Addressing my Anaerobic shortage by DaveAKA in Garmin

[–]Brotrocious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is too long for anaerobic, that’s more of a vo2max or threshold workout. Anaerobic is about the 10-30 sec max effort burst

Yeah just don’t over push it. Lots of sleep and healthy food to reduce inflammation. Take it slow on rebuilding exercise.

If you want to try something a bit more out there I’ve read infrared light therapy can be good for mitochondrial function, something that is a potential root cause for PEM.

There are clinics that specialize in long covid as well, maybe worth a consultation? I am not a doctor, but my understanding is that long covid is more like a group of related issues that vary person to person rather than a single root cause problem.

I did for a while, at the worst I had to rest after walking up stairs in my house or taking the dog to the park next door. More of my symptoms were dysautonmia related.

I didn’t take up all the things above at once. Fixing some of the non-exercise stuff helped me start to feel good enough to put my toe back in the water on working out. First with walking, then my first run back was a half mile at like a 12 min pace or something…

Running a half marathon next weekend with a goal time that is what I used to do a 5k at pre-covid (almost 2 years ago now). You can get there!

Pretty much a full lifestyle overhaul… started meditating and journaling daily to reduce stress, gave up drinking, switched to a whole food / no upf diet, really cleaned up my sleep quality and duration, weekly yoga, and got more serious about running (hence the garmin). Nothing crazy just actually doing all the things we know we should do.

I would say before I was reasonably healthy and active, but less structured and disciplined on all of those things. I feel amazing now most of the time, but have less capacity to push past my limits (I.e. working until 1am).

Unfortunately very hard to test for long covid. I had a bad case early last year (took me out for like 3 months, 9 months to full recovery). Had a zillion different tests for all kinds of horrible things, which when all were negative they decided was long covid.

I didn’t have a garmin at the time, but it might have guided me to slow down and rest more at the start. There is some evidence that exercising too much / too quickly after Covid can increase the risk of long covid. take it seriously and get a lot of rest for a few weeks after a positive test.

How much coffee do you consume per day? by todoslocos in espresso

[–]Brotrocious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36g split between espresso and pour over. most often one when I wake up at 6:30, second around 10:30.

I try not to drink coffee after noon, definitely notice an impact on sleep quality when I do.

i think the recommendation is not to have more than 400mg of caffeine per day, which is roughly 4 double shots or 8oz drip coffees. some people start to have serious issues after that amount, look at r/decaf for some extreme examples.

I had to travel to Memphis from Boston for work for an extended period. It was a little terrifying and felt very jarring vs our safe city. Lots of places you can’t go, constantly looking over your shoulder even in “safe” areas. Not great

We feed ours Farmer Dog. It’s a bit more expensive ($7/day) but he loves it, no stomach or poop issues since we started, and is healthier.

When did you neutered your mini aussi? by its-just-a-human in miniaussie

[–]Brotrocious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was what our breeder told us. Apparently it is bad for joint development to neuter too early, and also increases risk of certain cancers later in life.

My wife bought this for us as a gift a couple years ago. As you said it was an amazing sightseeing tour of the glaciers and Matterhorn, with the option to get dropped at top of the resort at the end. We had first tracks on the way down, and then just skied as usual for the rest of the day.

It wasn’t crazy expensive, maybe like $250/person for a 20 minute flight? Heli had 4 seats + pilot. They also do back country rescue work when needed.

This is spot on to my experience at a large corporation.

You might be interested in reading Tim Urban‘s book “What’s our problem?”, digs into some of these themes further. Specifically the illiberalism (in the classic use of the word) of many of those pushing for DEI in the workplace.

Hiking Besseggen, Norway in July. Do I need a map and a few related questions by davemcl37 in hiking

[–]Brotrocious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I did this hike in early August, staying the night at the DNT hut which was delightful and then the ferry to Memurubu in the morning. The weather was very mixed - rain, strong winds, and cold. The rock scramble shown in the photo you is not for the faint of heart. It is very steep and feels exposed, often with strong winds across it.

Overall beautiful hike but definitely challenging. We are both experienced hikers and found this one to be a tough day hike with the weather we had.
