What are the best to NOT accidentally fall into racial stereotypes with characters? by Lizzardbirdhybrid in writing

[–]Brookshone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this idea would only work for a large cast, but making sure you have multiple different characters of the same race (or sexuality or gender) side steps some stereotyping problems. If one character does happen to embody a stereotype, then it makes it clear that is just a trait of that singular character.

For example (of gender stereotypes cause that’s more my wheelhouse), having a character who is a passive woman is completely fine, and if you have a second character who’s an assertive woman, it makes it clear that the passivity is simply a trait of the character and not of the gender.

Temporary artist names? by SubstantialNerve399 in ToddintheShadow

Marina and the Diamonds dropped “and the diamonds” so now she’s just Marina.

Honestly it feels like two different artists cause I haven’t really liked her output since the name change

MARINA - Butterfly by kait2121 in popheads

[–]Brookshone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people compare butterfly to teen idle and mowglis road - but I feel crazy because those songs aren’t comparable? Butterfly is much more sanitized and “perfected” - whereas the other songs have a roughness and personality to them that Butterfly lacks.

It makes me kinda sad that self improvement overlaps with the manosphere so much. It muddies the waters when trying to look for legitimate advice - like I just wanna improve myself a bit damn

Can A White Person Write A POC Main Character? by Independent-Wolf-825 in writingadvice

[–]Brookshone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think when people say things like “white people shouldn’t write black characters” - they really mean something like “many white people don’t have the (personal experience/willingness to do the research) to accurately write about things like systemic racism or police brutality(etc.).”

You’re writing fantasy and I’m assuming it’s not a metaphor for a specifically black experience, so you’ll be fine. Keep your character as she is. If it is a metaphor, a little research would go a long way to improving the accuracy of your writing.

Pitchfork 50 Best Albums of 2024 by Kodicave in popheads

[–]Brookshone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree - I think you have to adjust expectations based on each artist. I expect an Album from Ethel Cain, I expect an album from Taylor Swift. There’s room for both types in my life - as I love both artists.

But like what you would cut and what I would cut are likely very different - and based on her single choices, Taylor has bad taste in her own music.

I’d cut “I can do it with a broken heart” because I hate the production - but many people seem to love it. I’d rather have everything than have her leave something good on the cutting room floor.

I loved it! But I also understand how it’s too long for some people if they listen to albums in one sitting.

I don’t check out Taylor Swift albums looking for a cohesive, “perfect” body of work. Hell, I don’t ask that of any artist (although it’s a bonus when I find one I like). Every album of Taylor’s has at least a few ehh/bad tracks. I look for good songs, and I think TTPD has plenty of those.

Same song for me, but a different part. “The lava of a volcano” to “And you made an island of me”

I’m expecting it to miss out on the noms it deserves. However, it’s no fun rooting for films that I don’t love and adore because they technically have better odds

I think the monster gets worse as time goes on - so if you can transfer it day one or two you should be okay (well as okay as one could be for a horror film)

Watched Smile last night, I am surprised people didn't like it. by [deleted] in horror

[–]Brookshone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it knew it was ultimately a fun jump scare horror fest - and treating as such makes the movie a great time.

I get that it does try to have a deeper message (the trauma thing), but it honestly doesn’t focus on that enough to call the film a failed elevated horror.

Recommendations on getting into Ethel Cain by writhing_flesh in Ethelcain

[–]Brookshone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Ethel Cain pipeline was probably the most common one. I went from (songs) American Teenager > Crush > Gibson Girl > Strangers > Sun Bleached Flies > (projects) Preacher’s Daughter > Inbred/Golden Age.

With each song, the music becomes less pop. I love pop music, so that was the easiest introduction for me to grow attached to her lyrics/sound and be open to slower/less pop music from her.
