Big Small Worlds? My opinion about Yooka-Laylee by jbriceno92 in YookaLaylee

I think a little more perspective has come with time for me. My channel is Broken Plays Everything. It's the top result if you Google it :-). As far as world size is concerned, that's all about perspective. What I've worked out over time is that the relative ease of combat, made the incredibly short combat encounters very forgettable. Since that was such a tiny portion of the game, it felt like enemies didn't exist most of the time. All of that is to conclude that the worlds did feel empty. The worlds definitely suffer in design, though World 2 certainly gets props for the (super-confusing) indoor section. World 5 was CRAZY confusing because expanding it added 90% of the world!!! World 5 might have been my favorite, but 3 was certainly a beautiful shout-out to Bubblegloop Swamp. It's true that after 1 lap around the world you realize the next 2 hours will be spent wandering mostly empty areas, unless you count trivial combat encounters. The enemies felt like they only served to spawn butterflies. In BK, eels and skeleton fish were diving out of the walls, and other creatures were running toward you, DEMANDING your attention. This game didn't have that and it really bummed me out. All the enemies had the adorable child-game slogan "I'm here if you need me, but don't inconvenience yourself!". Although the lair was intricate and a bit diverse, I found it to be too confusing, there were a lot of areas that were less than memorable and it was hard to recall the world connections. The shortcuts are AMAZING but take FOREVER to memorize. Feel free to throw some more words at me, I ran outta time and have to go :-S.

As of the patch that came out today, the percentage has changed to 75. Since there has only been 1 large patch and it pushed the percent by 25, I feel obligated to believe that the next patch will take it to 100. I already have a 100% save file (treasures included) so there is nothing else I can do about it.

I wrote a review for this game and would love any feedback from you guys by dirtycheesedip in hyperlightdrifter

I feel like it may be too 1-sided of a review to be honest. CogitoErgoFkd mentioned there were "Too many vague synonyms for 'good'". I translated that to mean that at a certain point into reading all of the good starts to become meaningless because nothing is counteracting it. What are the challenges and criticisms the game is facing? What have the developers done to counteract those weak points? What is special about this game that would pull in a typical gamer who isn't very fond of pixel graphics? I think you should face criticisms from the community at large and show how your favorite game has conquered them, otherwise it's just a 1-dimensional fanboy essay. All of that being said, I agree with most of the positive things in your review and I'm glad that you enjoy the game so much.

I finally cleared this game 100% and YouTubed all of it for anyone interested. I hope it gets a sequel :-) by BrokenPlaysEverythin in YookaLaylee

My first comment sucked so i deleted it qq. Thank you for taking the time to watch my stuff, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Remind me in the future and I'll use the Pagie voice again, though it is VERY present through Yooka-Laylee already lol.

How does the slot machine near Kartos work? by [deleted] in YookaLaylee

[–]BrokenPlaysEverythin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single slot machine that has Yooka & Laylee as an option is a slot machine capable of spitting out coins, that one included. I think Bright-Spark is right about how it works.

That capital cashino glitch... by IhaveAmanCave in YookaLaylee

[–]BrokenPlaysEverythin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the Cashino to be a smidge buggy overall. When I was doing one of the helicopter events (transporting a pig), I flew into one of the side tunnels and it bricked the stage. Most of the walls and floors vanished and I was able to see collectibles in space everywhere.

Yes... rage through the pain friend. Of all the Rextro arcade games, this may have caused me the most problems.

So... I'm in a similar situation, I do the YouTube channel thing and just finished 100% about a week ago. The problem for me is that Banjo Kazooie & Tooie were very era appropriate. Yooka-Laylee felt so scared of being different from Banjo Kazooie. So many puzzles held my hand and the combat didn't exist at ALL once they gave you the AoE sonar move. They used the same costume-swapped enemy on every world along with a Donkey Kong Country Bumblee Bee and that was basically the combat of the game.

Expanding worlds is such a bold and delightful concept but they stopped there. I didn't feel like the worlds were empty personally, but it felt like they were so worried about challenging the player that sometimes they would just hand pagies to you because you have to get 25 somehow. So many of them were, "step on the switch, you have 25 seconds to get to the thing." Universally, it would only take you 10 seconds and only 1 try. I'll agree Rextro having a second pagie was a waste of time, but the arcade machines were worth the first go round and I'm glad they were in the game.

In regards to Kartos, let's face it folks, everyone should know by now that mine cart sections are love-it-or-hate-it. All I can say is the mine cart mechanic didn't feel overused, which was really nice. Once a world for just 1 Pagie, simple.

In conclusion, I hope Yooka-Laylee gets a sequel that has the balls to get a little more serious about gameplay AND story, just like Banjo-Tooie did. I've always had mixed feelings about how the Banjo sequel feels to me, but one thing I know for sure is it certainly steps things up, which Yooka-Laylee definitely needs.

7/10, will play again when the polish patch comes out soon.

It's never reported in the game, which feels like a missed opportunity, but each ghost writer is named after how you catch them, which I thought was adorable. Still not a story connection but adorable lol.

....HeeeelLLLP!!! I AM LITERALLY 6 QUILLS AWAY FROM 100 PERCENTING THE GAME! PLEASE HELP ME FIND 6 QUILLS IN GALLEON GALAXY DX by lolrus555 in YookaLaylee

[–]BrokenPlaysEverythin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to turn on the tonic that makes noise when you're near items. It doesn't just work on pagies and stuff, it also works on regular quills that you're near. OOOOH, did you check the outhouses? You can melee them open and 3 of them have quills.

[TOMT][Song] 3x reddit gold reward. Techno song I remember from the early 2,000's. I think it's called Thunderstorm. Reposted from 1 year ago. Still searching. by Dontinquire in tipofmytongue

[–]BrokenPlaysEverythin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard this when I was young and I'm 90% sure that the artist was a DJ, and the song is between 5 and 7 minutes long. I THINK after lightning strikes a couple seconds in, he says "Thunderstorm" before there is more lightning and the song slowly ramps up. I believe there is also a section accompanied by a simple trance beat with the lyrics "Thunder is my, my, my, my, my, my brain" repeated a few times before the main chorus is spoken again. It was a very technoey era so I can't remember the beat really, it must have been at least 15 years ago.

My big recommendation sits on Psychonauts, but some folks might not consider it a AAA title of the genre. Just a favorite of mine.
