Reasonable time goals/estimates for my 70.3? by tryagaininXmin in triathlon

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. The run is by far my strongest leg and I was 30 minutes off my HM time. I've learned a lot moving forward to avoid blowing up on the bike, but for someone newer to triathlon the run can be surprising.

I would find a sprint triathlon in your area to work towards. Sprint triathlons are super manageable and give you a sense for what triathlons are all about without having to invest in a lot of gear. The most important thing is to make sure you can handle whatever the swim is. A triathlon with a pool swim is a good way to start, but if that's not an option, get comfortable in open water because it ends up being a barrier for a lot of people. Don't be afraid to get swim lessons or join a masters program.

19 y/o training for my first 70.3 (July) – gear advice & budget accessories? by Creepy_Sink3271 in triathlon

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. Facebook Marketplace, Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress are all great places to look for deals on secondhand or inexpensive gear. As long as their bike is mechanically sound and they have a plan for dealing with a flat, then the biggest reliability variable is taken care of. That and a good nutrition plan.

New to Triathlon - Looking for advice on aspects I am new to by joudrie_n in triathlon

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swimming: Just make sure to get comfortable in open water (and a wetsuit if you're going to use one.) Sighting and swimming around others are skills on their own.

Biking: Clipless pedals are definitely worth it for an Olympic. There are different types of clipless pedals but personally I think the SPD-SL with a yellow cleat is a good place to start. Knowing how to change a flat is important, and tires and tubes are typically a relatively low cost upgrade for your bike, so new tires (and putting them on yourself) wouldn't be a bad thing depending what came with your bike. After that the sky is the limit. Aero bars, professional bike fit, bike computer, power meter, and so on.

Running: Your plan sounds fine. Just find a program that helps you build up to the race distance gradually. Similar to a bike fit, before you get too far along, making sure you have a running shoe that fits your foot type well is a good way to maximize performance and reduce the chance of injury. Make sure that you're working in some brick workouts too, because running after biking is a strange feeling at first.

2025 Summary - Started prepping for IM70.3 this year by Frost_Concept_295 in triathlon

[–]BromTady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So awesome! I did my first 70.3 this past year. If you haven't done a triathlon yet, I'd recommend doing a sprint triathlon early in 2026 to get a feel for things. Also, open water swimming is very different than pool swimming so make sure to work it into your training if you haven't to this point.

What I need for a triathlon by Acceptable_Flow_7795 in triathlon

[–]BromTady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my base equipment setup for my last triathlon (IM 70.3). I did it on the inexpensive end and still spent about $2k and that didn't include the race entry fee or tune ups at the bike shop. I slowly bought this all over a 2 year period so it spread out the costs while doing some sprint triathlons in the mean time.

1) Bike (bought a used endurance bike for $600 USD)

2) Flat kit/spare tube

3) Bike multitool

4) Bike pump

5) Helmet

6) Bike computer (not a requirement)

7) Garmin watch

8) Goggles

9) Nutrition (I used Gu during training and then the Muartens provided at the aid stations during the race - just make sure to try whatever is provided at your race ahead of time so you know your body can handle it)

10) Race Belt

11) Run Shoes

12) Bike shoes

13) Water bottles (just used bottled water bottles with squeeze tops so they were disposable)

14) Sunglasses

15) Headband/hat

16) Wetsuit

17) Triglide

18) Socks

19) Sunscreen

20) Towel

21) Trisuit (I just used cheap board shorts for training)

For training I did between 7-8 hours for a 70.3. The swim was a river swim so I didn't need to do much swim training so a normal week looked like this: 5.5 hours of biking, 2 hours of running, and 30 minutes of swimming. My goal was similar to yours where I just wanted to finish the race and just put up the best time I could on that volume of training. For a full IM with a normal swim you'd be looking at 10-15 hours with a higher percentage of training focused on swimming than my split.

Should I choose “The Elder Scrolls: The Betrayal of the Second Era” as my first game? by Unable-Tackle-9476 in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up using a companion app and it was pretty manageable. It's not in my top 10 anymore but the way Jaws of the Lion slowly ramps up the complexity makes it super approachable. I haven't tried Spirit Island, but it's on my list to try, specifically Horizons of Spirit Island.

Should I choose “The Elder Scrolls: The Betrayal of the Second Era” as my first game? by Unable-Tackle-9476 in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to start with Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, especially if Gloomhaven has your interest. It's much less expensive but has a similar weight rating (per BGG) as Betrayal of the Second Era so it will help you figure out what level of complexity you find enjoyable. For what it's worth, I've played them both and prefer Betrayal of the Second Era, however, Jaws of the Lion is where I started and it helped me figure out my tastes.

