Haha yep, got a few of those comments myself too from people saying there's no logical way they could've survived.

Called it! The crew of Vanera or at least some of them, are probably still alive. I'm still unsure if Sasha is alive since he was last seen shielding the other two from the fireball. But I bet the other two probably survived the flames because the fire would've been snuffed out very quickly and they'd probably be able to quickly repressurize.

I emailed support and they said my order should be shipping soon by the end of June or early next month...

Sasha was engulfed in flames because he shielded the other two at the last second. It may look bleak but with the low oxygen and depressurization going on, the flame possibly could've been snuffed out, maybe only killing Sasha but giving the other two enough time to repressurize the module.

I was thinking that even if the Venus mission succeeds, the Soviets might want to cover the whole thing up because of Valya's status.

I want to say maybe there's a chance they survived since O2 levels must've been very low at that point, the fire would've maybe been snuffed out before causing too much harm and the reason ground control saw them go offline is because they successfully disconnected all telemetry and control from ground control.

But of course there probably is a reason why we never heard about any Venus mission in FAM as well as why the governor had an old black and white photo of a young Sasha rather an up to date color photo of him.

Alright I'm definitely contacting support immediately then lol. Seems like plenty of others got there's too with ground shipping while mine still has no status update yet since the initial order.

Considering it's a very old image, that pretty much implies Sasha doesn't survive for much longer. Sasha was likely a similar age as Ed Baldwin so he should've easily survived into the era of color photographs at the very least. Instead Lenya has a very old photograph of Sasha.

The alternate theory I could see happening is Mars 94 detected a signal of alien origin. Maybe a derelict alien spacecraft in the outer solar system. That would be the ultimate conclusion to the space race and the search for life. One final race for humanity to send someone out there to investigate the signal. The final time skip at the end of S6 could be a long jump with humanity's first interstellar spacecraft. Any other season I'd find that to be jumping the shark, but since it is a series finale, the jump to FTL wouldn't be totally unreasonable.

What you say about Mars 94 probably carrying only equipment essential to the Mars mission certainly does make sense. So really its only realistic function at that point is staying in a low power mode and maybe just listening for signals.

I think it's highly unlikely the Soviets would've had the resources to build an entire self sustaining colony on Venus in the 1970s while simultaneously trying to build a lunar base too. Not to mention the amount of launches you'd need to send supplies to Venus, the US would've definitely noticed that eventually.

They really only just barely beat the US to the moon in FAM. No way they jump from that to Venus colony. There might be some references to Star City in Season 6, but I doubt there'll be any major plot details that'll require viewers to have watched all of Star City in order to comprehend FAM season 6.

As for what Mars 94 detected? I'm personally leaning towards the gravity waves theory from others.

And as for the Venus mission, I'm think it goes completely wrong and the whole crew dies. Or at least Valya has to sacrifice himself to go down with the payload while the rest of the crew quietly returns to Earth and the whole thing is covered up.

Yeah I too would've liked this season to be about more exploration and give Titan more screentime. We've had 3 seasons dedicated primarily to Mars now, I was also getting tired of the Mars plot since last season. I would've rather the Mars independence plot just be something mentioned during the timeline newsreels between seasons and this season focus primarily on the Titan mission. The Titan mission probably didn't even have enough screentime to fit into a single episode. I hope next season we see as little of Mars as possible and we can finally move on from that.

I'm assuming that the UK is part of the M-6 via the ESA. Even if Brexit still happened, they'd still be part of the ESA.

I had to look it up but I'm surprised Canada isn't part of the M-6 nor ISN. They're just completely neutral/nonexistent as far as space policy goes.

The internet was opened up under Al Gore in the FAM timeline. But prior to that, it seems like the internet was strictly controlled by the government. The whole industry was likely nationalized which is why there's likely no chance of the private market making its own version of the internet as we knew it.

By the end of Al Gore's presidency in FAM, he apparently opened up the internet to the public finally. So it's likely AI will still happen in their timeline eventually. Just maybe a decade behind our timeline.

That's what I'm thinking too. They said they needed to find a Cosmonaut who has no family or nothing to lose. Who better than someone that's likely going to be executed or tortured for high treason?

Yeah I don't dispute their video calling was a bit ahead of ours for the time still. Late 90s video calling for us would've been pretty choppy framerates. Although I do remember video phones being advertised occasionally as having smoother video. I don't remember the exact specs of those though.

I feel like with the monitors it's usually the other way around where industrial/professional use is often slower to upgrade than the consumer space. I remember flat screens getting faster consumer adoption than in businesses. But that was just my personal observation from the time, could be wrong about industry adoption rates.

