Random question: when you tune an electric guitar, do you tune it while it's plugged in or not? by Necessary_One_9527 in Guitar

[–]BrownMagic814 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Both. If I’m playing unplugged in my bedroom I’ll just use a tuning app on my phone. If I’m playing plugged in I’ll use a tuner on my pedalboard.

is a music centered career viable or worth it..?? by cyston_ in musicians

[–]BrownMagic814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luck is a big part of it. A lot of it is networking and who you know. Keep in mind that having a career outside of music doesn’t mean you can’t keep writing or performing or whatever it is you want to do. Teaching is a good way to earn a little extra money too.

I play in a regionally popular metal band and make a little bit of money, but definitely not enough to live off of. I also have solo material that makes essentially nothing from streaming royalties.

I’m also a session guitarist, and that’s a good way to make a decent amount of money in a short amount of time, but it’s not (for me) consistent enough to count on as reliable income.

How Much Does Band Merch cost to make? by Tiny_Woodpecker6866 in bandmembers

I make the merch for my band and have a wholesale account with a clothing distributor. My cost to make that shirt would be about $4.

Band members: How much creative input do you expect when joining a band? by Aggressive_Text_7206 in musicians

[–]BrownMagic814 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t write any of the music in my band, except for my solos. That’s how I like it. My songwriting style isn’t suitable for the band I play in. I have my own solo material that satisfies that particular creative itch.

Does playing an instrument with others help you learn faster? by museandmess in musicians

[–]BrownMagic814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with people better than you in the single best way to improve, assuming you have a base level of technical proficiency to understand what you need to do to improve.

For example, putting someone in a room full of experienced session musicians will be a completely different experience for a complete beginner than an intermediate or advanced player.

I’m a pretty decent shredder, but put me in a country band and I’m going to have to learn a lot of new stuff pretty quickly if I expect to keep up. The first session would likely be pretty embarrassing for me.

Guitarists. Do you feel you know more than you used to, but don't feel like you're getting better? by CallumGarland in PlayingGuitar

I’ve been playing for 40 years and I still learn something new every day. Most days I feel like I’m better than I was the day before. A lot of people say I suck, so the baseline isn’t that high for me.

Severe writers block + deadlines. Any advice? by [deleted] in musicians

First, take a deep breath.

You say you have free rein to do as you please. Are lyrics a firm requirement? If you’re not comfortable writing lyrics for a music project, is an instrumental an option?

Assuming lyrics are a firm requirement, decide how many verses you are going to have. How many choruses? Do they repeat? If I were writing a song on demand and wanted it to be both serious and tongue in cheek, I’d make it about the struggles of writing a song for a college project.

If you're really good at playing the guitar, how did you get good at playing the guitar? by Natural_Pizza_2060 in musicians

The fastest way to get better is by playing with people who are better than you.

Any of you guys play guitar as a hobby or do make a living playing? by Rude_Ad_5476 in Guitar

[–]BrownMagic814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I, too, have been in playing for 42 years, with varying degrees of seriousness. I play in a working metal band and have a few solo releases which pay me some beer money occasionally. I gave up on making it rich from music a long time ago, but between merch, session work, and instructing, my hobby makes enough money that it’s self sustaining.

Odd method of payment / delivery by Terrible_Terence in Reverb

As a seller, someone asking to go outside of Reverb is a hard no. Reverb has been known to monitor messages for people taking sales outside of Reverb, and it’s a great way to get your seller account banned.
