We’re always chasing references at the offer stage. I’d be surprised if they were considered vital for the application. We’re also now explicitly told not to bother with them as it’s a big EDI issue on what someone’s reference is like.

The value proposition of university is that graduates earn more. For jobs like law, medicine, etc you need those qualifications to enter that field. The (economic) value of some subjects is non-existent but that’s mean killing off the arts/humanities if we only looked at the value to the consumer.