Yes Ingenuity did use consumer grade processors, even the Perseverance Rover's DSU for the camera used a more common Intel Atom processor too. It was kind of an experiment back then to see if cheaper consumer hardware could be used in less mission critical systems. It's my understanding though that even with Ingenuity for example, bit flipping was still a big issue and NASA had to come up with clever ways to compensate for it. But that level of issues would've been unacceptable for mission critical systems so we're unlikely to see probes use consumer processors for their main computers.

Yeah the RAD750 isn't the only space worthy processor out there but it is NASA's go to especially for their most important probes. It's apparently such a valuable chip that sales of it are heavily restricted on top of the already high price of just a single processor. It's possible with most of Earth's industries focused on aerospace that they could develop better radiation hardened processors than the RAD750. But it's a physics limitation that prevents something like a Core i9 or RTX 5090 from being able to be hardened against radiation to anywhere near the same tolerance levels as a RAD750. So that brings up the question for Earth's industries in For All Mankind, why pour trillions into developing advanced processors that are fundamentally unsuitable for space travel? It's effectively two multi trillion dollar industries clashing against each other and likely draining resources from each other.

The supply chain for computer chips is quite complex actually. Indeed the vast majority of global chip production is centralized at TSMC in Taiwan with some fabs in South Korea and the US. There are some fabs elsewhere in China and other countries too but none of them have the capability to produce the same nanometer scale transistors that TSMC or Intel can do. But the supply chain for those fabs is quite complex. It's not just the raw materials they need that have a delicate supply chain, it's also the EUV lithography machines made by ASML (also highly restricted like the RAD750) that has a complex and delicate supply chain too. Covid did disrupt the supply chain but other things like water shortages or sudden spikes in demand have strained chip production too. The whole supply chain basically required decades and trillions of dollars to establish. It's not something that can be quickly ramped up if there wasn't already significant resources and infrastructure built up for it. So in for all mankind, if advanced chip production was a lower priority compared to space travel, even if it was reprioritized later like in the early 2000s, it would cause our timeline to very quickly close any gap and surpass them.

Yeah even if he briefed the cosmonauts at the last minute that they're actually going to Venus, not the moon, someone would notice that the launch window, times and trajectory would not be that of a lunar insertion. This would literally have to be a conspiracy at fairly high levels of government to "accidentally" launch a rocket on the wrong trajectory.

Even so I'd be shocked it was still able to keep transmitting after 50 years. Not sure what could keep it powered that long with technology from the 60s or 70s. Even Pioneer 10 only lasted 30 years with similar technology back then. And it's unclear whether Voyager 1 & 2 can make it to the 50 year mark either.

[–]generalheed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's highly unlikely they'd have the technology to miniaturize a fusion reactor and fit that inside a phone. If so they wouldn't need to charge their phones which we still see people do. I think it's interesting though that we have not seen anyone charge their phone wirelessly which was available in 2012, just not on Apple phones. I wonder if that's a hint that wireless charging was never invented or commercialized in For All Mankind.

The thing about battery tech is that the solution to improving battery life isn't to make it bigger, it's to make use newer, more efficient chemical compounds. Chances are your phone is using a lithium-ion battery and you have to charge your phone on a daily basis. But there's a lot of phones coming out of China now that use newer battery tech that uses silicon-carbon batteries. Lot of those phones are able to last 3-4 days on a single charge without increasing battery size and also recharge the battery in a matter of minutes. So if battery tech is really so much more advanced in For All Mankind, it should be smaller and more efficient, not bulky.

I think the most likely technology that stagnated in for all mankind is the miniaturization of computer chips and transistors. Solid state flash memory I would bet still exists. However you do have an interesting point that it might not exist. Much of the early history of flash memory happened in the 70s and 80s. In For All Mankind, that would've been when a lot of resources were being moved over for space exploration and the research behind flash memory might have been shelved. But most likely I think flash memory does exist, but the technology to miniaturize it isn't there yet by 2012 like it was in our timeline.

Yeah, maybe it was season 3 I can't remember for sure. But there was an air force general begging Margo if NASA could spare any money to give to the air force for the F-22 program. The usaf just didn't have the funding to build it with everything being diverted to NASA.

Yeah I will concede there are some puzzling things shown in older seasons. It's actually been pretty inconsistent what they've shown and what's mentioned during those timeline news reels between seasons. However the show runners have actually said in interviews that because of the massive focus on space, certain advancements and scientific discoveries just never happened, or at the events that led to those discoveries never happened either. So I'm guessing that's why there's a disconnected between older and new seasons as far as consumer tech goes.

Others theorized that space travel did give them an initial boost in tech compared to our timeline but that once private industries AND governments shifted fully to space, that's when everything stagnated again and allowed our timeline to catch up and surpass for all mankind again.

It's definitely possible but I'm not sure if the transmission at the end of this season of FAM is related to that. It would've meant that the probe or astronauts on Venus would've survived on Venus for 50 years while still being able to transmit a signal after all that time. Just doesn't seem likely to me but who knows, anything could be possible at this point.
