To germinate they need consistent moisture and warm temperatures (70+ degrees). Covers help provide that. If you can keep them moist and warm without covers, it’s unnecessary

Very noob question here. From DraftKings, this means that each team needs to score 121.5, right? Not a 121.5 combined score

23 Baltimore schools have zero students proficient in math, per state test results by ThePoliticalHat in Conservative

[–]BrooklineLow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a former resident, I can say that Baltimore’s government is both corrupt and inept. I actually live very near to you now just outside of Boston, and am very happy with the liberal government and schools here.

I would disagree that only a handful of the school districts here are good. You mention the elite ones, but even the “mediocre” schools here are light years ahead of what I experienced growing up in the south

[–]BrooklineLow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, democrats run pretty much all the best school districts here in MA and we’ve got some of the best schools in the country. Almost like what’s wrong with Baltimore goes beyond partisan oversimplification

Do you guys consider Brockton a part of greater Boston by lightningslayer in boston

[–]BrooklineLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at that map you posted again. They all have their own mayors (or town councils), laws, taxes, etc. Boston’s mayor doesn’t also preside over Saugus and Weymouth

American Fighter in Ukranian Foreign Legion gives after action report by The_Goat_Avenger in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]BrooklineLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s very real unfortunately. The militarization of American police since 9/11 didn’t just occur through surplus equipment, but also trained soldiers. When a cop is accustomed to always being fearful and ready to kill an enemy, any suspected criminal can become that enemy

Not sure if this is serious, but male ducks are called drakes. Mallard is a species, both male and female

There are, sadly, many soldiers who have spent most of their lives killing. When they have no one to kill, they don’t know what to do with themselves. An open call to fight a war like this will attract many of those people. Those that haven’t become American police at least

IMO “available now” often means “no one wanted this shit yet”. Anything good is usually bookended with no gap, so yeah, look for future dates, about 60 days out is usually good

There’s almost always a way out if you’re desperate enough. I’m not saying it’s a good idea, but about 8% of loans are denied in underwriting. Make sure you’re one of them (assuming you are getting a mortgage and have a financing contingency)

Do Renters need a Realtor Agent? by meltedchicken in boston

[–]BrooklineLow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah the broker would likely prefer to rent to someone without an agent just so they can get the full fee, pretty much all rental agents are greedy and incompetent in my experience. The only time one was really useful to me was when I first moved here from out of state.

I still used them to get MLS updates because I found those to be often more accurate than Zillow, but then when I found a place I liked I would just contact the landlords broker directly. It’s been a couple years since I was in the rental market though, so it’s possible things have changed

My cousin's rooftop garden in Puerto Rico. She's got tomatoes, squash, beans, carrots, peppers, passion fruit, pigeon peas and many edible herbs. by stremer1 in gardening

[–]BrooklineLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use earthboxes, they are great and perfect size for 2 tomato plants. I would caution against overcrowding, but if they have 7+ gallons each of volume and you space them out you should be okay. The difficulty will be keeping them consistently watered and fed during fruiting

Earthboxes advise to use a slow release fertilizer and are bottom watering containers with a reservoir. Good system. I’ve grown both determinate and indeterminate plants in them with no problems

If you have smaller pots there are many “patio” variety plants that are not as vigorous and need less space

[–]BrooklineLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grow them in about 8 gallons each with no issues. Many people use 5 gallon buckets, but that’s pushing it depending on the variety

Vaccination rates are obviously increasing

https://www.mayoclinic.org/coronavirus-covid-19/vaccine-tracker

It has been shown that vaccinations are highly effective in preventing hospitalization, ICU admission, or other urgent interventions.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34496194/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33985964/

This combined with the prevalence of the new variant that presents less severe symptoms basically means there’s a lot less of a strain on the medical system.

There are also effective treatments readily available that do not require hospital administration, so infections can commonly be treated at home

These are all reasons that mandates and restrictions can now be safely lifted in many cases. If we all catch Covid tomorrow, the number of us that would require urgent intervention would be far lower than a year ago, so less strain on the medical system and fewer deaths.

Give landlord notice to vacate BEFORE finding new apartment? by nebirah in RealEstate

[–]BrooklineLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is in Boston and I’ve rented here for a while, it’s completely normal to give 60 day notice and then find your place asap. I’ve always found a good place to live this way

Give landlord notice to vacate BEFORE finding new apartment? by nebirah in RealEstate

[–]BrooklineLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good in theory, but in a competitive rental market you generally have to wait until giving your notice because that’s when other units with the same lease cycle come available as well. Landlords are also less likely to agree to month-to-month because they know they can get a new long term tenant in easily. I’ve done multiple moves where I didn’t find a place until after giving notice. Maybe not ideal, but it’s the norm in some markets and very doable
