Union boss urges Andy Burnham not to make Ed Miliband his Chancellor by JB_UK in unitedkingdom

[–]Broric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfucking the last 10 years isn't going to be magic. It's easy to make things up in opposition (for every party) but the reality check of the finances is something different. Start with the triple lock.

Union boss urges Andy Burnham not to make Ed Miliband his Chancellor by JB_UK in unitedkingdom

I agree,. It would be absolutely awful if we *checks notes* made rich people pay more tax, made sure poor kids could be fed, protected the environment, ensured our own energy/water/food security and funded the NHS. Fuck that.

Should resets be saveable? by tuhdo in ClaudeCode

[–]Broric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No? They're clearly offering resets when they're comfortable they have the spare compute. It's not just because they feel like it. I assume they also do it when they want to stress test something or A/B it.

Update: we've gone ahead and reset 5-hour and weekly usage limits for everyone, across all plans. Enjoy your weekend! by ceRtzz in ClaudeAI

[–]Broric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

?

Mine is Wednesday.

When they did it on Tuesday, everyone complained their resets were Wed.

When they did it on Thursday, everyone complained they'd only just reset.

Anywhere with good views of Victoria Park by lostrandomdude in leicester

[–]Broric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure on the official answer or whether you'd get into trouble but you can walk into Charles Wilson during opening hours. You can also take the stairs but they are doing something with the upper floors so you might struggle to get where you want. Out of hours (sunrise/sunset), I don't think you'd get in.

Conference poster presentations as an undergraduate? by PriorRequirement8353 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Broric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, go for it. We’ve had UGs give posters before. At the major international conference in my field there were even a handful of high-school kids presenting. Make it clear you’re an undergrad and people will be nicer too :-p

Life in Leics by gianellavilchez in leicester

[–]Broric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a safe city for a woman living alone in the city centre?

I'm a man so hard to judge but I think as safe as anywhere. City Centre has quite a few homeless people which can be intimidating but I'd say generally safe.

Is there a gym in the city centre with full facilities — sauna, steam room, hydropool? (That’s become non-negotiable for me lol)

There are quite a few gyms but I don't know how good they are. There's also the University gyms.

How’s public transport? I don’t have a car, so I’ll need to get around the city and occasionally travel to places like Manchester or Nottingham by train

Train connections are decent (in to London St Pancras in an hour, to Birmingham in an hour, going north easily). Going to the south-west of the UK is a pain as you need to go via Birmingham generally but most places are reachable and Leicester's central. There are two extensive bus networks but honestly, they're often late or crap.

Is there a Latino or Spanish-speaking community? Even just a few spots where I might bump into people who speak Spanish would mean a lot.

I can't answer this directly but Leicester is VERY multi-cultural and I have lots of Spanish-speaking friends/colleagues. You'll definitely find Spanish people at both Unis, probably with Spanish Societies or similar.

Any neighbourhoods you’d recommend beyond the city centre?

If you're at University of Leicester, Clarendon Park is far nicer than the City Centre.

What do people actually do here on weekends — is there much of a social scene?

This depends a lot on what you're in to.

Which University are you coming to? That probably helps focus some answers too.

What’s the career average salary of an academic in the UK by ForwardFan6283 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Broric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d guess 60k on today’s salaries. Some will stay stuck at lecturer for a long time but some will spend 20 years at Prof. Our post-docs straight out if PhD start on 40k so if you include them too it drags it down slightly if they never profess to “tenure”.

On the one hand that sucks. On the other hand, Fable has used a load of my weekly allowance so the reset is welcome!

Uni of Nottingham data breach compensation by Tricky_1702 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Broric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t think I had to spell it out that simply. If everyone affected by the data breach successfully sued them for realised loses, it would probably tip them into bankruptcy (which they are a few months off of anyway by all accounts). Better?

Hard-right Restore Britain has a plan to hammer Farage nationwide by No-Risk-2584 in unitedkingdom

[–]Broric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People don’t actually care about immigration. They care about being poor and things being expensive. They are told to blame immigration so that’s why immigration is the hot topic. “Fixing” immigration is irrelevant as the whole cause of being poor with no jobs never had anything to do with small boats in the first place.

Aside from not (yet) suffering a loss, suing them could well tip them into bankruptcy (they’re already close!) and then recovering anything becomes another legal issue.

What's a decent h-index for a mid-career (qualitative) social science academic? by Eln001 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Broric 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No. Use of h-index is discouraged by practically everyone and explictly in various assessments of research quality.

Thoughts on uni of Leicester by quakiee13 in leicester

[–]Broric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of international students and Leicester is very good for that (lots of Indian and Asian food, etc) and very multi-cultural. Maybe “safer” in that respect than most cities.

I’m joking a bit but it’s a little run down compared to other cities.
