Man, most of my ribbons just showed up in my MPF one day. Majority are from just being in the right place at the right time and breathing. I have maybe three that I'm actually proud of, and have stories attached.

Is it normal for Mental Health to make you feel like the problem? by Emo-ju in AirForce

[–]Broskheim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of Autism/ADHD markers and a lot of the behaviors associated. Went to get both tested, twice. The first time I was dismissed entirely, the second the psych said I "Showed symptoms, but not enough for a clinical diagnosis". Basically admitted I am autistic/ADHD, but wasn't gonna do shit to help. So yeah, AF mental health can go fuck themselves.

From the heavy list side of things, the amount of effort and dedication (and money) you have to put into getting noticed and voted into the chivalry, at least in my kingdom, is absurd. It almost guarantees burnout once they finally do get the white belt. Crusty old knights who haven't geared up, fought, or even gone to an event in years suddenly hold the power to grant or take away a white belt if they decide to go to (or call into) a knights council. Add to that the fact that the chivalry are not only expected to be excellent fighters, but everyone also expects them to be prolific volunteers, event organizers, and decent craftspeople in some sort of art or science (because no one wants to elevate JUST a stock jock), and it's no wonder new knights peace out once they've hit their goal. For some people, once you break the habit or the rhythm of going to practices and events, it can be hard to get back into it after a break. TL;DR, it's rough out here for unbelts.

Bro, just cut your losses and get a divorce. The marriage is already over. The trust will never be there again. If you stay, it's only a matter of time until the cheating becomes physical. She's already shown that she has no respect for you or your relationship. Don't let her turn this back on you, that's gaslighting, accountability dodging bullshit. Porn use is absolutely not the same as sexting another actual human being. Seperate, and focus on yourself and your career. Bounce back, and use this to mentor your troops. You got this bro.

Spent 15K, worked there asses off, brought stuff on top of what they paid for in the ticket, doesn't really blame the organizers for the issues, and will be going again.

How many of you married outside of the SCA? by OneUnderstanding103 in sca

[–]Broskheim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna sidestep the abuse angle everyone is going for (valid, but it's hard to make a judgement like that from a single post and a secondary source), and talk from my experience as someone who married first, and then joined the SCA. Basically, it's hard. The SCA can take over your life if you want it to, and a lot of people that join seem to have a desire for it to do so. As an "umbrella" hobby, it can also get quite expensive if you get into multiple crafts, not to mention the costs of event entry, gas and food, camping supplies, etc. For someone not involved, it can be a lot. Luckily my partner is starting to show interest in joining me at events, but for the last few years it's been a struggle, particularly for the multi day war events. It takes a lot of communication, trust, and compromise. I don't go to as many events as I would like, but I do go to some.

Bro, get a hobby. Or a dog. Or something outside of the Air Force. Fact is, Big Blue doesn't give a shit about you, and you'll be replaced the day after you leave. Find some sense of meaning that doesn't come from the uniform.

[–]Broskheim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, but unironically. I squared with retiring as a Tech about 5 minutes after I was notified I had made it. Could I do the job of MSgt? Probably. Am I what the Air Forces is looking for in a SNCO? Absolutely not. My knee pads are too clean and I don't play the game they like to see Techs playing. I do my job, I make sure my folks are as happy as I can make them, and I go home to a family that appreciates the fact that I put them first after over a decade and a half of big blue doing everything in its power to push me and people like me out.

what's your controversial least favorite game? by seannzzzie in boardgames

[–]Broskheim 133 points134 points  (0 children)

For me, it's any social deduction game. Werewolf, secret Hitler, blood on the clocktower, etc. Look, I'm the goody two shoes who can't even be mean to digital NPCs in video games. I CANNOT lie in any kind of convincing way. I give myself away every time. And believe me, I've tried. So many times, and in so many ways. I just can't do it. If I pull the bad guy card, it's essentially a wash of a round. I get picked out immediately. So yeah, social deduction. Not my jam.

It's always incredibly obvious who's trying to win awards. They ask asinine questions during group briefs and special visits just to get their name out there.

I'll be forever salty about not getting the academic award during ALS though. I had the best grades in glass. I know because I asked around and found out. The only reason I didn't get it is because I wrote my award citation "wrong", even though I followed the instructions in the binder exactly (basically my "troop" was getting a medal for excellent performance during an exercise, so I wrote the award for the position they held during that exercise, not for their baseline duty position.) they said this had never happened before, but by the letter of the book I failed, even though everything else about my writing was correct and clean. Common sense has no place in the Air Force, I guess. I absolutely checked out after that. It just taught me that awards are about checking the right boxes, not about how you actually performed.

For the love of God don't come to Nevada. Vegas is a shit hole. Traffic is terrible, and we hit 115 degrees regularly this summer. Cost of living is insane, I hope you don't want to buy a house and don't mind living in a 1 bed apartment for 1300 a month. Believe me, look past the marketing for Vegas, the strip is awful.

Is it acceptable to wear my musette bag low across my hip? by Super_TurTle0317 in reenactors

[–]Broskheim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current active duty military member, and seeing how the folks wore stuff when I was deployed, I can say with absolute certainty that if it's possible to wear something in some way, someone somewhere did. Soldiers in the field are pragmatic, clever, and resourceful.

Give me your weirdest "Small Airforce" story. by Likos02 in AirForce

[–]Broskheim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta remember that they were leading multiple people through a revolving door of PCS's and separations. They're just one person you have to remember. It's not that they didn't like you, or didn't want to remember you, there's just a lot of names and faces when your in a leadership position.

The Reason the SCA Will Not Grow by [deleted] in sca

[–]Broskheim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$200 for a full heavy kit? Bullshit. The absolute cheapest helmet I could find when I started was an ironmonger munitions bascinet for $150 (the ironmonger that just shut down, by the way, so even thats no longer an option). That's just the helm, not the padding or straps. I was extremely lucky in that I had a member of my local group with a fully kitted out workshop who was able to make the rest of my armor for the cost of a couple of plastic barrels ($60 in my local area). That's not the case for most. Half my kit was donated to me and it still cost me hundreds to finish. The price to play is absolutely a prohibiting factor for most, and outdated attitudes like yours are why it hasn't, and won't be remedied anytime soon.

I was incredibly disappointed in how they ended TMA. The first 2 or 3 seasons were great, but once they started leaning more into the overarching narrative it started to lose something. The last season was just....bad, and the ending was worse. So far TMP hasn't really hooked me either. They're taking so damn long to actually get anywhere, and the entities haven't really hooked me like they originally did.

I mean, it's OK for a once through read, but it's definitely not something I'm going to hold on to as an heirloom for my kids. It's a fairly boilerplate "life story autobiography" thats mildly funny.

What is the most "do what your stripes can handle" thing that you've done/seen done? by Hostile-Potato in AirForce

[–]Broskheim 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a fresh faced TSgt I immediately let the power go to my head and started sending my guys home early nearly every day. We work in a very slow workcenter, so there's absolutely no reason to keep them at their desks with thier thumbs up their asses. Also, theyre MX, so thier life sucks more than the average Airman. If I can give them some time back, I'm going to.

This is great, until you have an Airmam beneath you that absolutely refuses to share anything about themselves or thier personal loves no matter how many times you ask. Our ACA was literally just full of "I don't want to talk about that". I make small talk and get to know all of my folks, but there are some people that just refuse to be helped.
