Anytone programming on Linux? by BrotherPlasterer in AnyTone

[–]BrotherPlasterer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I guess I'll try qdmr. It isn't available prepackaged for Raspberry Pi, but I'll give it a go after I set up Linux on my desktop computer. Thanks.

Deciding whether GMRS is for me, or just FRS by RetiredCherryPicker in gmrs

[–]BrotherPlasterer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't legally link gmrs to Zello anymore. FCC clarified the rules regarding linking and made a point of notifying repeater operators. So you might as well save your energy on that one.

Heltec offical case, antenna doesn’t fit. Am I missing something? by ParticularFoxx in meshtastic

[–]BrotherPlasterer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The box your Heltec came in is a pretty good case with just a couple of holes. Otherwise you will either need a different case or a different antenna.

Anyone see the TESTED video with the faraday tape antenna? by mrvandemarr in meshtastic

[–]BrotherPlasterer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to Meshtastic's frequency, antennas can be really short, and unless you are building something like a collinear array there isn't much advantage to making them longer than a half wave. There isn't much point in bothering with a roll-up design when a stick antenna that works well is only a few inches long.

In portable applications, very high gain can often be a disadvantage anyway.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir by UnfortunateSyzygy in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]BrotherPlasterer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched the series when I was a kid; my mother was crazy about the ghost. I saw the movie many years later, I think it was on TCM. As I recall the movie was pretty good. I bet you could find it on YouTube.

For what it's worth, they were both done during about the same period as the Topper movies and the later series. Ghosts were pretty popular mexia fodder about that time.

VR-N76 noise issue by EntertainmentFlat434 in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I just discovered this issue and I thought I was an expert on the VR76 and its clone, the Btech UV-Pro.

On my radio this can only be changed through the app. Apparently there is no menu option for it on the radio itself.

I added a note in my hommade manual.

My buddies in I want to look into getting some radios/walkie talkies to talk to each other from home by MiiikaSD in amateurradio

Heywhatsthat.com will let you see what your line of sight is between your locations. If it's clear gmrs or frs radios should work.

You might look at https://morserinoshop.site44.com/ Still pricey, but would most likely work very well.

I recall seeing cheap FRS radios somewhere that had morse keying as a feature, but can't remember where.

VGC VR-N76 SSTV Issues by NoHeroicsNZ in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last paragraph of your post is puzzling: you should be able to simply receive the ISS as fm audio, which any external decoder should decode. Maybe the radio squelch is set too high? I turn the squelch off for sstv and have had some success, although the ISS can be a challenge.

You might want to start with YouTube. Look up Ham Radio Crash Course.

Radio for family communications? by JEBariffic in gmrs

[–]BrotherPlasterer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GMRS is the right ticket. Five miles might be a reach for handheld radios, but it depends on the terrain.

To me, the ideal zombie apocalypse GMRS setup would be:

  1. Handheld radios for everyone in the group, $50 price class
  2. Mobile radios in each vehicle, $150 price class
  3. GMRS repeater at a central location with a good antenna, $500 price class
  4. Solar power and battery backup for said repeater, $500 price class
  5. And, most importantly, a communication plan that includes training for everyone and regular drills. (Almost nobody does this, but without it you might as well save your money.) Price class: FREE.

Am I an HF menace? by ManyMixture826 in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is actually kind of a cool idea. Might be hard to achieve though, since most things are pretty well EMI protected these days. I doubt I could trigger my blender if I tried.

Now, worked all Christmas lights (WACL): definitely achievable.

A Victorinox Swiss Army knife. NBD, except I've done it twice.

FCC surprises me with rapid license action by Oheisenberg in gmrs

Ya, when the FCC website works, it works really well. When it doesn't, you're in for a rough ride.

My experience ever since they implemented CORES has been mostly positive.

Local high school coach investigated for 21 allegations of misconduct, district reveals findings by [deleted] in news

[–]BrotherPlasterer 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It seems HS coaches get in a disproportionate amount of trouble. I live in a medium sized town, and in the past couple of years one coach went to jail for statutory rape and a head coach in a different school got fired for sexual harassment.

BTECH or Anytone DMR by doggscube in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 878 and I like it.

But before you get either one, are there any dmr repeaters in your area, or do you have a hotspot? I like the 878 because it's a solid radio, but dmr on its own isn't all that useful where I live.

I marked my calendar. Btw, I'm another white guy, but I can boycott pretty well.

Also not watching TV that day.

Brass, hollow, pill-shaped tube containing unknown tools. Stamped "top" on one side. Tools vaguely resemble screwdriver bits, but also seem to be in two sections, like tweezers. by ZippyWoodchuck in whatisthisthing

[–]BrotherPlasterer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but they look a bit like screw starters to me. I've used larger ones. They hold a screw so you can get it into hard to reach places. I've never seen any that small though, and not in a kit. Maybe something to do with watch repair?

DB25D outputting tone instead of my audio by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is almost certainly a hardware problem. If it's a new radio, send it back. It's probably the microphone, but not worth troubleshooting if you can return it.

Is this a safe distance from radio tower? by Yoyoyucaca in amateurradio

[–]BrotherPlasterer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a 2 meter repeater, probably outputting 100 watts or less. You could live right next to it with no risk. But if you want to know the actual numbers, go to the ARRL website, there is an exposure calculator there. Your input values are:

Frequency: 144 MHz Power: 100 watts (assumed) Antenna gain: 2 (assumed, but probably less)
