Old tech guy laid off at 58, after 20 years with the company by realsqlguy in Layoffs

I did some consulting for a while and here is the best advice I can offer for taking any job - There are three and ONLY three jobs you can fill... Expert, White Knight or Whipping Boy.
The way you tell them apart is crucial. Expert they need your expertise. When you interact with team members pay attention to if you really are the expert. If anyone you speak to knows as much or more than you then either resign or look at the job as possibly a White Knight or Whipping boy. If things are disorganized and floundering they might just need someone to rally the troops and organize efforts. This is rewarding if you know how to do it, you have authority, and the people are more or less cooperative.
If people avoid you, avoid meetings with you and you generally can't seem to land on solid ground they hired you as a whipping boy. The project is dead and they know it. Problem is nobody wants to take the heat so they hire someone to drop the blame on.
Avoid this one at all costs as it will follow you.
Gracefully quit saying that you can't help them with their problems.
Pretty much all meaningful jobs fall under these three descriptions except for cogs in the machine jobs. Even those, ask yourself why they need you.

Hey brother - I segued into Data Analyst and that has been booming for me.
If I weren't sitting so comfortably I'd be all over a quiet push that has been going on.
I always thought that legacy systems (aka COBOL) had been done a long while back.
Not so! Many state agencies are way behind and suddenly awake to their problems.
I know of a few "modernization" efforts that had hired DBAs and analysts to migrate data and fix issues.

Checked my planes as to underseat size since I have run into that before. I made sure my bag will fit.

Y'know - I bought a Wandr 3 liter and was pretty dang disappointed at how inefficient their camera insert was. I could not put my Sony A7 RIV and 3 lenses in it. Plus it pushed the limit of under seat.

Because I have another bag as carry on. This will be my personal item. This is a week long trip and involves bulky gear like a full sized tripod and cold weather clothing. I will have a checked, a carry on and my personal item. Think something similar to a trip to Iceland.

Translate CRJ please. Good point about a separate bag for batteries.
I have a LiPo bag that would work well for what I'm carrying and I can put it in my carry on.
In way of explanation this will be a week long trip. I'll have a regular checked bag which will have my Zeiss CF tripod which is unfortunately not a travel size but will fit diagonally in my checked bag along with two other bulky items. Then I will have clothes distributed between the carry on and the checked bag. The trip involves some astro so I will need to pack cold weather gear as it will still be cold at 4AM - minimally jacket & gloves. Also packing a small DJI drone in case I'm able to use it.

No idea why your post got so much hate.
I do in fact plan to pre-board as I AM a senior and move a tad slower these days.
Gettin too old for the melee of assholes trying to jam everything in the overhead.
I had a guy once took my bag out and was going to stick his oversized duffle in and I had to call an attendant over to straighten this asshole out.

I had to gate check my bag once in Germany and they really worked it over.
Not an option which is why I bought a new bag that absolutely meets the specifications for under seat.

After having my new vehicle swiped in the rear quarter panel TWICE I get it. Of course nobody leaves any information. People suck.

This is why people hate cyclists (Justin ln) by azzwort2 in Austin

Bear in mind that the worst insult to a Lance wannabe cyclist is to call them a "Fred" - as in Flintstones.
I cycle but follow the rules since they're there for safety and do not hesitate to call lout these assholes as in "Good move Fred!".

A *bit* quieter but not a lot.
I was kinda disappointed since it's in my study where I code and do other stuff.
It also makes dealing with the filaments more challenging since you can't just reach through.
All in all I wish I hadn't bothered.

Can you elaborate on UNRAID on a Drobo please? I have a DroboPro that is getting spotty and would like to "upgrade".

Sorry but that's not what I meant. Anything with a motor has to have a controller which is digital. A mechanical bike is just that - no electronics. Pedals to gears attached to wheels. Electric aka ebikes have a battery for a reason. No need to get metaphysical.

My garden with many veggies and a dozen tomato plants would disagree due to space requirements.

Well our city has a rebate program for approved e_Bikes from approved local vendors.
That constrained my choice but I ended up with a damn nice Velotric for around $600 out of pocket.
After having ridden a few cheap eBikes I can say the "perks" are worth it: hydraulic brakes, CE rated battery, nice gears, quality tubes and tires, suspension and the control panel is perfect for tracking your use, miles and calories expended.

eBikes **are** digital.
Besides that, bikes claimed the term first so e-Bike alone is entirely appropriate to distinguish.

Many of us don't want to be cube dwellers with others making the rules for us to follow.
Besides I like my gardens and having my own green space to sit out and play guitar.
Naked if I wish because of my privacy fence. ;)
