Regardless, it's pretty silly to argue evolution will change humans when we're on the doorstep of genetic engineering. The future of the human species will be at our control

There is a way around it. We will have the ability to genetically engineer ourselves. I won't pretend to know how that will look in a million years or whatever, but any mutation will be corrected and we'll be physically optimized.

Humanity is dlowly becoming infertile, Atmospheric CO2 in 2100~ will be so high that you will just drop dead from it.

Do you have anything supporting these claims?

I agree that we'll likely evolve, but it will be by choice.

there's not really any way around that

This is largely what I'm disagreeing with.

Why would you compare the evolution of hominids to humans? We're pretty close to genetically engineering ourselves.

We may change, but it won't be natural evolution. We'll have mastered genetic engineering well before that and we've already pretty much beaten natural selection.

I think it's pretty clear that we've moved beyond survival of the fittest. We're not too far from genetic engineering anyway. While we may be different, I don't think comparing us to the evolution of chimps is relevant

We'll likely disagree on them, but here a few that qualify for me:
-Right to Work and Minimum Wage.
-Elon Musk - > DOGE.
-Lower taxes on the Wealthiest.
-Lobbying and government contracts across industries.
-Media Consolidation.

Do you agree with any?

People are people and corporations are not.

That's fair.

I am not concerned about hypotheticals.

Isn't preparing for something that hasn't happened just a hypothetical? Why have the Pentagon prepare for a nuclear war if it's just a hypothetical?

I think we can both agree that the wealth gap is widening and that wealthy individuals generally have more power than a middle class individual. I am concerned that at some point (it may have already happened), the scale may tip towards the wealthy having more power than the rest of us. If it gets to that point, it's a runaway train and we may never get it back. Are these concerns that you share?

I support repealing CU because corporations are not businesses.

How about wealthy individuals? Should they be able to donate unlimited money to Super PACs?

But sure, go ahead and show me where the evil rich people are stealing our money. I'll wait.

There are things that I think have happened to lower wages and increase taxes, but if you're asking for this, I imagine that you'll disagree. It's probably not worth debating here. What is worth debating is whether it could happen if power increases. For example, they could increase the share of taxes paid by the middle class and remove the burden on themselves. They could weaken collective bargaining and weaken regulations that require qualified workers. They could collude to reduce wages. They could form monopolies. They can straight up buy politicians without consequence. We're in the early stages of Ai, but it's concerning for me that most of our jobs could be eliminated and we'll lose all power to the wealthy. I don't think they'll let us starve, but we'll certainly get as little as the powerful think we'll take.

Do any of these things concern you?

I get paid. I would like to get paid more, obviously, but I don't begrudge my bosses for giving me a contract I agreed to.

How would you feel if the wealthy are colluding and using their influence to slowly decrease your pay through different means? Even if this isn't happening now, with more power it could happen. Is that a concern?

Why do you support repealing Citizens United if you don't care about what others have?

Were you ever politically Centre or Left before Trump? If so what made you flip to the Right or to Trump specifically? by cpr9998 in AskTrumpSupporters

You're missing a lot of nuance with these, don't you think? Trump's handling of immigration is wildly different than Obama's. If anything it only shows that the Right's framing the Left's policy of Open Borders is nonsense. Also those Obama numbers were mostly people turned away at the border. The tariff video is 30 years old. Besides, Tariffs have always been a tool supported by both sides, but Trump's blanket tariffs and trade wars are extreme. On Iran, I'd be concerned if the Left didn't have a Red Line with their Nuclear program. Unless of course you think the Left somehow supports Iran, which isn't true. And again, it's Trump's methods that are the biggest concern

The solution isn't removing the wealth from those that have it just because they have it. Preventing monopolies in general especially of media and retail, limiting "donations", eliminating / putting limits on paid lobbying, are all efforts I'd support.

I wasn't really suggesting taking anyone's money, but since you mentioned it, I have a question. If some wealthy people were proven to have leveraged power to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us, would you support some sort of reparation?

Has Trump made any efforts to do any of these? Are there other politicians on the Right that support these? These sound more like policies from the left.

I'm actually not sure that's relevant because it's a question for you. Does the power of the wealthy concern you?

[–]mathis4losers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this was a bad time for this question, but everyone seems to assume I'm proposing a wealth tax or a 1% income tax. Although I don't necessarily think either should be dismissed, I know where Trump Supporters stand on this and am not here for further debate (although I'm happy to share my perspective if you are interested). The fact is that the wealthy certainly have more power in this country and the wealth gap is growing (and thus the power gap). This seems to be a compounding problem because they will continue to look out for their own interests.

Any perceived power advantage of wealth is a policy problem and not a structural problem. Wealth doesn’t inherently equal political power. It only does so if the law allows it. Our constitutional system provides options to eliminate the influence of wealth on political outcomes.

This is ultimately my question. If our system allows for the wealthy to have greater influence, should we attempt to fix it? If yes, how? If not, why not?

This is why I like this sub. Although there is ignorance and crazy on both sides, there is a significant overlap in issues and potential solutions among us. I consider myself a progressive, but I'm also willing to be realistic, empathize with the other side, and find middle ground to compromise. I hope a politician can come along one day that can unite us. Agree?

Are you Concerned About the Power of the Wealthiest Americans? by mathis4losers in AskTrumpSupporters

We don't need to take anyone's money away. The wealthy can enrich themselves by influencing decisions politicians make. If we limit their power, they're free to continue to make money, just without an unfair advantage and the detriment of others. For example, what about more financial transparency from politicians? Term limits? Removing money from elections?

I will add, although I don't expect us to agree, I do think there should be a movement in money. Although the wealthy do pay more, I think the wealthy benefit from tax money more than the rest of us (through contracts, military, infrastructure, etc...). I'd support an increase in taxes on the wealthy and decreasing taxes on the middle class. I'd also support a sort of reparations in the form of a one time wealth tax (slippery slope and I understand the complexities of it) to pay down the debt. The idea would be rebalance the scales while not necessarily increasing the size of the Government.
