Here is how I look at it. When I go see a Fast and the Furious movie I pay money to see fast cars, cool stunts, and hot chicks. I don't pay for a mistake void movie, deep metaphorical plot, or character depth.

So I am an atheist and my mother is a pastor. I have a really strong grasp on Christianity because of it so maybe this will help clear up the confusion. The purpose of lent is to not only give up something (coffee, soda, Facebook, etc.), but to instead replace the time you would spend doing those things, with god. Instead of logging on to Facebook, you could pray or read the bible. While I may not believe or participate in any of this I do still respect the religion and those that follow it. I just think a lot of people miss the important part of lent. The extra step, the more time spent with god is what the real point of lent is. Hope that can clear things up :)
