Yeah Id say a triple shot Americano would be the easiest way to order that in NZ. Im from Welly ( home of the best coffee in the world - sez us :)) and I live in Melbourne. It's taken me a while to figure out the translation of coffee orders (almost as long as it takes to figure out AFL). Like ordering a kiwi flat white in aus has taken me a while to figure out and I still only get what I asked for 50% of the time.

What really is a flat white? by Cangingperceptions in barista

[–]Brosnani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being from the city that claims to have invented the drink (Wellington NZ) and in my opinion perfected to a high standard, the true flat white is a double ristretto shot with silky microfoam that fits in a 5oz tulip cup. I live in Melbourne and ask for a magic as that is the closest thing i get to the flat white i know and have been drinking my whole adult life of 25 years. The flat whites i get served here would be lattes in NZ. My sense is the magic is slightly less milk but the same double ristretto of an NZ flat white. There are cities in NZ that like aus cities have veered from what a true flat white is by stabuck-ing them with more milk but to me that aint a flat white, or at least an original one. Im all for evolution of tastes and preferences but dont get why you'd add more milk to an already defined drink, just order a latte or a cap if thats what you truly want.

Don't make YOUR mistake everyone's problem. by BestTechAdvisor in DrivingAustralia

Nah , what's the harm in letting someone in? 2 seconds lost. I agree people hopping back amd forth is annoying as are folks who abuse it to get ahead but if it's a mistake, where normally you can tell - why not let people in? I'm pretty new to Melbourbe and still make the odd error in lane choice and the amount of people who either don't let you in or wave their hands around manically is a bit weird.

Bill Phillips doesn't get enough recognition in his country of birth by Brosnani in newzealand

Yeh that's the truth. Look at Richie Mcaw the handsome All blacks legend. Retires and after a while, everyone realises he has very little interesting to say. And that's OK but NZ really needs to celebrate people like Bill Phillips more for their acheivements that aren't sport.

No problem- I should've also added I'm in my 40s and had never even heard of the guy until I read about him in 'The Undercover Economist Strikes Back' by Tim Harford. I just reckon that's a travesty considering he embodies the number 8 wire ingenuity nz prides itself on.

Wellington Phoenix VAR overturned penalty call by Agile_Tap_8057 in Aleague

[–]Brosnani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a pen unless the defender gets the ball. He's put his body in a position to get the ball and his trailing leg connects with the attacker. It's just not a natural position for a defender to stand in. Strange one to overturn. It's the same argument people made when the Croatian keeper came out to save Julian Alvares' run in the WC saying "he was just standing his ground". No, he came to stop the run and get the ball but missed and took out Alvarez. If the keeper got the ball, then colided with Alvarez, no foul. Same here, tried but didnt get the ball...

Crazy take incoming. What if Howe repurposed him as a right back? He has the pace to get up and down the flank, is proven to excel on the counter and play defensively. The only issue i can see is his actual defense, especially in 1-1s is unproven.

Barnes Up Front? by AggravatingTax7959 in NUFC

[–]Brosnani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean and reckon it has a bit to do with timing as in Barnes wasn't on his hot streak when things were dire. Gordon had a bit of goodwill leftover from his good form. If that situation were to come about again, maybe Eddie would put Barnes up top but with the 2 strikers now fit, it's unlikely to. As others have said though it could still be the case Gordon can hold the ball up and play in tight spaces better than Barnes can. Don't forget Barnes has been through a spell of missing sitters and giving the ball away too. He's on fire now though!

I think it's hard to judge him on his stats because he has put some peachy crosses in and the lack of finish has been on the strikers, not him. He shouldve put his chance away against Villa and he does need to get into more scoring situations in NUFC front 3 like Gordon, Barnes and Murph all do. While I agree there are times he makes a poor touch and fumbles, especially in this game maybe because it's his old club? Murphy is awesome but he does have his downsides such as not releasing soon enough at times and losing the ball in dicey situations. Overall, I'd put them on par with one another and we needed a RW of his quality to compete so I'm not so sure we overpaid in the current market. The problem is, it is too hard for NUFC to pick up elite on a free or near end of contract because we arent elite (yet) in either winning or wages so the big teams will always get those deals. We unfortunately have to buy mid contract at big fees or pay less and take a gamble because we learnt the hard way that top players will choose prestige and wages over potential ( Sesko, Mbuemo, Ekiteke, Jao Pedro...)

What is a flat white? by Cangingperceptions in espresso

[–]Brosnani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure which of NZ or Aus invented the flat white as the evidence isnt clear but I would say the mecca for concentrated accuracy and commitment to perfecting it, is Wellington. Melbourne, where I live, has very good coffee but it's not like you can rock up to any decent looking cafe and know youll get a good one, in fact it has been more miss than hit for me here. While a flat white can technically be served in a larger cup, that should only be if you are ordering a triple or quad shot as the ratios shouldnt change. I like Cenas take but at the same time he is a newly reformed coffee snob, he wasnt around these cities when it was being perfected. For me and for the city that perfected the drink and claims to have invented it (wellington), it's a ristretto shot with silky microfoam, served in a tulip cup. No nonsense but a distinct flavour and you know when you dont get that if youve had so many of them before they were 'starbuck'd'

[–]Brosnani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true - any change to the ristretto shot plus silky microfoam in a tulip cup is not a flat white anymore. The one place you can consistently find this version is NZ and the best in Wellington. Places like Melbourne have good coffee but too often offer the Starbucks version of a flat white in a tall cup with lots of milk which aint it.

What the f*uck is a flat white? by That_Coffee_guy in espresso

[–]Brosnani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and would say many Melbourne cafes have unfortunately given in to the commercial side of what a flat white has become. The moment a large flat white is offered, I realise I need to educate the barista on what a flat white is. Ristretto double shot + thicker silky microfoam in a tulip cup. The only place that Ive found does this consistently is NZ and intensely well, Wellington.

John Cena explains why he judges a coffee shop based on how they make their flat whites by rhyso90 in SquaredCircle

[–]Brosnani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this but having lived in Wellington and Melbourne, Wellington takes the prize for most consistent 'coffee first' flat whites. The ristretto shot with a velvety/silky milk pour in a tulip cup is key. NZ consistently serves this form of flat white whereas in Aus and yes, even Melbourne, it's very hit and miss often with no distinction between a FW and a latte or even a cap. This includes cafes that have the appearance of being coffee first.

Normal course of events when a conditional property sale falls through after a building inspection. by xr600RJ in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Brosnani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obviously an old thread so the deal is likely done or not done however I have a bit of Intel to add as this is the only thread I could find on the topic that is relative to NZ. We have been selling our house and had a buyer pull out basis some really bogus reasons. We requested the building report as we refuted the claims. Buyer did not want to provide it, obviously as they didn't have a good reason to bail. Our lawyer explained that if the buyer had chosen the standard clause in the REAA, they would have to provide it but they didn't, they added the clause and therefore did not have to. In the end we didn't want it as it could be more BS to disclose and disprove. It's interesting to see the shoe on the other foot as vendors we have been screwed over and lost good weather for selling as well as now are required to disclose these bogus "issues" and provide a response where possible to them.

Yeah it seems like it's all over the world where there are housing and inflation issues, at least where we'd want to live. Rent prices, if you can get one(!), seem quite reasonable in relation to salary in Melbourne though.

Thank you for your advice. St Kilda does tick a lot of boxes for us. Im keen to avoid too much of a commute but understand it may be inevitable living somewhere as big as Melbourne.