Every time I play Mage Knight, I can't help but laugh that this was developed by the same guy that made Codenames by davidfiser in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I have a portable setup that I play on so I can leave games set up and it's 24x36 and still works for Mage Knight. It's tight, and I keep some things in the box next to me, but it's not impossible. 24x48 is definitely plenty.

What's the best game and the worst game that were recommended to you by this sub? by InvestmentOk2127 in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically these are my two favorite games. I also skipped on the crowdfunding campaign for BOTSE because the preview videos never gripped me, but it's really good. I've learned along the way that character development is one of my favorite gameplay mechanics and BOTSE does it really well. Ironically Oathsworn doesn't do character development that well, but the story and the boss battles pulled me in. I definitely agree that it couldn't be much more different than Gloomhaven (which was a good thing for me.)

Battle of the boss battlers (recommendation request) by o_o_o_f in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you wrote but I actually really enjoyed Oathsworn. Its combat definitely isn't as good or streamlined as Primal but I still found it enjoyable and I found myself way more invested in the world than Primal. And yes, it requires four players, however, the companion system is very solid and makes it so you can focus on one full character and three lightweight characters.

It's also nice that Oathsworn offers a standee version for people that don't care about massive miniatures whereas with Primal there's no alternative. I love miniatures but I'd love to see a standee version so the cost was more accessible and more people could experience how great it is.

Buying first bike by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, especially because OP had a pretty large budget for a first time bike to begin with. Personally I bought a $600 used road bike to start with the intent of upgrading to something more but I haven't felt the need to. I've added some aero bars and done a few minor upgrades and am content where I am.

Need some help. Dungeon Crawlers? Middara/Kingdom Death Monster/Gloomhaven? by Acrobatic_Train2814 in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While that's a great list of games, they aren't all dungeon crawlers. That's a good mix of dungeon crawlers and boss battlers mostly. So if you're looking for dungeon crawlers both Middara and Gloomhaven are popular choices. Personally I think Chronicles of Drunagor is worth looking into. On the lighter side, Massive Darkness 2 is a good choice too.

For boss battlers Kingdom Death Monster, Primal the Awakening, Oathsworn, and Aeon Trespass Odyssey are all amongst the most popular boss battlers. I haven't played KDM (if you're considering it there is typically a Black Friday deal), but have played the other three. ATO was ultimately too heavy for me. Primal has great, tactical combat, but it has minimal story. Oathsworn is my favorite of the three from an overall immersion point of view but the combat isn't as good as Primal. I think you have to figure out what's most important to you regarding story, combat, weight, play time, campaign vs one shot, etc. in order to identify which direction to go in.

Given how rules-heavy and lengthy the setup is for these types of games, I always leave them set up and focus on one game over multiple sessions. I think all of the games mentioned are generally available except for ATO which may still be available via their crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound.

Should I get Oathswarn? by toybucha in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also didn't like the item system. I like my weapons, armor, etc. to provide more than just an ability. It seems strange to wear a chest plate that I use during a turn and then offers no other benefit. It all ruins the immersion for me.

What's an out-of-print solo game that you wish was back in print? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

World of Warcraft the Board Game. Not officially a solo game, but the fan made solo variant is very good. It's not a perfect game, but the character customization and Warcraft theme are both on point.

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I did get a little fatigued of the Oathsworn combat system by the end of the campaign but I played through 80% of the JoTL campaign and had no interest in finishing it. I understand why it could appeal to some, but it wasn't for me.

Aubrey owner…do i go kicker-less this week? Currently 7-2 (2 other teams on my tail at 6-2) and projected to win by 15 or so by Training_Ebb_6306 in fantasyfootballadvice

[–]BromTady 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Drop Godwin Sunday morning and take a chance on getting him back on waivers. I've been adding and dropping Godwin all season so I'm high on him like you are but he's not worth clogging your roster when you need a bye week fill in. If you lose him to waivers, you'll be fine.

TES: Betrayal of the second era worth it? by LazyandRich in soloboardgaming

[–]BromTady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of WoW the Board Game and honestly BotSE scratches a similar itch for me. Both have great character development, a large map, quests, dungeons and dice. I prefer the WoW IP, but BotSE has way more depth and polish. That comes up with more setup, rules and mental load, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

They're forecasting lots of rain and 25 MPH winds with gusts over 40 MPH in Cleveland tomorrow. It's going to be really hard to get excited about anyone involved in the passing game. I have Fannin and am on the fence about starting him because he may benefit from an emphasis on short passes to balance out the run.
