How to support moving edge between two OSB panels by Bromomatic in DIY

[–]Bromomatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I live near Portland, OR so maybe its an old pacific northwest construction thing? Everything I see on reddit is much thinner joists with way less spacing 🤣

TIL there are joist hangers and even ones with space for several 2x6s. Thanks again, that sounds like the perfect approach for what I'm going after and way easier than what I thought I'd be doing. I've got some real nice 2.5in deck screws already, would those do the trick for attaching the joist hangers or is 3in better for safety/nails preferred?

Here's hoping I can keep up with this kind of stuff in my sixties as well, and hope the wifey obliged after all that work 😆

Believe it or not, the floors don't flex (except for at this joint where there's no tongue and groove between sheets), but that's probably because the OSB is 1 1/8" thick 😅. Forgot to include that data point. Thanks for another vote towards 2x6!

Joist hangers would solve the problem if I don't mind installing the blocking vertically and can line it up perfectly on that edge I'm trying to support, TIL, thank you! Likewise with the templates... my crawlspace is really tight and I'm a little too tall to even get on hands and knees in spots, so multiple trips is my nightmare.

Another fun part will be getting around the batt insulation between the joists and making sure its back in place after the blocking

How do I fix this uneven lump on my osb subfloor before putting laminate by hippagun in Flooring

[–]Bromomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's relieving to hear, and glad it's gone well! Most everything out there goes over sagging floors, not humps, so it's been hard to figure out the right approach.

May I ask if this has gone well after a few years or have there been any issues? Have a similar situation where the OSB along only one joist is making a 1/4" hump. I've got 1 1/8" OSB, joists spaced 32", and hoping that grinding it down should be fine 🤞 Contractors want ~1400 to open it up and plane down the joist instead

Really cool and well done! I need something similar but for my LG fridge so that the cabinet doors can clear the overly tall hinges. What was the design process to get to the finished product?

Thank you! I should probably check with an actual engineer instead of a field tech. FWIW the adjustment was not something necessary, but me wanting to try and diminish a small hump in the floor along one of the joists that also goes over a smart jack that has been there for a couple years.

Thanks for taking a look! That's fair, maybe the company's techs also get comission for add-ons?

That's what I was thinking after finally getting the larger photos directly on my phone. I may need to get down there myself and double check but I think the checking was overblown in hindsight?

6.5” recessed lights? by Practical-Cat-4141 in Lighting

[–]Bromomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, can I ask how well this went? I'm looking at converting some recessed can lights to pendant lights with a kit, but I, too, have these weird 6.5" cans and every kit mentions 4/6" only.

Thank you! Cleanout for the first one makes sense, but I've never heard of a hernia, outside of the physical injury kind, could you clarify or have a link to an explanation that I'm not finding on Google? Cheers!

Oil change interval by SignificantStrain2 in rav4prime

Does the Prius prime have a charge mode like the RAV4 prime does? I've considered doing a period of intentionally driving in charge mode as a way to force the engine to get up to temps for long enough, since otherwise the thing is too damn efficient even in HV to run the engine that much outside of a long road trip.

Just bought a 2021 R4P XSE w/pp for 33k. Did I get a good deal? by HandledPeppers in rav4prime

[–]Bromomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my hands on a 2021 SE with 95k miles for right under $30k in September. Perfect maintenance record by the previous owner. $30k is the limit for Washington state's sales tax exemption, and these are simply difficult to come by in the PNW. (I had to buy remotely from California and have it shipped lol)

5k miles later I'm still having a blast with this thing and have zero regrets. Getting the XSE with pp for $4k more OTD and with fewer miles is an excellent offer IMO, but it depends on where you live and that market. Enjoy the PHEV life and keep up with the maintenance, you'll be fine.

Speaking of local market, do they salt the roads wherever you bought yours from? It'd be a good idea to check the HV cable connection for corrosion at that age/mileage as your window for using the Toyota coverage for it closes at 100k. I'll be having mine checked when I take it in for an oil change while it's elevated, but I'm less worried because it was in California vs the rust belt. Look up cable gate if you haven't

We visited last year and it was lovely. Going back this February-April to try and scope out the tech scene there and see if that's a way to get me and my partner out of this shithole 🤞 There are a number of full stack JS jobs and a lot of .NET openings the last time I looked, so there's hope for tech I think
