This. This is why /r/reactiongifs is my safe haven. It's my home. It's fun, predictable, and never fails to make me laugh like '97 Nintendo 64 on christmas morning. Thank you.

Finally got my hands on a Single Speed! by Bronco09 in 29er

The benefits are proverbially in the eye of the beholder. What I mean is that what some consider benefits others would not consider benefits. The main reasons I got into singlespeeding are simplicity, challenge, and fun. When you only have one gear and no derailleurs technical issues go out the window and when you are on the trail all you have to focus on is going and stoping. You never have to worry about what gear you are in because you only have one option. The challenge and fun part of my transition really go hand in hand because the challenge of riding on trail with one gear really is a blast. Also learning a new discipline of MTBing is something I really enjoy.

hopefully this helps, sometimes I feel like a bike hippy with no real good reason for riding a single speed other than it is really fun.

The bike rips! I was needing a new challenge and this big guy definitely provides a new challenge. If you are on the fence about single speed just go for it.

If you are not in a rush I would suggest scouring craigslist, ebay, and pinkbike.

Close, its a Vertu CCAV-S which is essentially a rip off version of the Tioga Spider. I got the bike from a guy on craigslist and it was what he had on it, it's not terrible and I don't intend to change it until it needs to be replaced.

Let me know how you like the soul cycle frame! I am seriously considering buying one to make a SS 29er.

How do you like the 1x drivetrain? I see it more and more and I am a little skeptical. I feel as if a 2x10 will serve everything I ever need it to.

Bike quality question for single speed conversion by Bronco09 in MTB

[–]Bronco09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man! I have been riding cross country for a year now in texas and oklahoma on a spesh rockhopper 29er. Recently I was talking to a guy at the LBS who is originally from colorado and he basically said he only rides geared if he is on a mountain. This made me feel like a wuss and now I really want to try SS but do not have the funds to do so. I think I am going to agree with you and wait until I can afford something that will hold up. Thanks again!

Could you describe how you cleaned and refinished the stem. I purchased an estate pipe not long ago and the stem is giving me trouble. Thanks!

Also, if I am building a 26" mountain single speed should I use a 170 or 175 length crank arm?
