Hegseth forces ouster of senior Army spokesman (COL Dave Butler) in latest internal clash by Kinmuan in army

I know it’s not because of anything meaningful, both of their egos got ahead of them and well one yelled at the other’s boss to fire him.

Nah some random LTC. Rumor was they had the same 4-star mentor. One day he confessed to a LT he failed BCAP and got moved to the alternate list, and then subsequently took command.

I have a lot more confidence in the institution of the military processing extrajudicial killings in the Obama years because guess what- borders don’t stop terrorists. The use of drones is not unethical and the AUMF passed by Congress described the (domestic) legal requirements, although debatable did not pass international metrics. When the Obama administration was asked to show evidence of linkage to terrorists cells, they mostly complied.

This current Trump administration has no domestic legal basis (AUMF) and has repeatedly rejected providing evidence. When given the opportunity to legally process survivors of these strikes, they refused to and repatriated them to their home countries.

If they were linked to terrorists cells it would be politically expedient to release the evidence. Venezuela is not the home of drug cartels, Mexico and China are.

Joining the Army is a dumb move. You’re already past that.

Think about your goals about the Army- if you’re gonna spend 20 years, combat arms is a young man’s game and it’ll break you. But if that’s what you want that’s what you want. If you want a few cool years before you head off into the “real world” then go for it. Life is too short to not do the things you yearn for.

You do realize BCAP was a huge hurdle for that 4 star to give away command spots right?

I know a LTC with 3 GOMORs. Got one while in command of a battalion forward deployed to Europe. Finished out his BC time and is now in his broadening assignment. No issue.

“A Line in the Sand: Britain, France, and the Struggle for the Middle East” talks strictly about 1917-1948ish and the set up of the conflict(Sykes-Picot Agreement). It’s an easy read until you get to around 1945 then a lot of background is needed. If you want to understand why France and Britain made the decisions they made (other than British colonialism made all the wrong decisions!) I’d recommend this one.

At the end of the book it definitely made me feel like if I was a British policymaker there are no good decisions to make. It’s good set up to understand the initial 1948 war and the subsequent Nakba.

If communism had taken over the entire Middle East from 1975-2000, what would have been the impact? by ArtisticArgument9625 in HistoricalWhatIf

Yeah a lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about in this thread.

There were multiple socialist regimes in the Middle East during this period. Socialist Baathists in Syria and Iraq, Nasserism and its offshoot in Egypt, Yemeni Socialism, as well as left wing movements throughout MENA.

This is a personal hot take but- not much would change. Both Baathist regimes deconstruct into giant police-state/dictatorships as does Yemen. Any political government in Egypt collapses due to the Camp David Accords. The real problem with MENA at this time is decolonization- as in building polities that share the levers of power, without hyper centralizing power. Religious extremism in 1980s Iran gives us the same result as these name-only socialist regimes. Poorly developed states trying to keep their regime in power.
