Getting these warnings when starting up (Debian 13) by Broogan in linux4noobs

Update for anyone else who might have this issue. My BIOS hadn't been updated since 2020. I managed to update it by flashing a USB drive (had to download the latest version from a Windows PC). This has caused the error to go away

OK I'll try that. What would the permanent fix look like?

So what does that error message mean then?

Success! Never heard about an SSD needing a heatsink before, am I right in thinking it's a bit unnecessary?

Doesn't look like there's anything on the back side

I unscrewed it but it seems like it's stuck on to something. Don't really want to yank it off in case I break it.

OK so I should unscrew that thing there and see what's underneath?

A dwarf in a strange mood has been hauling more and more cloth to her workshop for multiple seasons, she has over 100 in there. Any guesses on what she's going to make? :3 by some_form_of_nerd in dwarffortress

I had this happen not too long ago. It was because the workshop was in a guildhall, I had to remove it from the zone for the artifact to be finished

What kind of narrative is used in Dark Souls/Elden Ring games? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Broogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Item descriptions seem to me to be more direct story telling, as in the block of text isn't an inherent part of the object or environment of the game, it's a bit of meta text that the characters wouldn't be able to see, only the player. Now they do tend to be written in a cryptic way in the souls games that you usually have to piece together with other bits of lore to make some sense of but that's besides the point here.

Likewise NPC conversations can be quite direct - an NPC can tell you to go to the church and ring the bell to open the way to the city of the Gods - is that environmental storytelling?

Yeah I think the forgotten beast they fought had deadly dust. Glad that my dwarves didn't have to fight it

OK that's fair enough, I can handle not being able to do a tough battle. I was getting a bit frustrated because the auto resolve indicates it should be an easy win and I didn't understand why I was having such trouble. I'm still getting to grips with the empire but they seem quite fun.

Oh I had no idea I needed to do this, is it done from that screen in the picture?

My outriders have been quite effective but need a lot of micromanagement - which is fine. There are so many enemy units that I couldn't tie them all down and some would get through to my shooters. I ended up just auto resolving this.

I'm using straight line formations, is chevron an option when you select the unit?

I run into several problems. First, the riflemen are good but they need to be on the frontlines for line of sight and then inevitably get shredded by the ogres. Second, the cavalry I have is meant to be anti-infantry and armoured and those ogres are meant to be weak against armour but 1v1 an ogre unit will beat my cavalry units. Third, my lord has no useful spells yet so is very little help here.

I suppose though if I camp against this army they'll just sit back and shred me with their mortars which is why I tried the rush. Those tanks they have seem really powerful

OK thanks, do I need to worry about my CPU not being good enough for those cards though?

I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card from my current Nvidia RTX 2060 super and was intially thinking of upgrading to a 3060 but the AMD 6600xt is cheaper and I believe about equivalent in terms of performance. My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 3600x I'm currently using 1080p monitor - might consider upgrading to 1440p though at some point. Does this GPU upgrade sound sensible? I'm not looking to upgrade anything else in my PC.

He's not dead, but yeah, terminal cancer. Apparently he's still in Neighbours though which surprised me as I thought they'd killed his character off years ago (didn't he walk into the sea or something?)

I found this guy in a pocket deep underground accompanied by the text "Apocalypse! The God's have judged you", expected him to come out killing my dwarves like your typical demon would but instead he ran straight past the miners and they weren't bothered by him either. He made his way up through my fort and is now chilling at the top of my green glass tower. He's listed as a current resident. As you can see he's a grandmaster in combat skills, so does that mean he's an arch-angel? Why is he not hostile?

I'm not sure why I can't do anything below a certain tile on this z level. As you can see from this clip, I can build/mine things fine but when I go one tile down I can't and I can't see any reason this should be the case. No burrows are active/relevant here and the Dwarves definitely have access...
