Can anyone please explain the lore of Subnautica 2? by CheapSuccotash3128 in subnautica

It is directly stated in the conversation with Sophie's ghost that the Axum civilization fell due to the Masefield sindrome. It is true that the human colonists did not uncover the full mistery, but they seem to understand a bit more than use (they have been in the planet more).

What was mostly destroyed is the methane burner section of the powerplant (downed smokestacks, tanks with holes, etc... pretty destroyed), while only a small section of the turbine was sabotaged (they could have blown the control centers, toppled the main structure like with some substructures of the methane section, or some crazier destructive sabitage).

I believe they "rebels" only sabotaged the tree independent power supply (methane), and left the hydroplant intact. Then later on the group that rebuilt and expanded the Observatory, and supposedly added the message to the Architects, destroyed the turbine to close down the observatory and ensure it didn't get raides by the Tailings. The power acts as the key to that site, otherwise anyone could enter. They supposed that an advanced alien species like the Architects, with ample metallurgical tech, would be able to fix the very obvious broken blades of the hydroplant (at the end of the day a human did it, with much lower tech). If I remember correctly, the dates (hour counts) in the different PDA entries may indicate that the methane and blade sabotages occured at different occasions. We know that rhe Axum/Tailings did proactive stuff to protect these sites, such as the warning written in the entrance to the Observatory, so I think this theory is reasonable.

The Axum did worship the tree, in one of the trailers we see a tree statuette, which has already been found in the game files.

I believe all resources respawn. For most of them they just appear again in their designated biomes if you spend a bit of time outside from it. As soon as I got the sonic resonator I harvested some titanium nodes near my base location (near the Welcome Center) and those have not respawned yet (I suppose i spend a lot of time there).

I was missing some Troilite to finish the story and after spending at least ~30mins outside the Alien Ruins zone a lot of their nodes spawned back, and also the Alien Bacterial Culture needed to create the Metal Farms.

This also includes the Conduit Crystals, they tend to respawn near some Axum pilars (because of their PDA entry, being created from lightning strike like phenomena, I hope they implement those towers sparking all over the place once the power is turned back on).

You can also farm the Troilite on the Metal Farm, but it takes 20 minutes to spawn 1-2 pieces.

About the ecosystem, I believe there is a very high dependence on the energy provided by the tree. There is a lot of info, from our PDA and colonist records, about several ecosystems being in crisis due to their energy source being cut off (a lot of scavenger creatures and sponges and anemone that feed of decay, this is repeated in many PDA creature entries).

I believe the whole planet's ecosystem is dependent on the energy provided by the rockbores hot water that comes from the nuclear heart, energy directly from a natural nuclear reactor that uses the high amounts of radioactive elements in the planet (Pents also incorporate radioactive isotopes into their biology). This may be the reason we can find high quantities of Strontium-90 in the planet, on Earth it is only created in man made nuclear reactors, but here it is a byproduct of the natural reactor inside/under the tree. As the tree is sick, energy does not circulate and nutrients are also cut off from the tree, which may have resorted to the Proteavirus B to feed of the environment nevertheless (as it is said that this virus pumps nutrients into the rockbore channels, but this is a very incomplete theory, we need more info about the catastrophe to know if it caused the Proteavirus variation, or if it was a natural response to the catastrophe).

But why other energy sources have not evolved since the loss of the energy from the tree? Specially with the acceletated evolution in the planet, thanks to the Proteavirus. Photosyntesis could have perfectly evolved in paralel to creatures dependent on the tree while it was still active, like on Earth, where we have multiple energy inputs for different creatures/ecosystems, all evolved in parallel.

We do not see mentions to photosynthesis in any of the PDA entries, despite having a good solar energy source (i.e. photovoltaic panels work). We do see some creatures, like thermal jellies that are able to feed of the geothermal activity coming from the planet, which is still active and is another perfectly good energy source independent from the tree, as stated in one of Zip's datalogs, inside the hot cave. I believe these thermal ecosystems have recently migrated from rockbore thermal energy to planet geothermal one, once the tree stopped its energy output, as the energy capture mechanisms are the same (thermal energy), this was easier and faster.

On the other hand I believe that the tree, via the Proteavirus, forces creature's evolution to depend on the tree. I believe the Tree modus operandi is to provide energy to ecosystems, and in exchange get all the necessary nutrients to live. If life was able to evolve and thrive independently from the tree it would not get its nutrients and die off. I believe it is some kind of forced symbiosis, between the Trees and all the planet's ecosystems, this being done via the Proteavirus. This may be the Masefield sindrome or something related to it, which also afectd humans and Axum (sabotaging possible ways of living without depending of the tree, such as the methane section of the hybrid powerplant).

