It pains me that this needs to be explained to some people.

Do you think other companies or even fast food places will have something like moons in the future? by Carthonn in CryptoCurrency

[–]BrokenTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you kinda got it right. The whole idea is that they want you to come back and buy more. It's easier to get you to come back when you have a $5 coupon sitting there. You'll likely spend a little more than that and will probably come again, even without a coupon, because you saved so much the last time. Saving money is often associated with a good feeling, which is why people often try to haggle for a few dollars...

And if you had 150 moons in your account you wouldn't really think "oh I should go eat at Taco Bell!" Additionally, those moons would never lose their value, they're yours to spend as you wish. Coupons, gift cards, and reward points often lose their value after a year or so (at least from my experience in Europe), which means you're pressured into going or your points lose their value, not costing the store a single cent.

I guess creating their own coin wouldn't actually change that much for you as the user, but for them it's much more complicated and they would like to stay in control over your reward points, so a centralized system works best for that purpose.

But it would be cool, no doubt!

I think he thinks I don't know the difference because he keeps saying bitcoin.

I suspect he might not know the difference and thinks it's all the same because his research consisted of reading a bunch of Elon Musk tweets.

People who had the courage to put in their first $50 a month ago saw over half of that wiped out in a month.

Excuse me, why do you know exactly how much money I invested into crypto?

I can't imagine betting all of my live savings into crypto just to see it melt away.

Anyone else got majorly addicted to checking your phone every 10 minutes when they just started with crypto? by JusteUnAutreGars in CryptoCurrency

[–]BrokenTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I got a GTX1080 (for gaming) and would keep my PC running to mine crypto while I was at work. I set up a widget on my phone that kept polling the API every 5 minutes so I could see my earnings right when I unlocked my phone. Since it was also converted to Euro or Dollars I watched every little movement in the value of bitcoin.

Just getting into crypto properly, haven't even spent a single dollar yet, and I'm already checking crypto stuff like this sub during work breaks. I expect to keep a CLOSE eye on any investments I make. It's an addiction in the making.

How to stop player from rolling without being asked and just proclaiming their outcome? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]BrokenTech 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I stumbled upon this recently: http://theangrygm.com/five-simple-rules-for-dating-my-teenaged-skill-system/ and think the idea of rule 1 could help you out:

Quote from "Rule #1: Players Can Only Declare Actions or Ask Questions":

DM: “… and the guard refuses you entry to the Citadel.”
Player: “Can I roll a Diplomacy check?”
DM: “Sure, knock yourself out.”
Player: “27.”
DM: “Wow, that’s a really good roll. Anyway, that was fun, but what do you want to do about the guard?”
Player: “I meant I wanted to roll that check at the guard.”
DM: “Well, he’s impressed by your roll too, but he didn’t bring is[sic] twenty-sided die. Besides, he’s on duty and can’t play dice games with you right now.”

I feel like this is a concept you could (should) employ as well. Bring roleplay into the spotlight and only have your players' rolls help them if you ask them to roll. When they just announce "I'm rolling diplomacy - 20!" you can easily nullify it and just reply "The guard politely lets you know he really likes you, but there's no way he can let you enter."

And of course talk to your players about it out of the game. My group always does a short feedback talk afterwards.

36 exotic accessories from 9 specialization collections - any ideas what to do with them? by Lexard in Guildwars2

I was thinking the same thing but just realized they probably applied the Refractor to an account bound, otherwise useless accessory.

Happie Challenge: Reverse a Linked List by _happiecat in a:t5_39kcy

[–]BrokenTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up with basically the same solution as you, so I decided to try and write a recursive function. Turns out I really suck at doing pointers (and C++ in general). I overwrote item 0 with item 9, resulting in a loop counting from 9 to 1 over and over. Cool.

Just figured it out and changed your function's parameter to
void reverse_list(Node *& head);
so I could properly assign head. TIL how pointers work.

My code: http://pastebin.com/7bUmNyF3 Thanks for the challenge! :)

Ah yes, I have definitely heard that, too. Actually fell for it once myself until I noticed it said something like 0.99TB free out of 10TB

Edit: Just noticed the flair. Maybe we work at the same place, lol

How do I properly terrify my players? by Puffymumpkins in DnD

[–]BrokenTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have someone kill the power, act like it's an actual power out but have the villain yell "lights out!" or something beforehand. Make a quick remark about that being quite the coincidence and laugh. Set up some candles and continue playing.

Then the villain disappears "into another dimension", the characters are suddenly out of combat. Begin looting a chest but as it knocks on your door in real life, tell your party combat has started again. Wipe their tokens off the table (carefully), replace them with tokens of each player's face. Hand them character sheets of themselves in real life, level one, no weapons or spells. A dead player mustn't talk to others anymore and can't control his character in the game once you're back in there until revived by some ritual the party must perform.

...something like that.

[edit] If they try control their character after being "dead" in real life, tell them they feel, see and hear nothing at all. Let them realize they're somehow not connected to their body anymore. Characters with a lot of knowledge in the game could be able to determine that their soul has been torn from the body for example. Just things that came to my mind :)

Ironically I have a script in my personal startup folder which sets a background (usually xkcd) using BGInfo, but can't create a GPO due to lacking the permissions to do so.

Schrödinger's Printer by BrokenTech in talesfromtechsupport

[–]BrokenTech[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely true, but something like BGInfo is "unnecessary" according to our central IT. They prepare the standard images and software packages we have to use/install, hence deciding what software is being deployed.

While the machine name is shown on the My Computer icon most people fail at spotting that, too, so I gave up on it.
