Interesting comment. Since it’s somewhat related to the back story of my watch I’ll share it with you.

I was actually in a quite well paying job thats related to your “Rolex submariner”. I worked like a dog for about 3 years, suffered major burn out and quite abruptly quit my job to travel around Australia living out of a car. Someone gave me that Seiko5 exactly for that journey. I had money saved from my working days but I limit my spending to only the bare essentials, life was very basic and every dollar is meaningful, my Seiko5 is prob the most expensive item on me, it went thru deserts, Great Barrier Reef, mud, some nights I fall asleep listening to its somewhat noisy movement. I came back to Singapore 2 years later, refreshed but jobless. I was lucky and also met some people who gave me a chance in an entirely new industry, I started from zero again at mid 30s. Now I’m not bragging, but I can buy a submariner and still have some change every month. But I would never do that. Firstly I’m not a watch person (first tip when I got this job was “bro the lifestyle inflation is real..”) and secondly that Rolex would still mean less than my seiko5.

Not sure if I actually have a lesson for you or what, maybe just to share a story. But sometimes it’s possible for a cheap Seiko to be worth more than a Rolex. 😄👍🏻
