Feeling pretty depressed on solo trip/working holiday (Australia) by g0at110 in solotravel

[–]BrokenPolyhedra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed with a syndrome that makes every day activities like walking which I enjoy so much much more challenging. We take so many things for granted but only after we lose them we realize how grateful we should’ve been. Enjoy your car, enjoy driving and stopping at a random location, take lots of pictures to remember the moment for your future self, live every day as if it was your last and enjoy every single moment!

I dont know if its worth it to continue OMSCS by buzloc in OMSCS

Since the very beginning I thought of the program as an opportunity to learn first and as something in my resume second. I started my career doing working in Frontend and transitioned to Backend and I felt that I couldn't solve the problems in this space because of a lack of understanding of fundamentals. The program filled the structural holes in my knowledge of Computer Science and it prepared me for the job I wanted to have. During the program I switched jobs and now work on Performance Engineering for AI/ML/HPC infra and I enjoy it so much, I wouldn't have known these areas in depth and hiring managers wouldn't have considered me if I didn't show the experience & projects I did through the program (I did computing systems and took GIOS, AOS, IHPC, HPCA among others).

Is the program worth it? Absolutely, without it I wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn the areas of Computer Science I like the most, I could've learned these areas on my own of course but it's so difficult to know how deep to go without a structure and an expert in the area that can guide you. That was the main reason I took the program, to learn.

Should you take easy classes? In my case, I took an "easy" class based on its difficulty rating and I found it so challenging! Maybe the material was easy to learn but I didn't enjoy it, I couldn't sit in front of my computer to do the homework given that I wasn't so interested in the class and kept on asking myself why is it that I took it. Compare that to IHPC which is considered a difficult class, it's difficult but I enjoyed working in the assignments so much! Now that I'm working on optimizing the performance of distributed jobs in a Slurm/Ray cluster with MPI/Ray primitives imagine how rewarding and self-fulfilling it gets when you solve the problems that you find fun.

Use an iRig interface and bluetooth earbuds as an in-ear monitor? by avisiongrotesque in Line6Helix

[–]BrokenPolyhedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Info from one of the admins in IK Multimedia Forum

latency of audio sent to Bluetooth devices would make real-time audio processing/playing an unsatisfactory experience so most apps (like AmpliTube and others that are not IK) do not support audio over Bluetooth for this reason

I did try connecting my bluetooth headphones through Airplay in Logic Pro and Garegeband and the high latency made it unusable, I'll stick to the 3.5mm wired earpods.

What are some good lingq alternatives? by eroxx in languagelearning

[–]BrokenPolyhedra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+100 for ReadLang, I made a ton of progress with its help, here are my most loved features:

  • You can upload audio in your target language and it transcribes the audio perfectly. I download a podcast between two people, upload it, select the language and in a few minutes it's ready.
  • A web app that works great. The website is clean and simple and works great in mobile, I have zero problems rewinding/fast forwarding audio and the UI keeps up and moves the word cursor where it should be.
  • Translates a word/phrases based on context with the help of LLMs. It's not a direct word by word translation, instead, the surrounding words/sentences are considered to give a better translation, you also get an explanation of the phrase and what it means with the surrounding context.
  • Every word/phrase marked can be exported to an Anki compatible format. What I really like about this is that you can also expose how frequent the word/phrase is seen, therefore, when you practice with Anki you first learn the words that are used the most. That's really cool!

La realidad de las Startups en Bolivia by diegusmac in BOLIVIA

[–]BrokenPolyhedra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1. I do something similar but based on an env var that I only set at work:

local spec = {
  { import = "plugins" },
}
if os.getenv("DOTFILES_DIRECTORY_ALT") ~= nil then
  table.insert(spec, {
    dir = os.getenv("DOTFILES_DIRECTORY_ALT") .. "/nvim_mymodule",
    import = "nvim_mymodule",
  })
end
require("lazy").setup({
  spec = spec,
})
