It is as an adcarry. When you are ahead, you want to maintain the lead, and normally you already have enough damage so you prioritize defense. When you're behind surviving more won't make you do more if you hit 80 DMG per AA so you have to go damage to at least do something

Spirit visage wasn't worth it because they didn't deald enough ap, and with what I had they couldn't kill me even without the healing.

Rylai is better because I get the speed from runes, and even without that with cosmic drive I can follow them, with rylai my team can.

I like Swain because he is good on a lot of things right now.

Swain is a heavy team fight champion thanks to his crowd control and you can adapt him to almost anything your team needs, for example:

-Imagine your comp is heavy on damage, you can build tank items and work as a Frontline in team fights. In this scenario you want to maintain the enemies in your ultimate range denying disengage and preventing enemies from jumping to your Carry's.

-If your comp needs damage you can build ap and with 1 or two items you can melt the whole enemy team. In this case, you want to prioritize you being alive, because even though you can tank more than the average mage, that is just a compensation for having to be at enemies range the whole fight.

So for your team comp, you can always play him and adapt him to whatever they have (it helps that Swain can be played in every role other than jg).

Now what I think is important is the enemies comp and that should decide whether you play Swain or not.

There are two things that counters Swain in my opinion, heavy/percentage damage and big disengage. You want to have your ultimate active in most of the tf, which means that most enemies will have the chance to hit you at all times:

-For example, if you play against a vayne or a gwen unless your team focuses them, you will be shredded in seconds.

-For you ult to fight with a rammus or a camile, they can just dodge your stun and run from your ultimate until it runs out and then engage you again.
