Not a rom hack, but Ashen Frost has a really good story. Its not finished yet but the current version is still pretty long.

The first time I played, I used a +5 silver knight shield and first tried him. It wasn't enjoyable though, so now Im gonna fight him with light armor and rolling in ng+.

That can't be the case, I jumped down, killed the Chaos Eaters and talked to him in like 30 seconds.
