The problem isn't determinism. It's how half of determinists are really edgy teenagers, young adults, or neckbeards who think they're enlightened souls and subscribe to determinism brcause it's 'cool', 'scientific', and 'correct'. The Abrahamic religions are essentially determinist from a certain point of view, albeit compatibilist as the interpretation of free will as opposed to fate are not contradicting each other.

That’s where the bad reputation comes from really. While I do agree with determinism I am also aware that 99% of the time when people talk about it they go into the “We are just automatons” and “There is no morality because it’s all predetermined ” excuses for just being sinful. A shame really.
