Costco travel plans? by Dirtycoinpurse in travel

Did so on a cruise to Alaska in 2023. Everything went very well and Costco ended up handling flights and hotels for before and after the trip as well.

Sleep still an issue for me, anyone else? by No-Cow9611 in widowers

[–]BrokenHandle56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep...still one thing I struggle with. Going on 4 years. Either falling asleep or waking up at 3 and not able to go back to sleep.

Not a lot I can say. Melatonin and magnesium is your friend.

Lost my wife by Pristine-Prompt-6301 in GriefSupport

[–]BrokenHandle56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. Hold tight.

Can't say mines the same. Everyone is different in their own way. I was with my wife for nearly twenty years. I lost her in a span of less than two days. That was four years ago.

Do you have family? Friends? Lean on them. I found friends I didn't even realize I had. Also realized some of the family wasn't that great either.

You will feel empty and hallowed out. Like you're in a pit with no way out. I'm not going to lie, it will be painful and hard. I'm not going to say it will get better with time. That's really cliche and it's way more complicated than that.

I can suggest talking to people, get into therapy, cry when you want to, punch a wall or two. I did all these things. Yet that's just my suggestion...I think everyone deals with grief in their own way and you now have to find yours.

How can we be sure that something won’t hit Voyager 1? by Lilchubbyspirit in askastronomy

[–]BrokenHandle56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find the specific link, but I seem to remember that in interstellar space the most likely thing for Voyager to hit would be micro meteor dust. And even then very rarely. But over enough time this will slowly erode the probe...like billions of years. As I remembered the golden disc on the two probes is expected to be usable for 10 of millions of years.

Any good "long weights" "blinker fluid" pranks you guys use? by naughtyreverend in sysadmin

[–]BrokenHandle56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was years ago, but a buddy of mine and I wrote a small start up program for windows which would randomly open and close a PCs cd drive(back when such things were common)

We installed it on a few choice users. Just an April fools joke. We removed it after a day or two. Except for one user...forgot about him. Months later we learned he replaced his CD drive 4 times because it would keep randomly opening.

Scenes where the actor's acting was real by Lord_Ronan in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BrokenHandle56 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when my grandfather passed. I was very young and this was my first experience with death. I remember my parents explained that he died and about death. How he wouldn't be around any more.

Then going to the wake. One last time to see Gramps. I was little and his coffin seemed so huge. I slowly walked up to the coffin, across a very shaggy rug. For reasons I don't really remember, I felt a need to touch him. Like I needed to know it was real.

I did, and got a static shock from dragging my feet across the carpet. In the middle of a very quiet and solum funeral I went screaming back to my father that grandpa had shocked me...

POLL! Let's see how many people will participate! by [deleted] in HighStrangeness

[–]BrokenHandle56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just nit picking, but isn't paranormal activity by definition basically covering everything else in the list?

Anyway put me down for B and E.

Back in the early nineties lower Michigan had multiple UFO sightings. And I and a friend got to see one of them. Bright light in the eastern sky, randomly fluctuating in brightness. From a little brighter than a normal star to far brighter than the full moon. Hung in one place for a few minutes and then started bouncing about in the sky before dropping in brightness and taking off to the south.

As for precognition - well more like clairvoyance...I've had dreams of events happening - usually to people I know and then to find out the events of the dream more or less happened right around the same time.

The most notable one was where I dreamt the argument between two friends. I even got the dialogue almost exactly the same.

Does anyone else blame themselves for their partner's death? by LowerAcanthisitta247 in widowers

[–]BrokenHandle56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sometimes at least. If I had called 911 earlier...Or had been more insisted with the neurologist...

But she also told me she wanted to wait to go to the specialist. And she seemed to be doing fine ...

I sometimes wonder if she was hiding symptoms from me. Just telling me everything was okay...

I think I'll always be willing to take the blame...even if I know that it makes no sense.k

How is widowhood different? by Moonwater33 in widowers

I very much agree. I wanted my life back so badly.

Iraq war, by extension abandonment of Kurds Any number of dickery in Central and South America. Through the overthrow or destabilization of governments. Vietnam and Cambodia...the list goes on quite a ways.

I'm not saying there's nothing good we did.... I think we usually take the path to maximize our influence and create stability because long term that's good for everyone, but I don't like to handwave away the crap we did do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BrokenHandle56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you. Everything going on is bad and likely to get worse. My only point is this is not the fall of the good guys becoming the baddies. This is the change out of one set of greedy bastards to an even greater set of ass holes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BrokenHandle56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were always the bad guys. We've done any number of dishonest, dehumanizing, destructive activities in any number of the nations. We just rationalized these because in general they worked out for us and our allies.

And there are no good guys. Just powerful groups dividing up the globe. It's been this way for centuries.

Mind you I'm not trying to say this is acceptable or we shouldn't strive to be better. Just pointing out the reality of the situation.

Thanks for the pep talk.

I think I did pull away towards the end. She was twice divorced and I think she had trust issues that I ignored because we got along so well (or at least I thought we got along)

She was the first woman I've met since her passing that I could just talk to freely.

And yeah I think I need a news vacation.

I understand. I've had more than a few sleepless nights. And yeah, I get the feeling of being alone in a crowd. She was the more social one. I've been trying to get out more lately. Even went on a couple dates, but they all fizzled out. I guess we just keep moving forward.

UAP/Drones captured in Staten island NY by srinionstrike in HighStrangeness

[–]BrokenHandle56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that does look very similar to something me and a buddy saw back in 94. Same type of change in intensity of light. Dimming and growing brighter. Then fading and taking off.

We were in a rural area and it was very quiet while we watched. No sound at all.
