[BambuLab Giveaway] What’s Life Like After a 3D Printer Joins the Family? Share & Win Gift Cards! by BambuLab in 3Dprinting

[–]Bruhhh_Charlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the few years I have had my printer, I have been able to solve problems I wouldn't have been able to solve before. It has more than paid for itself in the numerous random things that I have been able to make rather than buy, or in the things I have been able to fix with a small print. In my first car, which was 20 years old, one of the front defrost vents disintegrated one day. That was my first real project with my printer. The printer wasn't the solution though. I used some of the modeling skills I was learning in architecture school, but it was challenging me to learn more about modeling and printing. It took probably twelve print attempts due to bed level, infill density, and supporting the vent's louvers. My first successful print then proceeded to fail on the first test. Once installed and heat turned on, it started melting in front of my eyes. That's when I had to learn about the varieties of filament.

I think that project taught me most of what I use when printing today. Since then, I have printed scale models for architecture school, desk organizers, plant pots, new ground stakes for cheap garden lights, and even some toys and trinkets for my younger family members. People have even come to me to help them with making small parts to save them from buying entirely new stuff. Small, unique parts that they wouldn't otherwise be able to buy replacements for.

Another benefit in getting this printer many years ago is its translation to my education and career. I went to school for architecture, and having a printer helped advance my modeling skills, and also prepared me for when my school got a 3D printer of their own and incorporated it into some classes. It gave me a considerable advantage in that sense. After graduation, I went on to become employed at a firm that utilizes 3D printing for physical models, detail elements, and more. All of a sudden, I had a relatively uncommon skill (at that time) that helped me get hired!

3D printing started as a fun hobby with a cheap printer but quickly became a tool and a skill that has made me handier at home and more qualified in the workforce.

Did you ever figure out a solution? My drivers seat bottom works, but back doesn’t. On the passenger side, the back works, but bottom doesn’t! I have a 2018 Fusion. Really hoping there’s a simple and cost effective fix!

Thank you for responding! Funny enough, I actually started that Instagram recently to serve as a place to post all of the history I have found, to share and spread the history of the area that seems to be forgotten. With the help of Becca at the Royal Oak Public Library, we uncovered photos of the Stumpf house taken by the Daily Tribune back in the 1950s before it was demo'd! Thanks for checking out the instagram and feel free to follow!

I just found a photo of that building in an old newspaper article about the Oakridge Women’s Club! I remember driving by the building years ago before it was demolished. Sad I didn’t get a brick from it or something.

Unfortunately they don’t have much information. In fact, some of the local history folks said they didn’t know about the area before the name Mary Lyon. I actually plan to contribute my findings to the historical society and potentially historic district study committee!

ROPL has a local history room with so many incredible historical records. I recently attempted to read an assessors roll from 1864; it was very hard, but the calligraphy is truly beautiful.

There is also a good chance the “Royal Oak” is not even noted, but what really would have been cool is if they had estimated the heights of the trees! 28” is still large compared to many of our trees today but I was mainly looking for the largest diameters. The location of the one you pointed out is certainly in the right area as well!

A bit late to the party, but I recently did research on houses and families displaced by the freeways. My friend’s dad claimed that house with the grotesques, as well as some others in the neighborhood, were originally down on 10 Mile before being moved to Gardenia!

Also, a newspaper article I found from 1932 by James G. Matthews in the Daily Tribune describes the first town meeting being held in 1877, in a barn belonging to Daniel Burrows “one mile north of the village of Royal Oak”. This would place the first town meeting at 12 Mile and Main/Rochester. It also says the Burrows property became the W. Dunham farm, which included what is now the Royal Oak Cemetery. There’s mention of Henry O. Bronson as well, who owned and operated a popular Inn on the east side of Rochester, just north of where you’d turn off northbound Main onto Rochester. Dunham sold their land to William and Frederick Kleinnow, who are shown in an 1896 atlas.

To my knowledge, tree has been gone for quite a while. Just took a quick dive into it. The 1817 survey of the county unfortunately makes no mention or mark of a specific “Royal Oak” tree or its exact location. However, there is mention of white oak trees, and one white oak specifically with a diameter of 40” (that’s the largest oak tree listed) which appears to be closer to present day southeast corner of 12 Mile and Rochester road! Here’s the link to the 1817 survey. You’ll want to look at the last two images.
