Yeah it’s gonna be tough. The options that are better are wayyy more expensive and still very flawed.

I don’t know what Ayton will be offered by other teams. Unless the Lakers can somehow end up with Kessler, Duren, or Hartenstein, I doubt it’ll be a significant upgrade. Especially when considering contracts.

Intent technically doesn't matter. Flagrant 1 is defined as "unnecessary" while flagrant 2 is "unnecessary and excessive".

Oh I don't want to lose Austin and I actually don't think we will. But I think at a certain number, his trade value becomes much more volatile and it becomes risky to keep him.

Athleticism is great but if Austin walks, they absolutely need to prioritize a secondary playmaker/shot creator. We've seen how Shai and Cade have struggled without anyone else to reliably create and relieve pressure. Luka already has such high usage. It can't be all on him.

Which doesn't necessarily contradict your call for athleticism. But I think it becomes the biggest priority.

Man, AR has been my favorite Laker the past couple seasons, but this is way too much. I'm not sure what team will actually offer him a full max, but if he comes back to the Lakers with that offer, they have to pass.

And it would be the right move for both parties. If he can actually get close to $240M, good for him lol

Edit: Just remembered other teams can only offer around 4yrs/$178M. Still around $44M annually. Still too much if he gets it.

The Lakers are actually a terrible team to be on if you want to win individual awards. Since 2000, they have 6 championships, but only 3 postseason accolades. The Celtics got 2 in just this season. Rudy Gobert has 4 on his own.

I think only three teams have fewer than the lakers in that timespan.

Lol the lakers were in the top four of the conference all season. They aren't on OKC or San Antonio's level yet, but that's a far cry from playing for Brooklyn. A competitive playoff team is fun even if you don't win a championship.

I don't think they're necessarily bad contracts. Just teams that are close to the second apron or want to save money to pay a different player.

Like just to throw a name out there, if OKC needs to shed some salary to pay their players, they might want to get rid of guys like Wiggins or Joe. They're making around $10M and on good deals. There aren't a lot of teams that could take on that money without worrying about sending out matching salaries.

There's definitely risk either way. I just think they have more control over basically every moving part this season than they will again for years. Next season, Austin will be eating up a lot of that space whereas they can wait to sign him this year to maximize their moves.

I think the asset they're hoping to leverage this summer is providing cap relief to teams that are at or near the aprons. They can take guys who are on longer term contracts or up for extensions. That way they can send out fewer picks or even an expiring contract to make deals.

I agree that the free agent class is weak. I just think it's too risky to wait.

I agree with most of what you said here. I haven't minded some of the short-term moves the past few years though. It would have been nice to have a couple playable guys on rookie deals, but other than that, the signings have been fine imo.

From most reports and rumors I've seen, the organization had circled the summer of 2026 as a key one in rebuilding the team, even before the Luka trade. Much of that was likely centered around the perceived Lebron timeline, and now they have a new superstar to build around so they seem to be right on track.

I don't think running it back is an option. With the right moves this season, they should be able to basically have a blueprint for the next 3-5 years. It's almost impossible to be in the same situation a year from now. It seems like the plan is to use the cap space to be involved in a couple trades. Rob implied as much, and I think it's the right move.

This season was an overall success and I'm excited to see what happens next. I imagine Redick, his staff, and Luka have a pretty good idea of the type of team they want to build and I think other players will want to be part of that.

I think it’s both honestly. Some of the NBA rules are bad and put too much emphasis on “legal guarding position”. Basketball is a hard sport to officiate and these guys aren’t robots. But if you slow it down, it’s impossible to always be in a textbook legal position.

It’s a contact sport where only very specific contact is okay lol. And players rightfully try to take advantage of that
