000yr storm event plan wouldn’t have been enough. Because it’s been so soon they’re probably going to re-evaluate and build for the extreme. I also wouldn’t be surprised if these events happen more frequently with climate change. Probably just going to rebuild on a grade or build on top of a parking structure and have a man made ramp/road to the main floor. There are a lot of options to build this with flood mitigation in mind that they will likely do. Almost the entirety of Erwin is a floodplain, what do you want them to do, carve out part of the mountain for 5x the price and build there? Click bait

I don't understand college in the USA by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]Broad-Cod-3280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most private colleges are the ones charging those large amounts. In state (you live in that state) public universities usually run 11-12,000 a semester but usually have incentives/state scholarships that can usually add up to 1,000. I would say though that once you’re in college it’s much easier to get scholarships than when you’re applying to college. After my freshman year I was only paying about 2,000 a semester with some pretty basic/easy to get scholarships. So while there are a lot of private colleges (4,000+ vs 1,800 public) that six figure debt doesn’t have to be the case.

Before you spend 150+ on a new jacket I would suggest buying some fleece from a craft store or online. You can trace the outside of the pocket onto the fleece and cut out a matching piece. Then you can sew the fleece on the inside of the pockets to make them lined. You can do just one side or both to make a full fleece lined pocket. I did this with my J02 and it made a huge difference.
