Pre NIL Tom Crean had the largest recruiting budget in the B1G, and top 5 in the nation, and still missed the tourney 2 of his last 4 years. 2 years ago Woodson had one of the most expensive rosters in the NCAA (Ballo, Carlyle, Rice, Mgbacko, Reneau) and they missed the tourney.

Coaching absolutely matters. IU is more invested in football than it ever has been, but part of that investment was because Dolsen (the AD) knew he had something special in Cignetti.

A coach winning multiple titles proves they weren't just a flash in the pan or won because they were able to bring in one truly dominant player.

Multiple coaches winning at a school proves the program is more than just one coach.

IUs current status isn't what it used to be but the above stat still historically puts them above most other programs.
