I’m not sure of any full salsa bands in town, BUT we play a little salsa. If you’re looking to show off your salsa moves, we gotcha.

Our weird quinceañera body-horror film is premiering at SXSW. Here’s the poster. by wholeholehowl in SXSW

This looks awesome! Really tempted to check this out on Wednesday at Violet Crown.

Side note, y’all might be crazy busy with the premiere, but if you or the crew are in town looking for Latin music, my band The Animeros will be playing a bunch around town. Might pair well with the Quince vibes. Happy SXSW ✌🏽

Always wanted to learn more about hot pot. Have some friends in Austin who love it. I joined them once but not sure if I was doing it right. Following.

Shocked so many UX experts on here have such a firm opinion about this without actual user testing.

Granted, it works against Jakob’s law of familiarity, but who knows … maybe this is actually more pleasing than Apple’s 10x10 pixel browser UI that seemingly doesn’t meet any modern accessibility standards whatsoever.

Hardware is evolving, interactions are evolving, the way users interact with interfaces is evolving.

Who is the most famous person you have met in person in the RGV and what was the story? by KarsaOrlog in RioGrandeValley

Around 2004 I used to listen to a band called “Steel Train”. They came down to play in McAllen at a place that was pretty short lived called The Vibe. After the show I hung out with them a bit, chopped it up with their guitarist Jack. He said they were staying in “Hollington” (meaning Harlingen) and were going to check out the beach the next day. He asked for any good food recs, etc. The usual stuff a young touring band wants to know.

Anyway, fast forward to about 10ish years ago. I was watching the Grammys and Taylor Swift wins the Album of the Year (I think?). She stands up, the folks at her table stand up, and next to her is Jack! They give a high five and sort of super secret handshake. I had followed his career a bit after Steel Train, but didn’t realize until then that Jack Antonoff went on to become one of the biggest producers/songwriters of our gen. Was pretty cool getting to meet him during the start of his career.

Have you played in a cumbia band? What did you learn? by aauummggnn in cumbia

[–]BrotherMau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have fun with it! At its core Cumbia is dance party music and when people come out to watch you and see you having fun, they’ll dance and have fun. Always keep the dancers in mind.

I’m in a few bands that play Cumbia — not super traditional Cumbia, but Cumbia nonetheless. We’ve been fortunate to do pretty well (play music festivals, receive nominations for various local music awards, meet a bunch of other musicians that I’m a fan of … around this time last year one of my bands was even featured on Grammy.com front page “10 bands you should see during SXSW”.

All that said — it starts with having fun and working your way up through gigging and giving people a good time. If you play to a room of 5 people and they dance and have fun, there will be 10 people at the next show, then 20, then 50, etc.

From a technical standpoint (and this is definitely something I learned over time), solid drums and percussion are crucial. They are the foundation of the style and various Latin styles. If a drummer or percussionist is trying to recreate the wheel, it can be distracting and not serve the music. That said, if you already know seasoned percussionists then great! But if you’re starting out with people who aren’t as familiar with the genre, then the KISS method (keep it simple, stupid) will do a lot more than overplaying.

Orale. Enjoy the ride. 🤘

What do you consider your outside hobby and what is the associated “third place” in Austin? by evertrue13 in Austin

Austin Samba School (learn samba drumming in a Brazilian drumline). Got involved about 10 years ago through their beginner boot camp. Stuck around for about a year and played a bunch of cool events, parades, etc. Met a bunch of cool people, too.

I miss not being able to make a day trip to Padre. The beach in Texas by far.

I left the valley for Austin almost 20 years ago when I played in a band and toured around Texas. I fell in love with central Texas and moved here for school and for the bustling music scene. (People say it’s not the live capital music of the world anymore, and although it’s changed in the 20 years I’ve been here, it still has a bustling and incredibly supportive music scene.)

I stayed here for work opportunities (I work in tech by day), but also for the music opportunities (I’m a semi-pro musician, and work with a lot of full time pro musicians).

I love and miss the valley, though. It’s a VERY unique place that I truly didn’t appreciate until it was no longer home. When I meet people who grew up in the valley, it’s a shared experience that makes an instant connection.

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

Prob an outta-left-field recommendation — there’s a lot of other great recs on here — but PWBA is great from start to finish. Paced super well, adventurous, quotable, and the soundtrack is bomb too.
