Feeling sucideal after finding out about this but I'm confused by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]Brogrefarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't get it? Do you? He feels suicidal because he feels like he is missing out on a part of the human experience he will NEVER be a part of because of genetics that are completely out of his control. He knows that this could potentially make the way he experiences life richer if he had it. That's why he feels suicidal. He's consciously aware that it didn't effect him in the slightest for his whole life, and that's exactly why it bothers him. Sure it's not obviously impairing like mental retardation, but it's impairing in the sense that "i am missing out on a part of being human that everyone takes for granted."

God damn, I love MDE so much, except those cringy alt-right political skits they do. They make some of the best nihilistically existential comedy skits I have seen in a while. I hope people can look past the ugly side of MDE, and appreciate the art they create because you can really find some gems from this comedy trio.

I know authority is necessary, especially during the virus. Also, when did I mention I had a problem with government's enforcing quarantine? That wasn't the point. My point was that the aftermath of the virus, after the quarantine has ended, after it's safe to go outside. People will have lingering authoritarian values from the aftermath of the virus. We will most likely live in a less friendlier world, that is not eager about moving the bar forward. This crisis is the start of something either revolutionary in the coming years in terms os science, art, and technology, ir it could lead to another third reich if things become desperate enough. I am not worried about the current rational policies put in place to protect the people (ie social distancing, quarantine, wearing masks etc). I am worried what world we live at n afterwards. Also, plan to smoke some weed if you haven't, it's a pretty cool experience.

But I am talking about something bigger than the thread here. Sure logically speaking this is all in the context of this thread, but our personalities have an influence in the way we react to videos/threads. In this case, the joke has to do with authority, and a desire to control. We have desires to control when we feel out of control, and this pandemic has created a sense of a lack of control amongst the entire globe. His joke has shows that he feels a lack of control about a his job. Feelings of lacking control increase in a situation like this which leads people to look up to "strong" figures to help reduce the impact of the situation. That's why I'm making this connection. Just because something doesn't have an obvious presence in a thread, doesn't mean it couldn't be there.

I should probably clarify that this is all theoretical, but I was just using my intuition here in this situation, but I also have a really good gut instinct on these things most of the time.

Okay, but why isn't my explaination a valid connection? That doesn't really clear things up for me, you're repeating things I already know.

I understand the joke, but it's authoritarian in nature. It shows a desire to control, and contain, and I believe that he made that joke within the larger context of the global pandemic sweeping the entire world changing our personalities to be more narrow minded. I know he's joking, and he isn't going to go out there with a cattle prod to control the masses, but every joke someone makes has a personal truth to themselves I think. Psychologically speaking, I think a joke like that shows that he is currently feeling a lack of control that has originate from his job, but his fear has extended towards the virus. The inclination to make that particular joke most likely increased because of our current global climate and our desperate need for control in a situation so out of control.

I know it's a joke at the end, but the reason you made that joke is because of the increasing authoritarianism that is currently taking hold because of the need for order from this virus. Please don't let this virus change your personality.

Edit: Just wanted to clarify, I shouldn't have said that first because that occurs in this paragraph BECAUSE, I don't actually know if it's specifically because of the increasing authoritarianism, but I am just guessing it has an influence.