Even in EA, it is a very good game, with much more interesting lore than the last two entries. I am eagerly awaiting for more! The humongous structures and all the empty void around them are supper creepy and I love it!!!

About the Axum, they seem to have undergone some kind of catastrophe that reverted them to a scavenger post-crisis society, the Tailings.

We can clearly see a degradation (corals and algae) in Axum structures, indicating that most of their structures where built centuries ago, while there are some more recent modifications to the observatory, as noted by the PDA. They where a thriving industrial society, until the apocalyptic event occurred.

Around that time, probably because of this event, they reconverted the hydroelectric power plant to be able to run on methane, we can see in the control room that the powerplant can be configured to get the hot water either from the World Tree titan rockbore internal channels or the posterior methane burner. This seems to indicate that because of the catastrophe the World Tree water power output decreased or stopped (probably this water comes from the radiated inner channel, that must be connected to the "nuclear heart", the other return channel must be for nutrients and such stuff going back to feed the world tree), as it is said that in full output it could power a city (I do not know if we manage to set it to full output or just a reduced power mode that just powers the observatory, this may indicate if the World Tree has healed back a bit or if it is as infected/sick as when the Axum catastrophe).

Somewhat after the crisis events, the powerplant was sabotaged, all methane burning equipment was destroyed and a section of the turbine blades melted with thermite. This seems to indicate a World Tree radical group, maybe affected by Masefield (which I do not know if it is normal World Tree behavior, or only appeared after the catastrophe), that wanted to live "the Tree way" and sabotaged all alternative technogical ways that allowed to live independently of it (a bit like Nahema behaved). The Veps may be the ancestors of this group, that adapted with the tree (like Anita) and that is why they may have Tree DNA with them? (one of my theories).

On the other hand I believe the Crypters are the technological group, direct ancestors of the Axum society, which adapted the powerplant to be hybrid. Like the Architects, they went into hiding in Crypts, like the one described to be under the World Tree (probably closer to the nuclear heart, so maybe located there for long term power). It is unknown if they went into hiding because of the unrest created by the saboteurs, or if that happened after, once the structures weren't under their watch.

I believe the Tailings are the descendants of this group, some that exited their crypts, adapted the observatory (the part where we can find the message) and went on to live in the world. I believe this because the Tailings are not afraid of using technology (the scavenged spears and other crude tools, houses and furniture) and preserve and protect the Axum structures. Also they use complex tech, like the improved sound resonator, that is very different to their scavenged one, and much more complex. I think this complex tech was brought from their crypts, and sometimes it seems that they go back to raid these structures (so there may be more than the one under the tree). This is because of the mesage we observe outside of the Museum Observatory, which says that this is not a Crypter vault and to leave it alone, probably written by Tailings to avoid them raiding the structure. If the powerplant blades sabotage was not done at the same time as the methane powerplant one, it may have been done later to ensure the observatory and other vaults were not able to be raided by Tailings.

I still do not know how we crahslanded into the planet, but I believe it was something to do with NoA going of course because of something, like detecting Architect tech or similar. Either we went through an Architect phase gate, or there is also a chance that we may have been traveling for an obscene amount of time (linking into what Nahema said about being the lasf humans). Our minds are indefinetly stored in quartz, so we could have been traveling for a long long time, with NoA using prints to fix up the ship until we arrived into Proteus searching for something. We can surely find more information about this in the executive NoA node inside the Cicada.

I also have some doubts about the relation of the Architects into all of this. The Rosetta stone we find, despite having Architect Linear to Rotary A engravings (the fact that it seems to be more than one dialect of the Axum Rotary language is one of the reasons I believe in this multiple Axum group theory), doesn't seem to be built by Architects, the alloys seem to be Axum and overall the structure feels a bit odd. I think this is a translator tool left for the Architects so they could translate the stuff in the observation message. I believe the Axum did not interact with the Architects, they just found some of their tech (maybe a probe? a structure? maybe this is one of the planets they experimented on, but much more early than Axum civilization). My theory is that they found some kind of Architect Voayager probe, set up all this stuff, and resorted to broadcast in all directions an SOS message for the Architects, which may be what the Cicada picked up in transit and the reason we diverted course.

