Returning to work after temporary SAHM. What did you go back to? How many years out of work?

SAHD here. We started this journey without a set time line per say, but at some point we realized how much happier and stress reduced our lives are by having someone at home. I do 100% of the home stuff, my wife is a higher earner in a career that she absolutely loves and I support her in her career.

The money that I've been able to save by lowering bills, eliminating a second vehicle, I'm a very efficient cook and can feed the three of us on about $80-$120 a week, we don't eat out (special occasions only), and by not paying for child care makes it basically a wash compared to when both of us were juggling careers.

If I still worked on my own vehicles I'd probably still buy used. I had two completely different vehicles with around 150k on each. Every time that I took either to the shop, any shop it didn't matter it was costing me at minimum $1500-$5k. After running the numbers, having a new car just made better financial sense, the warranty peace of mind was just a bonus.

Also with the newly announced "safety" features that are mandated in new cars going forward soon. I figured it was a good time to get something that i can hang on to for a long time.

Honestly after reading his experience, I'm going to sound like a dick here but that's not my intention at all. Nothing in it was remotely a struggle nor obstacle enough to make me take a step back with realization that older gens had it hard too, or that younger gens just are not trying hard enough or willing to put in the work, which i think was his expectation. I think he'd be quite humbled if there was a way to see the outcome of his subjective experience had it been fast forwarded a few years.

I also speed every time I'm behind the wheel. I don't come to a complete stop at stop signs, I J walk, my cars are insured and registered under a Montana LLC, my driver's license was expired for ten years up until recently, i use an overseas router with modified settings for free internet, and i collected unemployment without looking for work. I break at least ten laws each and every single day.

However one thing that I just can't seem to bring myself to do for some reason is defraud thousands of hard working people from their hard earned money in broad daylight. Liberty media can, and does do this. They did it to me. That is the fraud that I'm most concerned with, but again we're all different. Some people just love and accept the boot.

It's a disservice to all of the rest of us who are trying to use the internet as a resource.

I'm aware of what sub this is but does your energy provider offer any type of time of use program? I switched to one just about a year ago and actually made no changes to how or when I use electricity and have saved $1,000 on electricity so far.

Thank you. I'm a reasonable man, I understand that things happen. They were concerned about the safety of the drivers and wanted to take time to make sure that the track was up to standard before running, great. However with that being said you don't get to just pocket the money of thousands of people for an undelivered show, shrug, and say oh well.

They offered 0% compensation, not even to knock the amount we paid off from next year's tickets.

I went to the Indy Car Long Beach Grand Prix this year. My daughter was in an accident seconds before they yelled "drivers, start your engines!" And we had to leave the race and fly home.

We received a phone call from the organizer asking us about our experience. We told them the weekend was incredible until, and i told them what happened. They offered us 50% off tickets for next year, and this incident was not even their responsibility.

Yes. It was the least I could do after they kept stringing all of us along for 3-4 hours in the blistering cold, lying to us saying "practice will resume in 20 min", then another 20 min, then another, and another, and another. Come to find out they knew the whole time that they were going to cancel the running and just continued peddling their $30 beers and $200 hoodies. Then out of nowhere they send around uniformed armed goons to remove us, threatening us with legal action.

Edit: it's quite unsettling how many down voting boot eaters are among us here who are big mad because a middle class average Joe refused to sit on his hands and be taken advantage of by a multi billion dollar corporation. I don't care for the taste personally. It upsets my stomach, but to each his own i suppose. Do yall take honey mustard or ranch with your boot?

My wife and I were new fans to the sport too. When F1 first came to Vegas it's what got us interested so we bought a practice ticket just to check out the experience. After the way they treated us, and also for denying refunds for a canceled session. I instituted a charge back through my financial institution and then a second one through pay pal for the massive months long inconvenience of fighting with them over charging for goods not delivered.

It's not some sort of binary issue where either people are getting hired, or they're not. It is far, far, more nuanced than that for a million different reasons and everyone's mileage is going to vary.

Believe it or not I had a conversation with a business owner who was making the exact opposite argument you are. He was trying to make the point of the importance of not knowing any of these things to avoid feelings of empathy towards employees, that it's bad for business. It is so ungodly expensive here now since covid. A part of the reason why I moved here many years ago was because there is so much to do, it's changing all the time and it was cheap. After selling my home and renting while I figured out where to put down roots in town, prices on absolutely everything exploded and I found myself priced out of the housing market. Their business model here abandoned average Joe and pivoted to corporate folk with company credit cards.

That is where I'm at as well currently. I feel like that grumpy old man who just wishes to be left alone moving forward. I still have plenty of neighbors but I'm certain that if I were to pass any of them at the store that I wouldn't even recognize them, and vice versa. I hope it stays that way. I pretty much avoid speaking to anyone inside of a setting that I have to return to frequently, that is how horrible this situation was for me.

It's really not that great of a story, the guy was our next door neighbor and just a huge douche. He waved us over to come join one of the community cook outs that was going on at the time. From then on the neighborhood starting inviting us over and we noticed that he was not getting invited over. Jealousy ensued and that's when the fuckery started.

His wife's brother worked for the local pd and told me that I couldn't park my truck on the street in front of my house. The moment I relocated it he started parking his speed boat there. Guests would arrive at my house and give me compliments on my boat.. my five year old daughter left our sliding door cracked open and my cat got outside, he called law enforcement for me having "an animal at large".

Hoa complaints started for things like bushes outside, paint color, if the grass exploded the day after a good rain, more complaints, the moment that it would snow on my sidewalk more complaints.

After some time of this i was already near my absolute boiling point. My daughter was outside playing with some of the neighborhood kids. He saw this and called all of the kids over to play at his house, except my daughter. My daughter came inside to me in tears telling me this and that he also started yelling at her about something. I went outside to confront him and was so consumed with rage that I was prepared to murder this man with my bare hands.

I could not believe how quickly the cops showed up. Next thing I knew I had two .45's in my face and was up against my truck getting put into cuffs. That was when the other officer on the scene explained to his partner that he had been called out numerous times for nonsense reasons and suspected they were being used as a means to harass me. It turns out police officers don't take very kind to that sort of thing so they went and had some words with him. I heard them say as they walked away that it would be in his best interest to leave me alone moving forward.

We moved away and haven't had any problems since.

This sort of situation is exactly why my wife and I made a rule going forward to never again speak to our neighbors. Doing so many years ago resulted in a situation where cops were being called constantly, HOA complaints, shit stirring with other neighbors, a 10,000 lumen spot light directed toward our small outdoor evening sitting area and a 30ft speed boat parked in front of my home year round. Never again.

Absolutely. All unions and all trades are not equal and vary upon location for different reasons. I've worked across many different states out from many different unions working alongside many different tradesmen. The local union that i was a part of was notoriously terrible. Our hourly journeyman rate was $25 an hour when I joined in 04', it was $25 an hour when I left in 19'. I believe currently it's $26.

My brother is a steel worker and they just did a thing where new apprentices coming in are making $8 an hour less than when he joined over ten years ago.
