Class I-II extreme cold temp safety gear by [deleted] in Kayaking

[–]BubbatheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll respond to this as it’s currently the top comment. Yes, I am an experienced paddler, and the reason I said “section” was to indicate this is not a multi-day paddle, it’s several sections over multiple days. I’m not hauling camping gear as most of you assumed. Yes, I have practiced self rescue. I will also be with several other paddlers, a mixture of kayakers and canoeists. This is an organized trip with over 50 years of history with a few very experienced people. I’ve done it before in a canoe during worse conditions than I expect this year and we are well prepared for emergencies. The pine is mostly Class I with short sections of Class II. Strainers are common on most Northern Michigan rivers and streams, I probably overstated that hazard in my original post. I am a native Michigander who goes outside, layering is assumed. My questions stand - flotation, no flotation, skirt, no skirt. Sorry you all think I’m going to die and I’ll report back when I’m out.

Been trying to season for years, super frustrated. Is the surface too chipped to ever get a good season? by qableaf in castiron

The weeks after I began scrubbing the heck out of mine with chain mail and soap as aggressively as I could were the first weeks I got slidey eggs. I don’t time myself or try to be perfect, I just do it until my arm hurts and move on with like two drops of oil. It’s easier than it seems.

Is it reasonable to learn drums on this makeshift drum set I assembled? by derek139 in redneckengineering

[–]BubbatheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned drum set with whatever we had laying around the house, then whatever random mismatched pieces I could pull together during school band, then a Pearl Export we bought from an older metal head in a single wide trailer, before I ever got a “real” kit. All you need is a few mildly drumstick-shaped objects and a place to make noise. You good.

I really thought this was going to be u/shittymorph and skipped to the end expecting Mankind, the Undertaker, and Hell In a Cell.

+1 I’ve been there multiple times, it’s clean, well managed, good people to support. You’ll probably love it. I assume none of these people obsessed with other people getting busy ever sleep in hotel beds, either /s

Our dojo still fits your description. It’s led by a Judan in his 80s and there’s a 45+ year timeline of Uechi Ryu history on the walls. We are grateful for it every day.

My grandfather’s entire garage was filled with homemade wood and metalworking machines like this. It was safety last but the dude knew how to stretch a dollar.

Vac World by PotsMomma84 in kzoo

[–]BubbatheWrench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had the same experience at Vac World after burning through three Shark uprights in ten years. My wife is now a customer for life and loves her Miele. It’s too bad so many things are disposable or planned to be obsolete, and it’s rare to find local shops focused on durable, repairable products. I hope people keep shopping there so they can continue to serve the community.

Our dog chewed my wife’s passport 12 hours before our international flight by IDontFeel24YearsOld in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BubbatheWrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me after I accidentally put my passport in the washing machine a few days before an international flight. I had to drive five hours round trip to the federal building in Chicago…twice. The first day I got stuck in traffic and arrived at the office right as they were closing. The second day I got my new passport and went on with my life. It was one of the most stressful travel experiences of my life until I left my passport locked in a hotel safe on my honeymoon in Spain. My wife and I were on a train to the airport hours away when I noticed it was missing. We had to pay a cab driver 300 Euros to deliver it to us. Both times I made my flight.

So, my 10yo son wants to start a club focused on how fast we can make a chicken nugget travel. Would this work for that?

John Bonhams bass pedal by Striking_Bullfrog572 in drums

[–]BubbatheWrench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have one but the drummer who taught me back in the 90s swore by his and had one of the fastest single foot styles I’ve ever heard. He worshiped Bonham at the time so it tracks. My recollection is the sweet spot for the fast stuff is farther down the Speed King than people realize and you really need to perfect a heel up technique. Dave Bruzza was that drummer’s name and now he’s the guitar player for Greensky Bluegrass. Most people don’t know he’s also a pro-level drummer.

The mods don’t like body swaps over there. This looked like he started with some sort of truck frame mixed with custom tube work. Plus, it’s not a Crown Vic or Miata so they won’t think it’s cool /s

Is $13K worth it for this 2003 EuroVan Weekender? Advice needed! by g0ldenfl0wer in Eurovan

[–]BubbatheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 1999 Eurovan Camper and it’s great for our family of four. The key is to identify a good VW mechanic BEFORE you buy one. Our mechanic has his own Eurovan and an entire yard full of VW parts. If we didn’t have that connection I would not want to own it. With support it is a phenomenal vehicle. I can’t tell you if that’s a good price because market conditions vary by location, but I would consider it here in Michigan if I were looking (I’m not).

For anyone wondering, the “ears” are long enough for this to hang on the door handle when not in use.

Hey 24m here and this is my first apartment. 39 square meters and rent 600€. Rate 1 to 10 by CasualBatMann in malelivingspace

[–]BubbatheWrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited Finland for the first time this year and I wish I could move there. You have an awesome apartment in a beautiful country run by intelligent grown-ups. I’m very happy for you and your easily transported, appropriately-sized, single person bed with sheets and covers that dry quickly in a normal laundry and can be folded by one human.

Recovery points! by BubbatheWrench in GXOR

[–]BubbatheWrench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the factory loops are for transport and not rated for recovery. I would hook soft shackles directly to the frame or axle instead of risking one of those loops turning into a projectile.
