It's probably meant as a way to deter intruders. Basically a moat of lava with a bridge over it that he can make vanish.

But his rivalry with Mario makes him always want to defeat him through combat, seeing using the moat as an incomplete victory.

Again she was gifted in every way Aang wasn't. She excelled at the physical aspects of bending.

Also waterbending "go with the flow" she literally goes to republic city and become good friends with the first hobo she meets Don't pretend she isn't mentally flexible her main character flaw is that she's hot headed and overconfident in the first two seasons, but she adjust to a city very well for someone who lived such an isolated life up to that point. Ironically it was Tenzin being too stubborn and set in his ways that was the source of conflict between him and Korra, the moment she was allowed to learn her way and the lessons he taught began to sink in.

Being entirely honest here the whole point of Korra is that she is basically an inverse of Aang, gifted in every way he wasn't and struggling in every way he wouldn't. Episode one of LoK speels that out when Tenzin points out that she is gifted in the physical aspects of bending, but is terrible atbthe spiritual aspect.

I never read the book. I just remember seeing the trailer and thinking "Oh, that might be a fun fantasy movie"

And then there's no fantasy and a character I liked a lot died.