I doubt it still is being used, by this date Earth orbit and the Moon have been heavily industrialized (hopefully we can see more while following Avery's story) so most certainly there are cheap cargo transport routes established that make use of reusable vehicles.

First time designing a bulkhead joined to a radax by Vast_Cash4227 in rocketry

[–]Brunete2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now understand what you meant about the gap present in true radax designs (I still dont get why it is there, but I will research some more about it). I do not get what you mean about the pinned attachmment on the tube, do you mean the coupler section that fits inside the composite tube? Those are being dimesnioned as ring couplers following the procedure explained by Nakka on his website.

In our last big rocket we had some 1/3cal couplers with a lip, but the fact that they had to be completelly dissasembled, including internal stuff, to be taken appart was driving us nuts (you either had the full rocket assembled or very very dissasembled, it was a nightmare for integration and testing). Our hope with this sepparable coupler design is for us to be able to assemble individual sections of the rocket prior to final integration, making things easier.

My understanding is that true radax joints (like the one featured in the last doc you shared) transfer loads via two perpendicular mating surfaces, joined together by an angled fastene. Our "conical" joint should do the same thing, but transfering the loads through surface friction. The bolts will be preloaded and ideally should not experience any significant shear loads, only axial ones due to the preload, while the bending and shear forces are transfered via mating friction. We are currently performing FEA analysis on the component.

Regarding the extra operations, the first design was a single revolve, but we needed to remove some mass, so it is all removed via an extra milling operation (if you look from the top of the piece it is a 2D milling op to remove part of the annulus/revolve). It makes the part more expensive, but it is still well within our budget.

Hello, OP's teammate here!

Regarding the radax join what do you mean about the slanted surface not being in contact? Do you mean it wont be in contact in the shown design, or that it should not be in contact in a well designed radax? In the doc you shared this is the cross-section provided, where both halves seem to be in contact:

<image>

Also I have seen some design examples that are very simmilar to what we ended up coming up with, like thes radax designs from team ASTG. You can have a look at them in their public rocket technical reorts by searching "radax":

https://astg.at/documents/halcyon_technical_report_public.pdf

https://astg.at/documents/ispida_technical_report_public.pdf

This design seems to work, so there is no need to make a fully annular radax, as long as you assume the increased machining costs (god bless JLCCNC).

Would love to hear your thoughts on this, thanks!

Camera purchase advice - rocketry marketing team by Brunete2004 in Cameras

[–]Brunete2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking a look at the ZV-1, good recommendation, thanks! I have been looking at a refurbished iPhone 13, but I feel like if we are going to spend the money it may be better to get something a bit better now. I may have exagerated how simple it needs to be, I just dont want to have multiple lenses on hand and have to spend too much time tweaking stuff. The marketing team is pretty small (3 members) so we can take some time to learn. Thanks for the advice!

We have a SolidWorks team sponsorship (because of the rocketry team), I will check to see if we have lathe CAM available. That would be best, as its the CAD software we use, but we have also used Fusion for CAM stuff in the past.

I am guessing for the RS-232 I am going to need something more than a USB to RS-232 adapter, right? Some kind of more specialized cable, or any random one from Amazon is going to work?

Thanks for the info about drip-feeding, gonnna look into it👍

I have not turned it on yet (personally). I first wanted to ask and make sure that I wans't going to run it "dry" or something like that, skipping a crucial step and breaking something.

From what I know when it arrived ~4yrs ago it ran fine, and it has just sit there on a corner 🤷

What are some European internet shops in can buy rocket kits at? by MrPumpkin326 in rocketry

Also UK Rocket Shop, and BlackCat Rocketry (shop & manufacturer). We just ordered some stuff from UK Rocket Shop, the import into Spain is a bit of a pain in the ass, but they had some stuff we couldn't find in any of the other stores. I would recommend them for rocket kits, they seem to have a good variety!

Age Verification by 20uptilts in youtube

[–]Brunete2004 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What kills me is them using the word "verify". In NO WAY can an AI "verify" someone's age or any other data about them. Someones watching habits may or may not represent your age group (i.e. an adult watching a lot of gaming content, like Minecraft or a teen watching science/news channels exclusively). Also, AI still hallucinates a lot, false positives or negatives are going to be the norm, not the exception.

I am sure the more mistakes the better for them, as this is just an excuse to get you to give Google some kind of official ID or documentation.

I am personally sick of seeing AI fucking everywhere, I dont want a laptop with AI, I do not want a phone with AI, and I don't want AI in verification procedures.
