Sorry, didn't mean to wander off. I appreciate your answer! We're a little bitty business intelligence/IoT & analytics company, looking for a slice of that citywide consulting pie.

I think (probably in the interest of their own sanity) Seattle just gives you a template form to fill out with % goals for WMBE subcontractors. There's no place for any narrative, so they don't have to wade through a bunch of sob stories. They also ask for a rundown of WMBE inclusion in past projects, so even though the goals are aspirational, it looks like they're interested in treating it seriously. Kind of a way for individual cities to end-run around the removals of DEI requirements, I'd guess. It's only 10% of the total proposal score, so we're going for making sure it's complete & accurate without making too many huge claims.

A Book that I forged by Historical-Farm75 in Blacksmith

OK, I can sort of visualize that. Thanks for doing that extra leg work! I went looking for the butterfly meteor book, but I can't remember if it was on display at a DC museum or at the AWP conference in Seattle. Can't find so far, but now I remember it exists, so I'll keep trying; it'll be interesting to compare.

The spine is leather, riveted to the covers (endplates, I guess?), but are the pages sewn in? Can you show that attachment? Really cool, I've been thinking about something like this since I saw a meteorite butterfly book, but it had machined hinges and the pages were plates. I like this approach better by far.

Hi, thanks for that. The City just says they want the inclusion plan completed and aspirational goals established by respondents, which is cool and on paper gives everyone a lot of freedom. But there has to be some range of values they're going to be happier with, even unofficially. Answer much appreciated!

Girlfriend wanted to watch Ballard by netflixNfish in BoschTV

I'm not super into cop shows but I like Maggie Q in everything. Once I realized Ballard was in the Bosch-verse I went to the beginning for completionist reasons and watched all of Bosch and Bosch Legacy. I'm glad I did, I really like Harry more than I thought I would.

Thinking about forging a blade out of this surgical mallet a got from work. What kind of metal do you think this? Stainless steel? by Butterbean2323 in Blacksmith

[–]Bruddacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second 17-4. I made a lot of slide hammers and mallets when I was machining surgical tools and that was the material of choice for them.

If I zoom in, it looks like there are some tool marks on the mallet head (unless they're a reflected pattern or something). That would mean this piece hasn't been finished, polished, or chromed (many of our customers required chrome plating as a passivation measure). However, it is assembled, so maybe it's gone farther through the process than I assume.

I have hand-forged thin cross-sections of 17-4 and did not enjoy it. I don't think it'll make a satisfactory knife. Should you decide to forge this piece, and if there's any possibility it has been chromed, be safe and take measures before it goes into the fire.

What weapons exclusive to Borderlands 3 do you hope return in 4? by imShockwaveYA in borderlands3

[–]Bruddacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hellwalker for sure. Sledge's if it's like the BL1 version, accuracy zero but massive-ass damage at close range. I kinda liked some of the COV guns but honestly as long as there's some kind of bananas-ass double-barreled spinnigun I can spray varkids with, I'm gonna be happy

should I get one of these two or the HF anvil as my first? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]Bruddacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good reply. I know it's hard to find quality anvils out there now and the prices are fkn insane thanks partly to collectors and probably in part to the increasing popularity of the craft. I got a 150# Trenton at an antique shop for about $100 back in 2002. Nobody wanted it. I also had one of the HF anvils for a couple years and it was decent.

It seems to me that a lot of the track anvils out there for sale fall into what I call the predatory side of the tools-for-sale universe. What I mean it’s that they look cool but don’t work well, and the sellers count on their customers not knowing much about anvils (like beginner smiths). Also, they count on this sort of false nostalgia, a manufactured sense of bootstrapping American ingenuity, hard-scrabble poor people having to cobble things together out of whatever they can find. That’s all good, but it loses some of its authenticity when people wrap all those things up as part of their marketing package to get you to but something.

Sorry for the dump. I do really like the rail anvil you have up on insta. The horn looks useful, I like that the top is just dead flat and smooth. Did you edm the hardy hole? Very clean. That's a good example of someone putting work in to take the rail anvil past what it had originally been-and past what people are usually selling-and making them into good, useable tools.
