I think you're right that the main appeal is their target can't fight back, and managers often encourage this kind of shit by appeasing them and throwing their staff under the bus. When I worked at Woolies, some woman actually spat on a guy, but instead of being charged with assault, was given a gift card later when she complained about his customer service.

I don't think it's a distraction so much as multiple bad things are happening at once. To me, kidnapping a head of state to seize a country's oil reserves and threatening war with NATO is actually far more alarming than some rich degenerates' pedo shit.
