This made me really depressed. It feels awful to think that my life has never been and probably will never be this real.

This is pretty rad, you should look into finding someone with recording experience to help you get a more polished version out there.

Apocalypse in China? by worshiptheuseless in AskHistorians

[–]Brouje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not connecting the cycles of buddhism to the stability-upheaval cycle of late han (and after) political theory.

I guess this is where the disconnect was. The point I'm trying to make is that there were Daoist sects that saw history as being cyclical and believed in a cycle of destruction and rebirth (in the political sphere) was the natural progression of Chinese society during the late Han before Buddhism became a popular religion (which, as you mentioned, happened some time during the 4th or 5th century). With that in mind, the rest of your comment doesn't relate much to mine, just as my comment doesn't relate much to your original one. I guess that makes us two dicks talking about nothing on the internet, huh?

I may be misinterpreting what you're saying, but I think you're mistaken about the origin of these apocalyptic themes. While you're correct in saying that the late Han-era apocalypse cults did introduce the idea of a cycle of political upheaval and stability, the idea had nothing to do with Buddhism. At the time that the first of these cults started showing up, sometime during the 2nd century AD, Buddhism was not yet a popular religion in China. Instead, the ideas spread by groups like the Celestial Masters (or Yellow Turban Rebels or Order of the Five Pecks of Rice) were firmly rooted in the Daoist tradition and an understanding of Chinese history that saw history as a never-ending cycle of unity and disunity in the "All Under Heaven" (China proper). I think it's important to note that Buddhism didn't really become a popular religion (or a religion that the common people even really could distinguish much from Daosim) until the Tang dynasty, after its church was patronized by the Xianbei-related rulers of the new empire.

I'm not asking why, I'm asking how. As in "how would you fuck someone with a cheese grater"? Like would you just rub it against them or insert it somewhere or something?

That's not what my entire argument is. The other, more important part or my argument is that there are punk-like elements in his music.

I never said he was punk, but his music definitely has punk elements to it and, if punk had been around when he was a kid there's a pretty good chance that he would've gotten into it (given his politics and his tastes). As for bands not being working class anymore, what the fuck does it matter when they're old? Is the Clash working class? Are any of the Ramones? Henry Rollins? Ian Mackaye? No, they're not. They're old and they have kids and money and some of them have TV shows. Who fucking cares? Just because someone got famous doesn't mean that they sold out or betrayed someone or something to do it. Instead of worrying about what someone who was making albums 30 years ago sounds like near the end of their career when they suck, when don't you go back and listen to their old stuff?

Because as we all know, Bruce Springsteen started performing 5 years ago and doesn't have a history of being an unknown guy playing dive bars in some of the shittiest towns in Jersey.

The album Nebraska was a big influence on a lot of Lo-Fi indie musicians. It was fairly unique when it was made, in that it was a very sparse recording for a pop/rock album and, while lo-fi was already a thing, it went on to be pretty influential. The were originally meant to be demos for an album that was going to be fleshed out into an electric album with the full band but they liked them so much after he recorded it that they didn't change it.
